and s o I had s t a r t e d t o c h a t a b o u t UFO's a t l u n c h t i m e w i t h Voloda
Gubarjob, t h e c h i e f of t h e S c i e n c e Depertment of 'Komsomolska Pravda.'
J u s t a f t e r lunch I taperecorded t h e following interview w i t h engineer
V. Gubarjov, a known - . s k e p t i c newspaperman, who h2s a number of good
contacts not only with astronomers, p h y s i c i s t s , m i s s i l e s p e c i a l i s t s ,
b u t a l s o w i t h t h e S t a t e S e c u r i t y and t h e Ermy a s w e l l .
Q: Can you t e l l - m e , whether you've s e e n ' a n y UFO's o v e r s o v i e t
territory?
A: 1 have been i n t e r e s t e d i n f l y i n g s a u c e r s s i n c e I was e i g h t
y e a r s o l d . The' f i r s t t i m e I heard of a f l y i n g s a u c e r was s e v e ~ , s l
y e a r s ago. I n a m e t e o r o l o g i c a l s t z t i o n n e a r t h e c i t y of T i k s i one
of t h e m e t e o r o l o g i s t s went o u t e a r l y one eveninp t o x h e c k his,ins.t,ru-
ments. While d o i n g s o he a l s o t o o k s e v e r a l photographs. Then, when
he p r o c e s s e d t h e f i l m h e n o t i c e d a n odd shaped o b j e c t which resembled
a c y l i n d e r on one of h i s photographs. , T h e r e f o r e he s e n t t h i s photo .
t o Moscow and a l s o a copy t o o u r d z i l y . I n a b o u t two weeks we pub-
l i s h e d z n a r t i c l e about t h i s unknown o b j e c t , And t h e n w3 r e c e i v e d a
f l o o d of s u c h ' f l y i n g s a u c e r 1 p i c t u r e s . F i n a l l y , we s t a r t e d t o pro-
duce them o u r s e l v e s , above Kreml, j u s t above t h e hcuse where t h e f o r -
mer c h i e f edHtor of I z v e s t i e M r . Adjubej used t o Live, on Przvda s t m e + -
T h i s was r e a l l y n o t h i n g more t h a n a t y p i c a l l i g h t r e f r a c t i o n i n t h e
camerat s o b j e c t i v e .
Sometime i n t h e y e a r s 1964 o r 1965 t h e r e was a news s t o r y t h a t
somewhere i n t h e U r a l Mountains t h e r e wzs a g r o u p of some s i x o r seve!
t o u r i s t s who d i d n ' t have a n y wounds and who a p p a r e n t l y h ~ d i e d be-
cause of a h e a r t a t t a c k j u s t hzve e x p r e s s i o n s of amazement and sur-
p r i s e on t h e i r f a c e s . $here were some rumors t h a t t h c s e people had
d i e d a f t e r s e e i n g a UFO. I phoned t h e m i l i t a r y Department of Regis-
t r a t i o n of Sudden De?ths, b u t t h e y d i d n ' t know a n y t h i n g of t h 2 t s o r t .
I n t h e l a s t t w e n t y y e a r s , t h e y s a i d t h a t n o t h i n g l i k e t h a t had e v e r
happened. N e v e r t h e l e s s , I d i d n ' t b e l i e v e them. I investigated a
number of o t h e r p l a c e s , b u t everywhere t h e y a s s e r t e d t h e r e p o r t of
t h e S e c u r i t y Depgrtment. ,
