The Sun
New Jersey recently released
its annual school performance re-
port documenting how well
schools in the state are educating
their students. Cinnaminson
High School scored high com-
pared to other schools in the state
in the academic achievement and
graduation and post-secondary
performance categories.
The report studies multiple in-
dicators, such as test scores, ab-
sences, dropout rates, graduation
rates and the number of students
going on to enroll in college.
Cinnaminson Township Public
Schools Superintendent Salva-
tore J. Illuzzi said the administra-
tion was very pleased with the re-
sults.
The school for the most part
has always performed well, Il-

Editors note: The following is
posted on the Cinnaminson Fire
Department website at www.cin-
naminsonfire.org.
The Board of Fire Commis-
sioners of Cinnaminson has
prosed a budget for 2014 that will
once again result in no increase
in the amount of funds raised by
taxation.
The total budget for 2014 is
$3,336,898, of which $2,741,234 is
raised by taxation. The remain-
ing funds come from surplus car-
ried over from 2013, grants, inter-
est, inspection fees and funds re-
served for the purchase of the two
new fire trucks.
This is the sixth year in a row
where the fire district tax has re-
mained the same.
The budget still requires voter
approval. Residents can come out
and vote on Saturday, Feb. 15 be-
tween 2 p.m. and 9 p.m. at the Cin-
naminson Township Community
Center, 1621 Riverton Road.
Regarding proposed salaries,
the Cinnaminson Fire Depart-
ment is a combination fire de-
partment. It is comprised of both
career and volunteers firefight-
ers. The rescue and engine com-
pany is staffed 24 hours a day, 365
day a year. To do this, it takes
four firefighters or EMTs on each
of three 24-hour shifts. This 24-
hour staffed company ensures the
department can reach the scene
of an emergency as quickly as
possible. In 2013, the Cinnamin-
son Fire Department responded
to 1,305 calls for assistance, a
slight decrease over the previous
year. All of the career staff and
many of the volunteers are certi-
fied emergency medical techni-
cians and all are certified in
CPR/AED. Many members also
hold fire code enforcement certifi-
cation and confined space techni-
cian certification as well as oth-
ers that all require attendance at
continuing education seminars in
order to qualify for recertifica-
tion.
Regarding proposed equip-
ment, the life expectancy of a
pumper or rescue-pumper is be-
tween 15 and 18 years. The life ex-
pectancy of an aerial ladder
truck is between 20 and 25 years.
To prepare for these major pur-
chases the board established, and
has been funding, an apparatus
replacement reserve fund. In
2012, voters approved the replace-
ment of two 1994 fire trucks. This
apparatus replacement reserve
fund was applied to the apparatus
purchase to minimize the amount
of funding that needed to be fi-
nanced. This years budget con-
tinues to provide funds to prepare
for the next round of apparatus
replacement which will include
two 2000 pumpers once the new
apparatus are paid off.
Funds for the 2014 budget come
from several sources, including
USFA revenue (inspections and
registrations), grants, interest,
surplus from unexpended 2013
budget items, and finally funds
raised by taxation. This last item,
funds raised by taxation, has re-
mained the same for six years.
Income Sources:
USFA revenue = $148,450
Anticipated grant revenue
= $5,733
Anticipated sale of equip-
ment = $103,170
Surplus from 2013 =
$338,311
Amount raised by taxation
= 2,741,234
Total budget = 3,336,898
Again, the budget still requires
voter approval. Residents can
come out and vote on Saturday,
Feb. 15 between 2 p.m. and 9 p.m.
at the Cinnaminson Township
Community Center, 1621 Riverton
Road, Cinnaminson.
Officials: Proposed fire budget would
not increase funds raised by taxation

T
he nations second-largest
drugstore chain took a stand
last week: By October, it will no
longer sell tobacco products at its 7,600
stores.
To that, we say good for you, CVS,
even if you are being inconsistent in
your message.
CVS Caremark unit is a major
pharmacy benefits manager for busi-
nesses and the U.S. governments
Medicare program. As such, it has be-
come a major health-care business,
trailing only Walgreen Co. as the
largest pharmacy chain in the country.
CVS made a bold, precedent-setting
move, said Dr. Risa Lavizzo-Mourey,
the chief executive officer of the
Robert Wood Johnson Foundation,
because it acknowledges that phar-
macies have become health-care set-
tings.
Analysts believe CVS decision
could convince Walgreen Co., Rite Aid
Corp. the third-largest pharmacy
chain and other pharmacies
throughout the country to make a sim-
ilar move to help eliminate smoking in
the United States.
Piggybacking the decision to halt to-
bacco sales, CVS executives said the
company would replace some of the
lost sales through smoking cessation
programs.
Its hard to argue with CVS deci-
sion, as any move to improve public
health has to be seen as positive. But
its a little hypocritical, dont you
think?
If the reason why CVS will stop sell-
ing tobacco is because it believes it is a
health-care setting, then shouldnt it
stop selling other unhealthy items
such as greasy potato chips, sugary
soft drinks and other processed foods
as well? Does this country also not
have an obesity problem?
One step at a time, you say? That
makes sense. Smoking first; obesity
second. Sounds like a plan.
In all seriousness, good for CVS.
Good for taking a stand that, even if it
might improve the bottom line in the
long run, will surely hurt it in the
short term.
Other pharmacies should follow
suit. Health-care settings should
promote healthy living.
in our opinion
No smoking here!
Sure, it might be slightly hypocritical, but good for CVS for taking a stand
Your thoughts
What are your thoughts on the move by
CVS to not sell tobacco products at their
stores? What role should private busi-
nessess have in health-care initiatives?
How about public entities such as the
municipality? Share your thoughts with a
letter to the editor.

The academic achievement category
measures the knowledge students have in
math and language arts and includes the
results of the New Jersey High School Pro-
ficiency Assessment exam.
According to the report, CHS scored
higher than 70 percent of other schools in
the state in HSPA language arts proficien-
cy and higher than 60 percent of other
schools in the state in HSPA math profi-
ciency.
I think its a credit to the principal and
to the hard work of the students, Illuzi
said.
The graduation and post-secondary cate-
gory measures graduation rates, dropout
rates and attendance at post-secondary in-
stitutions.
According to the report, CHS scored
higher than 90 percent of other schools in
the state in regard to its overall graduation
rate.
I think with the graduation rate, were
No. 1 in the county, which is a remarkable
achievement, Illuzi said.
The only major area CHS did not score
highly in was the college and career readi-
ness category.
The category measures how prepared
students are for college and careers by ex-
amining factors such as the number of stu-
dents enrolled in the 12th grade who took
the Scholastic Aptitude Test or American
College Testing assessment, the percentage
of students who scored above the SAT
benchmark of 1550, and the percentage of
11th and 12th graders who took at least one
AP or IB test in English, math, social stud-
ies or science.
According to the report, the SAT bench-
mark score of 1550 in critical reading,
mathematics and writing combined indi-
cates a 65 percent likelihood of students
achieving a B- average or higher during
their first year of college.
CHS performed slightly higher than
other schools in the state in regard to per-
formance on the Scholastic Aptitude Test,
with 44.4 percent of CHS students scoring
1550 or above, compared to the state aver-
age of 43.9 percent.
Illuzzi said he attributes CHS low score
in the college and career readiness catego-
ry to a discrepancy in the data.
Its inconsistent, Illuzzi said. You
cant be high in two and low in the third.
Even with Cinnaminson continuing to

rank highly on the report
throughout the years, Illuzzi has
no plans to coast on past achieve-
ments.
One of the things I found is
that every year, because were
dealing with different students
and tests, its difficult to say well
be back there next year, Illuzzi
said.
Ultimately, Illuzzi said its the
students and the people around
them who matter most.
Were very proud to say re-
garding our graduation rate that
were serving our students and
our community, Illuzzi said.
