2013 MOD B Trial response:

Question: Orators are successful in conveying their intended message through their ability to capture and manipulate the essence of the time in which they are speaking Orators are successful in conveying their intended message through their ability to capture and manipulate the essence of the time in which they are speaking. This concept can be demonstrated explicitly in both Paul Keatings national address Funeral service of the unknown Australian Soldier and Faith Bandlers motivational delivery Faith, Hope and Reconciliation. Both speeches aim to deliver their messages about justice, identity and unity. In effectively demonstrating their contemporary relevance and attending to the response of their audience both speakers were able to successfully convey their intended message. Delivered on a national occasion on Armistice Day 1993, Keating aimed to express his concerns for the Australian identity as well as the importance of unity in the country. He has successfully achieved this purpose by incorporating a range of literary and delivery techniques (rhetorical devices) such as repetition and dramatic pauses to link the past, present and the future. At the beginning of his speech, he commented in regards to the Unknown Soldier He is one of the 45000one of the 416000 Australiansone of the 100000 Australians who died in war this century and finally the metonymy (marked as incorrect) He is all of them. He is one of us. The use of repetition He is one of alongside with the growing figures emphasise on Australians connection to global issues. Although referring to the past, Keating has also subtly alluded to Australias growing global significance in the early 1990s as a result of improved transport technologies and opened economic policies. Hence in allowing the content of his delivery relate to contemporary issues, Keating was able to effectively deliver his intended message of Australian identity in the global context. (This needs to be developed further). As well as this, Keating has also catered for the response of his audience at the time and occasion to successfully deliver his message of unity. Towards the end of his delivery he stated The unknown soldier interred was not to glorify war over peace, assert a soldiers character above a civilians, one race, religion over another The effective juxtaposition of antithetical opposites war/peace, soldier/civilian here helped to emphasise that the national Australian identity incorporates all men, women, children of different backgrounds and stresses on the sense of equality. As a result this allows Keating to address all Australian citizens in the important national occasion at the time. Therefore through his effective arrangement of key words and phrases, Keating was able to effectively convey his message with regards to unity at the time of his occasion. Furthermore, Keatings speech was comprised with relatively short paragraphs with a clear, succinct structure. As a short 3 5 minute delivery, Keating was able to capture the attention span of his audience, reinforcing all the key ideas and concepts in his speech. (Try to focus upon sophisticated rhetorical devices) Faith Bandler on the other hand was able to achieve the same effect also through the contemporary relevance of her speech. Throughout her delivery she has included extensive reference to social happenings, these include The terrible utterancestodayunder the name of free speech as well

as the talk back jockeys lined up against then. The reference of contemporary indigenous right debates allowed Bandler to reinforce her urgency for active Indigenous Rights activism. Thus in capturing the essence of the impact of timely issues in her delivery, Bandler was able to successfully deliver her message to her intended audience. Similar to Keating, Bandler has also made extensive referencing to the past to support the present and pressing future. In the middle of her delivery, Bandler has included consecutive examples of past successful indigenous land right movements and key figures involved. These include Alec Vesper, Jean Jimmy and the land right movements of Apeio and so on. In referring to the successful past, Bandler was able to strengthen the present thus encouraging her audience to work for the future to the betterment of indigenous people. As a result, by manipulating the essence of time in the link between past, present and future, Bandler was able to provide credibility for herself helping her to effectively convey her message of the importance of active Indigenous land right movements. Finally, through the effective use of metaphors that correspond with timely events, Bandler was also able to convey her message about co-operation. This is evident as follows climbed ramparts of the rugged past and looked down at the ugliness below as well as They are chained in their stubbornness but we are free. If we must move on without them, then we must. These metaphors provide a visual connection of her audience to contemporary struggles of achieving indigenous rights such as conservative politics, the media and so on. In doing so, Bandler was once again able to effectively express the contemporary relevance of her delivery to her audience allowing her to successfully deliver her message of co-operation. In conclusion, both Keating and Bandler were able to effectively convey their messages of national identity, unity, justice and co-operation through expressing the contemporary relevance of their message and appropriate use of language and structure in the time and occasion of delivery. In doing so, both speeches have manipulated the essence of time to convey their messages successfully. Feedback: You have done well to discuss how the composers used their respective contexts to convey a message. However, more emphasis on the idea of manipulation might have enabled more comprehensive answer to the question
