Freezing temperatures

Obviously we all know in Antarctica it is extremely cold and has some of the fierce weathers ever seen. The coldest months are August, September and October as the temperatures are -60 degrees Celsius or more. The lowest temperature ever recorded is -89.2 degrees Celsius. There are a few ways to overcome the freezing temperatures such as going to Antarctica at the perfect months. If you Plan to go just for a few days or less than 4 weeks then the ideal month for you is January as it has the warmest temperature of about 25 degrees Celsius. whereas if you plan to go for about 2 months then its best for you to arrive at Antarctica at the start of December and throughout the days you will come to January, this helps to overcome the freezing temperatures as the consequences of going to in a freezing month can be vital as you might get frostbite which is a part of the body that gets exposed and a layer of cold ice is formed or just the blood stops circulating and that part of the body can fall of and break. For example in Antarctica someones finger froze and when the person touched it his finger literally fell off. If you do plan to go in a very cold month then without the right kit u might die. These are some of the things you will need throughout your journey: -Hillberg Tent -Greenland Sledge (by Roger Dains Snow Sledge) -Goggles Mask -Hat -Marmot working gloves: much bigger and warmer inside -Life Venture Stuff sack: ties at the top keeps everything dry -Wind proof coat: wind proof; long coat, well ventilated

These Are some of the optional things that might help you: -Harness -Iridium sat phone- Battery free -MSR CookerTitanium cooking pot. Helps to measure fuel and water -Buck Knife: Helps mend tent, cut robes, cooking.

2. Lack of food At one point you might there might be a lack of food. So you have to get yourself prepared first. men called Robert Scott and Roald Amundsen were explorers who set out to reach the south pole.In order to overcome the challenge of the difficult landscape Scott took 19 ponies, motarised sledge and some dogs. Amundsen took 52 dogs and returned with 11. In order to survive these men took animals with them, with the animals they could get help for transport and food. The dogs fed on seals and penguins whereas Scott ate the ponies. If you are travelling in Antarctica then you will need a lot of calories per day here is the table: MANHAULING SLEDGES USES PER DAY TRAVELLING BY DOG SLEDGE USES PER DAY TRAVELLING BY SKIDOO USES PER DAY WORKING MAINLY INSIDE STATION BUILDINGS 6500 Calories needed 5000 Calories needed 3350 Calories needed 2750 Calories needed

Its ideal to take dried food for example: -LOTS OF Chocolate bars -Snacks(crisps, small drinks and such) -dried fruit -cereal bars -freeze dried meals 3. 24 hour darkness For darkness you cant really say anthing as all you would need is: -Night vision Goggles to see in the dark -A small but very bright flash light -And maybe a head lamp 4. The landscape You will need to know about the Land scape of Antarctica, some of them I am going to explain are Crevasses, ice sheet, Landform. 1.Crevasses Crevasses are usually found in Mountains, Crevasses are dangerous and can be a challenge for explorers because sometimes you can suddenly fall and its very risky to go to the other side. It can affect you getting to the side and then you might injure yourself which also affects where you want to go. Advice: Never cross a crevasse unless u have to.

These form when a glacier is forced over a ridge. The top of the glacier is more brittle and opens up to from large gaps (crevasse). 2. Ice Sheet Antarctica is covered in an ice sheet. Ice sheets can be a challenge because it can slow down the travelling rate. It can effect decrease the energy you have. An Ice sheet covers about 98% of the Antarctic continent and is the largest single mass of ice on earth. 3.Landorm A landform is a feature in the landscape e.g Mountain, Ice sheet, Ice shelf or Crevasse. The landform is a challenge and for which group of people like Tourist, Explorer and Thrill seekers go to.
