Evaluation Question 2 How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Target Population
My target population is mainly females aged 16-25. This is my target audience as I feel like most indie/alternative magazines are aimed at a mainly male target audience in many different ways such as a female cover star who is dressed/shot in a way that would appeal more to men. I felt as though there was a gap in the market, so I wanted to create a product that would appeal to this audience that has been overlooked. I also wanted to be careful to not make it too girly as this would be a bad decision; I wanted my magazine to be mainly aimed at females, but not to the point where the male audience would be lost completely.

Representation Gender: My media product was mainly aimed at females. I used a female cover
star which is likely to appeal to males, but styled her in a more conservative, natural looking way to appeal to females also. I also used a gender neutral colour scheme/house style of mainly orange, red, white and grey. The artists I featured in my product were mainly aimed at a female audience such as Marina and the Diamonds and Lana Del Rey, but I think my Double Page Spread artist would appeal more to a male audience as he is a male DJ.

Age: My media product is aimed mainly at people aged 16-25. This is the
audience that I thought would be most likely to purchase a magazine of this genre. This is also the target audience that I surveyed in my target audience research so I used these findings to create my product in a way that caters to the interests of this audience. I did this by using fonts and images that looked more youthful and fun and would grab the readers attention.

Genre of music: My media product is obviously aimed at people who enjoy the
indie/alternative genre of music. This is represented by the artists and articles that are featured, and also the fonts and images used automatically make the reader think of this genre, as opposed to the metal genre which uses more distorted/eroded fonts and grimy/serious looking images.

Religion: My media product does not represent any particular religion as I felt as
though this would make the product more exclusive/rejecting of other religions and would make some people less likely to buy it. I felt it would make the product less credible and less welcoming to a larger target population.

Ethnicity: Again, my media product does not represent any particular ethnicity
as again, I did not want to exclude anyone from the target audience.

Sexuality: Again, my media product does not represent a particular sexuality. I

did this because I wanted everyone in my target audience to be able to enjoy reading my magazine without feeling left out or discriminated against. I wanted a wide range of people to purchase my magazine, and re-purchase it on a regular basis as they feel included within by the way the magazine is produced and how it represents people.

Class: My media product is more aimed at a working/middle class audience. This

is because of the way the product was designed and created. The house style, fonts, colours and images used create a fun, youthful vibe that is less likely to appeal to a more mature/sophisticated audience. I created my product in this way because this is the audience I wanted to target and grab the attention of.
