New support for STEM in Cincinnati region

COLUMBUS, Ohio (March 6, 2014)At the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) Hughes High School today, officials from Battelle announced a new grant totaling $25,000 for training for teachers. The new funding for STEM in Ohios Southwest region brings the total contributions to local STEM education from Battelle or Battelle-managed projects to more than $1.9 million. The money will allow the Southwest Ohio hub of the Ohio STEM Learning Network to host new training for educators and STEM learning experiences for local students. The hub is staffed by the University of Cincinnati and anchored by Hughes STEM High School. STEM education opens new doors for students, said Aimee Kennedy, Vice-President of Education, Philanthropy and STEM Learning at Battelle. Thats why were so proud to see how the Southwest Ohio hub has grown to provide real value to schools in this community. During the last eight years, this funding has made it possible for the Southwest Ohio hub to train hundreds of teachers, improving the learning experience for thousands of students. In addition to hosting trainings for teachers and STEM experiences for students, the hub also has helped build support in the region for STEM education to attract support from other key organizations. With the support of Battelle, weve been able to build a program tha t is moving STEM in Southwest Ohio forward while creating the connections that will allow us to sustain this work for years to come, said Kathy Wright, principal of Hughes STEM High School. One key partner in Southwest Ohio has been the University of Cincinnati. The University and the School of Education are vitally interested in the promise and success of Hughes. This gift will allow us to deepen the partnership we have and meet the needs of Hughes
