It is very important to know mber moisture during all phases of wood working, from the purchasing of sawed wood unl its nal painng. Although the weighing method (rao between weight before and aer drying process) is the only worldwide recognized reference method for the exact measurement of moisture, many good instruments (but even more easy-to-use, faster and less intrusive) are today available on the market for most of applicaons. The most important thing is, rst of all, to choose the right instrument, according to the specic needs, since dierent needs can only be sased with dierent instruments. Buying an instrument without having analysed the pros and the cons may oen lead to the wrong purchase and to users disappointment. Many meters are available today on the market and can be divided into two main groups: contact meters (which measure the dielectric characteriscs of wood) and pin type meters (which measure the resistance between two electrodes). Contact meters or pin type meters? Contact meters can make readings in depth, due to the generated electric eld. The reading depth depends on the characteriscs of the instrument, on the density of the material to be measured and its moisture content. The obtained value is an average of measured moisture value, which is calculated with decreasing sensivity at the increase of depth. Pin type meters are used to measure the electric resistance between two electrodes. The reading is made only on the space between the two electrodes at the depth where they have been inserted. The measured value corresponds to the maximum moisture between Contact meter the electrodes, both on surface and in depth. If the highest moisture is in the middle, you can easily esmate the moisture distribuon into the board simply by nocing the reading changes on the instrument while scking the electrodes. Otherwise, the only other way to get this informaon is by using insulated electrodes, with unshielded ends, to avoid the inuence of surface layers on readings. From this dierence between the two meters, it becomes clear that the only condion in which we can compare the measurements obtained with the two instruments is with seasoned or dried wood, in which moisture is uniformly distributed into the wood.

Precision The instruments produced by LogicaH&S have been calibrated on internal reference samples, which are based on measurements taken on many mber species, whose moisture have been determined according to the regulaon UNI 9091-2/87 (weighing method). Other mbers have been classied in analogy with tested samples. As wood is not a homogeneous material, the instruments performance cannot be automacally guaranteed on samples which are dierent from tested ones, even if of the same wood species. For this reason, on customers request, LogicaH&S can supply all instruments with the Cercate of Inspecon which is made directly on customers wood, released by C A T A S S . p . A . LG43 - Pin type moisture meter/thermo hygrometer

LG43 is a resistance (pin-type) moisture meter which returns the moisture content of the materials measuring their electrical resistance through two electrodes that must be stuck into the material. It is equipped with a microprocessor circuit to automacally compensate the readings from dierent materials (wood, building materials, paper). It can be supplied with a plasc handle (/T version), for surface measurement through conducve rubber electrodes or very thin nails, with a special hammer (/M) to sck the electrodes in depth or with both the accessories (/TM). It is especially suitable for measures on not dried/ seasoned mber or to detect the distribuon of the moisture across the material. The measure performed using an alternate current, assuring an opmum stability even in case of high humidity contents. The mber moisture indicaon is automacally compensated on basis of the mber temperature, which can be set manually by the operator (useful when measuring mber just out from the kiln dryer) or measured by the instrument by its internal sensor or the external RT/T sensor (oponal). An addional, oponal, sensor (SPF) is available to measure the sawdust moisture. If equipped with the oponal RH/T sensor, LG43 becomes a complete diagnosc instrument for your kiln dryer, able to measure the air temperature and relave humidity, which can be also displayed in EMC format (mber Equilibrium Moisture Content).

LG31 is an instrument developed to measure connuously the humidity of the mber. Supplied into a praccal case suitable for panel mounng (DIN), it is the simplest and cheapest soluon to survey the progress of the drying cycle in your kiln. LG38 panel mounng semi automac kiln controller

LG38 is an instrument developed to measure connuously the humidity of the mber and to control the climate inside the kiln. It has 4 mber probes inputs whose readings are automacally compensated on basis of the mber temperature. The climate of the cell is determined by means of two temperature probes (Dry Bulb and Wet Bulb); the WB probe must be wrapped with a coon cloth, that must be maintained always wet (cloth and bath are not included in the supply). The temperature dierence among dry and wet probes, due to water evaporaon, is directly related to the cell moisture content. LG38 is equipped with 5 relays to control the dampers, sprayers, heater and reversible fans. Supplied into a praccal case suitable for panel mounng (DIN), it is the simplest and more aordable soluon to control your kiln and survey the progress of the drying cycle.

EASY - Semi automac mber kiln controller

EASY controller is addicted to the most tradional users who prefer to run the drying cycle by themselves. It is a semiautomac controller, used to measure the mber moisture and to maintain into the chamber the equilibrium temperature and moisture previously set by the user, according to his own personal experience. In this version there is no need of program sengs: you only have to set the type of wood to be dried, the desired equilibrium temperature and moisture inside the chamber, according to mber moisture content measured by the instrument.

HELIOS - Automac mber kiln controller.

HELIOS kiln controller has been created with the precise purpose to obtaining good reliability and great performances with a very low price, by removing all unnecessary parts for the correct run of drying process. This instrument is parcularly suitable to control small kilns or, generally, all systems in which is necessary to maintain a good standard of quality and to reduce costs: HELIOS is the instrument with the best price/performance rao today available on the market. Simply by seng the desired drying program, by wring it directly or by recalling a drying program from the memory (a standard one or a program previously saved by the user), HELIOS controller is able to run the drying cycle in a fully automac way. HELIOS includes into a single sealed box (IP55) the control panel and the amplier for the signals coming from the mber probes. DELPHI - LCD based automac kiln controller

The user interface of Delphi, based on a LCD graphic display, allows an easy set-up also to not skilled users, because all seng are made through self-explaining menu while the access to most advanced funcons is obtained through other menus, reserved to the assistance service. To further improve the friendly interface of DELPHI, it adopts an useful method, based on intelligent buons (iBuon ) that can be used to save and recall drying programs (in addion to internal memory), to protect the controller set-up against not authorized people and to upgrade the controller soware. Having a drying program saved into an iBuon, everybody can start a drying cycle, simply by laying the buon on DELPHI (desktop version) the addicted reader. The same soluon can also be used to order to your assistance centre a drying program ready to use, without need to inpung it manually into the controller, or to transfer a program from a controller to another one. Obviously there are also many standard programs (over 80) ready to use for a lot of wood essences, recallable from an addicted menu, useful for users without parcular needs or for beginners. DELPHI can be supplied with LG25, a probe amplier which assures the maximum reliability together with the beer external noise rejecon. The amplier comes in a sealed (IP65) aluminium case, and complete with wirings for the probe boxes inside the kiln made by shielded and Teon insulated cables. Oponally, Delphi can also be supplied also with LG35 ampliers (with tradional EMC plates or digital sensors). The probe boxes are made using polycarbonate hermec cases, assuring a good protecon against dust on their internal side, a problem than aects the measures of many compeve systems. DELPHI allows a very exible management of the drying cycle, thanks to 10 exible phases combined with progressive transions of the kiln climate from phase to phase. Every phase can be dened by gradient, EMC value or duraon. A so high exibility allows Delphi to be used also to manage heat treatment (HT) cycles in accordance to DELPHI (panel version) the latest phytosanitary prescripons. DELPHI is based on KILN BUS system, a communicaon protocol which makes it compable with all the sensors/ actuators for kiln dryers today available and to be developed in the next future, so it is suitable for future upgrades. In addion it comes with a serial interface (double standard - RS232 + RS485) useful to connect it to a master PC (running WoodWizard 2 soware). In the panel version (easy wiring) DELPHI controller is supplied split in two very small units: the visualizaon module and the power module. With this soluon the visualizaon module can be installed on the front panel of the switchboard while the power module can be installed directly inside it, for a very dy wiring; the link between the modules is made with a single pre assembled cable. But, if you prefer, the same soluon could also be used to install the power module into the switchboard and the visualizaon module directly in your oce, far up to 1,2Km!

DELPHI - VAC2 (Vacuum kilns controller)

Starng from the base of DELPHI controllers and adding a special sensor (LG35 - relave humidity, temperature and absolute pressure) designed for this purpose, a new, powerful and exible controller for vacuum mber kiln dryers has been developed. The controller performs the whole management of the kiln, included the depression regulaon, the draining tank management, the regulaon of kiln climate and the measurement of mber moisture. The same product can be congured to operate with kilns having convenonal heang or plates heang with connuous, disconnuous or semi-disconnuous vacuum (the controller performs automacally the commutaon from connuous and disconnuous method).

dTOUCH - a step ahead in wood drying.

dTOUCH is a step ahead in the control systems for kiln dryers, since it combines an advanced and exible control system with the know-how of internaonal experts in the mber drying eld. dTOUCH h as been developed in cooperaon with IVALSA, the Italian Research Instute, member of CNR, which includes a laboratory for research and tests about mber drying. In addion to all the funcons already implemented in Delphi plus many other, dTOUCH includes a wide range of base drying programs for over 400 mber species, including also some special cycles to maintaining/ changing the natural colour of the wood, for fast drying and so on. dTOUCH uses this data base, together with the informaon received from the sensors and the inputs from the user (such as required quality, priority to me or to quality, parcular requirements..) to create each me the program more suitable to drying the wood according to the specic needs of the user ...because a spread library of drying programs is not enough: several are the possible requirements, and several must be the programs for sasfy them... dTOUCH can automacally idenfy some crical condions (like frozen wood, casehardened wood etc.) and modify the drying cycle in order to include the most suitable remedy for the idened problem. The creaon of a customized program using dTOUCH does not more require the user to learn about drying methods and programming details (temperature, humidity, me, etc..); it is enough to explain to the system what are the specic requirements by answering to some simple quesons and the system will create the most suitable cycle. dTOUCH is the drying expert always at your disposal. dTOUCH An evolving system dTOUCH is a control system with a great potenal, which is now just at the rst stage of its development and which will be expanded in the next future, thanks to the cooperaon with IVALSA and to the experimentaon on pilot plants. The system is based on a touch sensive, colour LCD screen. All the selectable funcons are idened by buons or blue colour. With dTOUCH a single touch on the screen is enough to switch from the most complete automac management to the simplest semi-automac mode, without need for any programming skill. dTOUCH The exible soluon Being based on Kiln Bus protocol, dTOUCH is compable with all the most recent sensors and interfaces developed by Logica H&S. The number of probes and their typology can be congured as required to sasfy whatever control need, including interfacing to non convenonal sensor or sensors for special uses like ISPM15 compliant heat treatment. Conguraon based on LG35 ampliers, which are built directly into the probes boxes, which should be installed inside the kiln; especially suitable for drying cycles at temperatures up to 80C. C001668 Controller mod. dTOUCH LG36 (2T,2EMC,4+4MC) The conguraon includes: dTOUCH control panel, LG29 relay output unit LG29, LG36 wireless sensors receiver, 2 x wireless EMC box (to be installed inside the kiln, each one with one EMC and one temperature probe), 4 x MC sensor (surface + core), set electrodes x 3 lengths. Conguraon based on a wireless sensors network, especially suitable for drying cycles up to 100C, where it is preferable to avoid connecon cables for MC probes. The number of probes can be increased simply purchasing addional transmiers; every MC transmier has two moisture sensors (surface + core) plus one temperature sensor. All the above examples use LG29 as relays output unit, to drive proporonally aps, heang valve and sprayers (by pulses) and to manage the fans inversion and speed (through a 0-10 analog output). Wireless Sensors System by LogicaH&S

Based on a receiver and a series of remote sensors, this system is suitable to measure the mber moisture, its core temperature and the environment climate (temperature, relave humidity and EMC). The system can be used inside the kiln, instead of the standard sensors in dTOUCH or Delphi controllers, eliminang the cables and making easier the posioning and the management of the stacks. LG34 - Wireless receiver unit

LG34 is the heart of the system, which receives the data transmied from all the acve wireless sensors posioned into the operave range of the system. It recognizes the kind of sensors connected and sort them on basis of their number and typology. The collected data can be stored into the memory of LG36 (data logging mode) or re-transmied immediately to the devices connected through the RS485 serial interface. The available protocols are KilnBus and the industry standard ModBus, suitable for connecon to PLC based systems.

LG36 Box EMC/RHT - environment climate sensor

The wall mounng environment climate sensor EMC Box is equipped with an external temperature probe and a clamp for cellulose plates for equilibrium moisture content measuring. The complete insulaon from every power source assures the highest immunity to earth related problems that somemes could aect the tradional EMC sensing devices. A model with digital RH/T sensor is also available, which measures temperature and relave humidity , calculang automacally also the equivalent EMC value. LG40 - Mulpurpose digital meter

LG40 is a mulpurpose digital meter which has been developed as reference thermometer for ISP15 applicaons. Based on Logica H&S KilnBus interface, it can be connected to a kiln network to perform an automac check of the process temperature probes before each starng of a new treatment cycle. The data measured by LG40 and the process probes is automacally recorded by WoodWizard2 soware and printed on the HT report. In addion to the temperature probe, a relave humidity probe having an operave range suitable for kiln applicaons, is now available.

LG20-VAP - Steaming cells controller

LG20-VAP is a control system to manage me and temperature sequences required for wood treatment into steaming cells. Using LG20VAP the user can set steaming cycles with maximum of 9 dierent temperature grades and set the me (expressed in hours) for each of them. It is also possible to set the speed of temperature increase, for a gradual step-by-step transion from a value to the next one. The temperature inside the steaming chamber and the current phase or, as alternave, the me le before the end of the treatment, are always displayed. Every set program can be saved into the controller's internal memory and can be recalled in the future with a simple sequence of keys. Up to 20 programs can be saved into controller's memory. LG20-VAP is provided with 3 relay outputs to control the steam inlet valve, the steam generator (with automac switch o at the end of the cycle) and to signal possible alarm condions. Another input is also available for an external alarm control (which can be normally open or closed), which, if acve, automacally disables the steaming process and enable an alarm warning signal on display.

LG35 - Measurement system

LG35 is a complete measuring system for the mber moisture and the climate into the drying cell. It is available in three versions according to the preferred cell humidity measuring method: by a cellulose plate (Equilibrium Moisture Content LG35-EMC) by an electronic Relave Humidity sensor (LG35-RH) by psychrometric method (through two temperature probes LG35-WDB). All the versions can be equipped with an oponal absolute pressure sensor, which makes them especially suitable for vacuum kilns applicaons. The device has been developed to be installed inside LG35 - RH the kiln, in order to transduce the signals directly from the source, reducing the eect of external interferences and making pointless the use of expensive high insulaon cables for signal transmission. LG30 - Kiln Bus data logging system

LG30 is a Kiln Bus compable device able to read up to 8 temperature sensors (NTC) or wha tever other sensor having a 0-10 V or -20mA output. Thanks to its RS485 interface, LG30 can be connected to a PC running a special version of WoodWizard2 soware program, in stand-alone conguraon or together with other devices (kiln controllers or other devices). It is parcularly suitable where several sensors are required, for example for temperature monitoring in heat treatment cycles requested for phytosanitary measures, or for monitoring several other parameters of kiln dryers (such as addional temperature or RH measurement points, air ow, energy consumpon and so on). The collected data, that can be saved and recalled from archives, is available in table (to be exported in other program for analysis) or in graphic format. The graphic representaon (with zoom) can be printed to generate reports especially useful to be displayed as proof in case of thermal treatments. LG30 can be supplied with external accessories to make easier the connecon of the sensors (box with sockets).

LG46 - Mul I/O module

LG46 is a module with several input/outputs digital /analogical, which can be connected to the control systems equipped with KilnBus Interface to enhance the compability with addional sensors / actuators. The product is also equipped with the industry standard ModBus protocol and can be connected to systems based on industrial PLC. The inputs are factory congurable to accept signals such as 0-10V, 4-20mA, PT100 temperature probes (2 or 3 wires) or NTC probes. The outputs can be set as analog 0-10V or as digital outputs (transistor or relay). This module is especially suitable to customize the control systems adding addional sensors, like special climac sensors, current or ow sensors for energy consumpon management etc. LG46 is supplied in a standard DIN 50022 case for a fast mounng on the switchboard rails.

LG47 - Moisture monitor.

LG47 is the simplest device to survey the moisture of the mber inside the kiln dryer. The product is suitable either for convenonal and for vacuum dryers. It consists of two plasc boxes: one should be installed inside the kiln and is equipped with six pairs of sockets for mber moisture probes the other should be installed outside the kiln and includes a switch to select the probe to be measured and a socket to connect a standard handheld moisture meter The two boxes are connected by a special, high insulaon cable. The product can be also supplied complete with a climate sensor (Equilibrium Moisture, Relave Humidity and Temperature) compable with LG43 moisture meter. This version, in addion to provide the informaon about kiln climate, eects automacally the temperature compensaon of the mber moisture.

CV485NG - RS232/RS485-RS422 Converter

CV485NG converts an RS232 output signal from a Personal Computer (or other device) to RS485 or RS422 electrical standard, which are suitable for connecon of many devices on a single serial line (mul point connecon), assuring a very good noise rejecon even at a long distance. The opon between automac transmission (with selfoperang soware - no conguraon is needed) and hardware transmission (driven by Request To Send signal) makes CV485NG a versale instrument which can be used in many applicaons. WoodWizard2 - Data acquision and remote control soware

WoodWizard2 is a SCADA soware from Logica H&S. It is compable with most of Logica kiln controllers and other devices based on Kiln-Bus interface. Very useful in plants having several dryers, to control and survey in real me all the kilns, it becomes necessary, in conjuncon with compable controllers or acquision boards, when there it is required to produce HT treatment cercates. WoodWizard2 records all the data of the process, including measured data, alarms occurred and user operaons; in addion it can be used to set-up, from a single place, all the kilns of the plant. The drying programs can be saved on disk to be used later or transferred on other controllers. The plant surveillance can also be made from a remote PC connected to the local one trough Internet or a direct telephonic line, using common remote desktop ulies for PC . Based on XP technology, the soware can run also on Windows Vista or Windows 7 operave systems, on whatever PC able to run the above O.S. The same PC running WoodWizard2 can be also used for the common oce needs: a stay resident part of the soware collects the data also while the main WoodWizard2 shell is closed and, if an alarm condion is detected, automacally launches the main program window.

dVIEW soware
dVIEW is the new Logica H&S soware for remote control and management, specic for dTOUCH series controllers. Running on PC equipped with Windows7, Vista or XP O.S., it allows to manage all the kilns of the plant from a single locaon (up to 32 kilns for the standard conguraon). A disnguish feature of dVIEW is to propose to the operator exactly the same user's interface which is available on the control panel; this makes able to work on the PC soware whoever is able to work on the local panel and vice versa: the learning curve is reduced and the producvity is increased. From the PC soware the operator can perform all the operaons available from the local panel; moreover the PC soware is able to record the drying data during the process, represenng them in table or graph format. The soware is also able to produce reports to cerfy the HT treatment performed on packaging materials, according to the internaonal rule ISPM15. Using dVIEW makes it easy to obtain the complete control of the plant through Internet, simply installing on the same PC one of the several ulies available for remote management of the desktop.

SmartHT - Easy soware for HT (Heat Treatment)

SmartHT is a PC soware able to produce HT (Heat Treatment) cercates according to the IPPC-FAO requirements. SmartHT makes your PC able to read up to 8 temperature probes and, if used together with LG29 relay unit, it transforms your PC in a complete control system for your kiln, able to control either the temperature and the moisture into the cell. (See following chapter for further details)

HT - Phytosanitary treatment.
The wooden packaging materials are considered responsible for the infestaon due to forestal parasites occurred in the United States, Canada, China and European Union, causing the promulgaon of several control and prevenon measures. To reduce the diusion of the parasites through the wooden packaging materials and to standardize the measures taken in the dierent Countries, some direcves has been dened by FAO during the IPPC convenon. Among the several treatments allowed for mber sterilizaon, there is also an high temperature treatment cycle. LogicaH&S soluons for heat treatment cycles. Logica H&S oers dierent soluons to perform HT cycles. We space from simple products, able to measure several temperature points and save the results in table and graphic form, without any acve control of the kiln, to fully automac systems able to control the kiln in order to perform very opmized HT cycles, with or without mber drying capabilies. Some of these systems accomplish also to the Italian regulaons for HT process, which require, in addion to the classical measures, also the automac vericaon of the measuring probes, through a reference thermometer (LG40), and a number of special protecons for the process and the recorded data.

Measuring and cercaon system.

These soluons do not oer a direct control of the kiln, that should be driven manually or by means of an external control systems. They are parcularly suitable to adapt exisng kilns to perform HT cycles or for users having occasional need to perform HT cycles. Using these systems, the user is responsible to set a cycle having temperature and duraon enough to sasfy the law requirements. Since there is no feedback to stop the kiln when the condions are reached, the surveillance of the operator is required, especially when the inial condions of the materials to be treated are not constant (for shape, dimensions, humidity content). When the minimum me and temperature condions required by the local regulaons are sased, a message appears on the screen, to inform the operator that the cycle is nished and the kiln can be turned o.

SmartHT basic can be used on one kiln only; to connect several kilns to the same PC, the version based on WoodWizard2 soware is required. WoodWizard2 + LG30 In addion to the SmartHT features, the same soluon based on WoodWizard2 soware oers the capability to connect several kilns to the same PC. The soware is compable both with the HT system and with most of the Kiln controllers from Logica H&S. Moreover WoodWizard2 accomplish to Italian HT regulaon requirements.

Measuring, Control and Cercaon systems.

SmartHT (not desned to Italian market) The system consists of the same elements of the SmartHT basic plus a relay output unit: SmartHT soware USB485 converter LG30 Data logging system Wood/Air temperature probes LG29 Power Unit This conguraon transforms the control and cercaon soluon in a system able to drive the kiln dryer automacally , according to the temperature and me seng, so performing very opmized HT cycles, without any need for the operator surveillance. This soluon is not available for Italian market and, as well as SmartHT basic, can control one kiln only. Drying and HT integrated systems. These systems, based on our dTouch, Delphi or M900 series controllers and a PC running dVIEW or WoodWizard2 soware, sum to the features of the measuring and control soluon, also the capability to perform drying cycles, which can be executed automacally instead of or immediately aer the HT cycle. This capability assures the maximum exibility of the kiln; the soware is compable also with Italian regulaon requirements.

Probe box To assure the best performances of the control system, probes boxes and cables inside the kiln must always be in perfect state: dust or damage may aect electrical insulaon and may cause erroneous measures. As spare parts, we can also supply boxes provided with temperature probe (NTC) and cellulose clamp, with 3 or 6 connectors for probe cables or with direct output of 2 or 4 probe cables. Panels are provided with high insulaon cable (Teon) for the connecon to the amplier (available length: from 5 to 30m - mulple of 5m).
