Overview
The Hitachi NAS Platform plug-in enables the discovery and monitoring of Hitachi NAS Platform (NAS Platform) storage subsystems and components through IT Operations Analyzer. IT Operations Analyzer provides a unified, web-based interface that can display a number of status fields for nodes and components.

System requirements
The following sections identify the system requirements for the IT Operations Analyzer management server and the NAS Platform storage subsystem.

Management server requirements

The management server is the machine on which IT Operations Analyzer is installed. To support the installation of the Hitachi NAS Platform plug-in and the subsequent monitoring of NAS Platform storage subsystems, the management server must be running IT Operations Analyzer version 3.0 or later. For information about the management servers operating system, disk space, memory, and processor speed requirements, refer to Table 2-1 of the Hitachi IT Operations Analyzer Getting Started Guide.

NAS Platform storage subsystem requirements

Following are the requirements to discover and monitor NAS Platform storage subsystems using IT Operations Analyzer: The NAS Platform firmware version 7.0, 8.0, 8.1, or 10.0 must be running. NAS Platform supports the following storage subsystems: NAS Platform 3080 NAS Platform 3090 NAS Platform 3200 NAS Platform 3100

SNMP must be enabled in the NAS Platform storage subsystem. For information, see Preparing SNMP for the NAS Platform storage subsystem.

NAS Platform storage subsystem monitoring options

You have the following two options to monitor the NAS Platform storage subsystems: Basic Monitoring Advanced Monitoring

The following sections explain the configuration requirements for Basic and Advanced monitoring.

Configuration requirements for Basic Monitoring

To discover the NAS Platform storage subsystem in IT Operations Analyzer, you must obtain the IP address of the Administrative Enterprise Virtual Server (EVS) of the NAS Platform storage subsystem. The IP address must be on a public network where IT Operations Analyzer can access all the management information through the administrative EVS of the NAS Platform storage subsystem. Figure 1-1 illustrates the NAS Platform storage subsystem management with IT Operations Analyzer.

Components in Basic Monitoring

Table 1-1 and Table 1-2 list the Basic Monitoring components available in the Components tab and Drive Capacity tab.

Configuration requirements for Advanced Monitoring

Advanced monitoring supports additional performance metrics. To perform advanced monitoring, you must enable the SSH and create an IT Operations Analyzer user account to log on to the NAS Platform External SMU or Single node 3080/3090. For information, see Preparing SSH for the NAS Platform Storage Subsystem.

Configuration requirement for NAS Platform3080/3090 single node

To discover the NAS Platform storage subsystem in IT Operations Analyzer, you must obtain the IP address of the administrative virtual server entities (EVS) of the NAS Platform storage subsystem. The IP address must be on a public network where IT Operations Analyzer can access all the management information through the administrative EVS of the NAS Platform storage subsystem. See Figure 1-1 for an explanation of the NAS Platform storage subsystem management with IT Operations Analyzer.

Preparing SNMP for the NAS Platform storage subsystem

IT Operations Analyzer can discover and monitor the NAS Platform storage subsystems in your environment provided that SNMP access is configured. Also, administrative EVS should have access privileges to all the management information. Please refer to the Hitachi NAS Platform and Hitachi High-performance NAS Platform, powered by BlueArc System Administration Guide for details. Table 1-7 lists the required connection settings for monitoring NAS Platform storage subsystems.

Details
The IP address of the administrative EVS of the NAS Platform storage subsystem. The port (161) where the SNMP administrative EVS of the NAS Platform storage subsystem waits for the communication. The name that is used for the SNMP administrative EVS of the NAS Platform storage subsystem.

For Advanced Monitoring, if the monitored NAS Platform storage subsystem is a cluster system, then enable the SNMP message forward on External SMU. To forward the SNMP messages between the SMU and Admin EVS: 1. Check if the IP Forwarding is enabled in /etc/sysctl.conf (1 -> forwarding is enabled, 0-> forwarding is not enabled) # Controls IP packet forwarding net.ipv4.ip_forward = 1 If you changed the setting from 0 to 1 in the file, then you have to reboot to activate this setting. If you cannot immediately reboot after you have edited the file, then you can enable IP forwarding by setting the contents of /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ ip_forward to 1. For example, run the following command to enable it: echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward NOTE: Before proceeding to step 2, confirm that the Admin EVS IP can be pinged from the External SMU. 2. Run the following commands to enable forwarding of SNMP requests: iptables -A PREROUTING -t nat -p udp -d <External smu ip> --dport 161 -j DNAT --to <Admin EVS IP>:161 iptables -A POSTROUTING -t nat -p udp -s <Admin EVS IP> --sport 161 -j SNAT --to <External SMU IP>:161

3. Run the following command to make sure the above rules are added: iptables t nat -n L 4. Run the following command to save the rules permanently: service iptables save

Preparing SSH for the NAS Platform Storage Subsystem

To discover and monitor a NAS Platform storage subsystem for Advanced Monitoring, the following configuration is required: Enable connection using SSH2 Permit SSH password authentication

For example, to create a user account for IT Operations Analyzer, to log on using SSH: If it is a cluster node or 3100/3200 single node, create the user account on External SMU If it is a single node 3080/3090, create the user account on a NAS Platform storage subsystem

To create a user account: NOTE: The actual process of creating a user account to access the bash prompt may be different, depending on your environment. 1. Login using the default user credentials. 2. Run exit to exit from the default prompt or if it prompts to select a server or press q to exit, then press q to exit from the default prompt. 3. Run su command for root privileges 4. Run useradd m <username> to create a user account. 5. Run passwd <username> to set the password for the created user account. 6. Comment the line /usr/local/bin/siconsole in the file.bash_profile existing in the created user accounts home directory. echo Not executing the following line #/usr/local/bin/siconsole 7. Try logging in using this user account. Confirm that you are directed to the bash prompt. 8. Add the credential information in IT Operations Analyzer, and select the SSH protocol and the SNMP for the HNAS node. For credential information see Credential information for IT Operations Analyzer configuration. 9. Discover the node.

This chapter describes the process for initially installing the Hitachi NAS Platform plug-in, completing subsequent installations, and for removing the Hitachi NAS Platform plug-in.

Installing the Hitachi NAS Platform plug-in

On the management server, you will run the Setup.exe file for the plug-in to launch the InstallShield Wizard. Then, you will use the InstallShield Wizard, shown in Figure 2-1, to complete the installation.

NOTE: In a Microsoft Windows environment, you must be logged on as a user with administrator privileges. To install the Hitachi NAS Platform plug-in on the management server: 1. Run the executable file, Setup.exe. The installation wizard displays the Welcome panel. 2. Click Next to continue to the Installation panel. 3. Click Finish to complete the installation. 4. To confirm that the Hitachi NAS Platform plug-in was installed, see Confirming Hitachi NAS Platform plug-in installation and removal on page 2-4.

Reinstalling the Hitachi NAS Platform plug-in

After the Hitachi NAS Platform plug-in is installed on the management server, you can run the Setup.exe file again to reinstall program features, if needed. In this case, you will use the Setup Maintenance program of the InstallShield Wizard. Select Repair to retain the same configuration that was used during the last installation. To reinstall the Hitachi NAS Platform plug-in on the management server: 1. Run the executable file, Setup.exe. The Setup Maintenance program of the InstallShield Wizard displays. 2. Select Repair then click Next. 3. Click Finish to complete the installation.

Removing the Hitachi NAS Platform plug-in

You can uninstall the Hitachi NAS Platform plug-in by running the Setup.exe file for the plug-in. In this case, you will use the Setup Maintenance program of the InstallShield Wizard. Select Remove to remove all installed features. NOTE: In a Microsoft Windows environment, you must be logged on as a user with administrator privileges. To remove the Hitachi NAS Platform plug-in from the management server: 1. Run the executable file, Setup.exe. The Setup Maintenance program of the InstallShield Wizard displays. 2. Select Remove then click Next. 3. In the confirmation window, click Yes. 4. Click Finish to complete the removal of the Hitachi NAS Platform plugin. 5. To confirm that the Hitachi NAS Platform plug-in was removed, see Confirming Hitachi NAS Platform plug-in installation and removal on page 2-4.

Confirming Hitachi NAS Platform plug-in installation and removal

Whenever you install or remove the Hitachi NAS Platform plug-in, you can confirm the outcome within the Settings module of IT Operations Analyzer. When you: Install the Hitachi NAS Platform plug-in, it is displayed in the Plug-in Control panel. Remove the Hitachi NAS Platform plug-in, it is no longer listed in the Plug-in Control panel.

Figure 2-2 provides an example of the Plug-in Control panel. The Hitachi NAS Platform link is displayed. In this case, the plug-in has been installed.

To confirm the Hitachi NAS Platform plug-in outcome: 1. Log on to IT Operations Analyzer. 2. Click Settings to display the Settings Menu. 3. From the Settings Menus choose Plug-in Control. 4. If you: Installed the Hitachi NAS Platform plug-in, verify that it is listed in the Plug-in Control panel. If it is listed, click the Hitachi NAS Platform link to view the plug-in information. Removed the Hitachi NAS Platform plug-in, verify that no Hitachi NAS Platform link is listed in the Plug-in Control panel.

You can view NAS Platform nodes, components, and performance information within the Monitoring module: 1. Click Monitoring Menu. 2. Select All nodes. The All nodes panel lists every node.

Viewing status information for NAS Platform nodes

Figure 3-1 shows the status information that is displayed for a selected storage node. The node was discovered by the Hitachi NAS Platform plug-in.

Reviewing the limitations for the Hitachi NAS Platform plug-in

The Hitachi NAS Platform plug-in that applies to the NAS Platform nodes that are monitored by IT Operations Analyzer has the following limitations. These items apply to the information in the Monitoring module: Root Cause Analysis (RCA) information for the Standard Storage Pool metric, Storage Pool write cache hit ratio, is not available. When a NAS Platform disk drive fails, the RCA that is based on the relationship between the failed disk drive and the server which accesses the NAS Platform file share, is not available. On the Status Info tab, the Management IP address in the Cluster Information section will show the IP address which has been configured first (private or public). However, both IP addresses are not shown. In a cluster environment, a cluster consists of multiple physical NAS Platform nodes. The Status Info tab displays clustered physical NAS Platform nodes as a single node. The Cluster Information section of the Status Info tab lists each physical node in the cluster. The physical nodes that form a cluster are represented as individual components in the Components tab. If you select Advanced monitoring option, NAS Platform storage subsystem events log generates multiple Logged In and Logged Out events log. You can view the logs in External SMU UI. Advanced monitoring requires one External SMU per cluster or single node.
