DEBUGGING - The game crashes before I start to play! This probably can be caused due to problems with drivers, hardware or Direct X. The effects of such bugs can be fixed by installing updated drivers or changing some settings. - When I play for quite a long time, the game crashes. I don t have any trouble with Windows function, or with applications such as Internet Explorer or older games. This happens mainly due to graphic (display) driver problems. If you don t update drivers for several months, it can cause problems with the game. In order to resolve the problem, install the latest version of the driver. - Troubles with the Internet Game In order to play Cossacks II - Battle for Europe over the internet you computer

has to have access to the internet. - Display refresh rate usually exceeds permissible limits due to the screen resolution change. Try to set the maximum refresh rate manually. In order to do that set the rate value which is supported for a given resolution in VideoConfig.txt: RefreshRateBias = <rate value, Hz>. E.g.: RefreshRateBias = 75 - I notice graphical bugs during the game. Install an updated video driver and new DirectX version 9.0c. Do the same thing for audio problems install a new driver for your audio card. =================================================================== 7. FIREWALLS AND ROUTERS When a computer can access basic Internet services and can play the game, Internet play is not usually much of a problem unless the computer accesses the Internet through a router or firewall. Often, special appliances, sometimes called "Fireboxes", combine Firewall and Router functions into a single easy-to-configure device. Unfortunately, firewalls and routers are topics where the specifics quickly become quite incomprehensible to people who don't work with them. In general, most firewall/routers can be easily configured so that our game can be played through them by at least one computer. Also, the person who configures them can use the information supplied below to either make the needed changes or to tell you why such changes can't be done. Resolving problems between a Firewall and the Cossacks II - Battle for Europe ga me - Firewall problems are easy to define. They are problems where certain types of Internet services or data are BLOCKED. Cossacks II - Battle for Europ e requires that TCP and UDP ports 34000-34005 and TCP port 6667 be open for communication in both directions. - Not only must UDP packets be able to pass through the firewall in both directions, but computers on both sides of the firewall must be able to initiate the flow of data important for "stateful" packet filtering firewalls that generally permit packets to flow in both directions ONLY once the flow is initiated by a computer behind the firewall, but tend to block connection attempts by hosts on the outside of the firewall to hosts within. Resolving problems with Cossacks II - Battle for Europe and Internet Routers (ga teways) - Routing problems arise most frequently in situations where one or more computers use a gateway router or firewall/router to access the Internet. If the computers on an Internet-connected network have their own real routable IP address leased from an ISP- even dynamic ones assigned using DHCP, there should be no routing problems with the Cossacks II - Battle

for Europe game. - However, if a computer doesn't have a routable IP address, but instead depends on a router that uses Network Address Translation (NAT) so that the router's one real routable IP address can be used by all computers on the LAN for Internet access, there are likely to be problems with the Cossacks II - Battle for Europe game unless steps are taken to allow other computers on the Internet to initiate connections with that computer. This is because with only the router having a real routable IP address, there is no way for computers on the Internet to send information specifically to computers on a LAN served in this manner, because the only IP address they can send to is the real routable address of the router. One of three things must be done: 1. The cheapest and most straightforward solution is to have the router send all packets coming to it from the Internet on TCP and UDP ports 34000-34005 and TCP port 6667 to a specific computer. This means that only that one computer on the LAN can play Cossacks II - Battle for Euro pe on the Internet because only it is the only one that can receive connection r equests from other players outside the LAN. 2. The next simplest solution is to have a pool of real routable IP addresses for One-to-One Network Address translation. In One-to-One NAT masquerades, the router substitutes or "masquerades" the non-routable IP address of a LAN computer with a real routable IP addressed assigned to that computer from the pool. Computers and other hosts on the Internet can send data to the router using the Masquerade address and the router will know which LAN computer to send that data to because of the One-to-One NAT assignment. 3. An extreme case that should really work well but is more difficult and expensive is configuring a LAN computer to use a real routable IP address. That computer would either need two network interfaces (one for the LAN and one for the Internet) or it could not be connected to both the LAN and the Internet. Cossacks II - Battle for Europe and Routers That Use NAT: - Cossacks II - Battle for Europe does not guarantee full functionality for comp uters accessing the Internet via a router using NAT or even One-to-One NAT. Users with computers connected in this way are limited to joining games hosted by others since these users cannot create their own games. Actually they can create games, but other players can't see, much less, join them. Full function ality is possible but it depends on the network topology and the type of router used . =================================================================== 8. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

HINTS AND TIPS - If you have a graphic card with less than 128MB and you experience problems with the game s performance, try to set the animation quality on low (and, optionall y, Shadows as well). The display performance should improve. - During a multiplayer game, don t use the Alt-Tab combination or you ll automatical

ly lose. - In order to play Internet games comfortably and control great masses of forces , you should have 1GB of system memory in your computer. - In order to increase Internet game speed, it s recommended to set your display s creen resolution to 1024 x 768. - In the event of crashes, problems with performance and game loading, check the swap-file settings (the virtual memory swapping file). You can adjust it as follows (Windows XP): Right-click on My Computer and click on the Properties item in the menu. In the Properties window, click on the Advanced tab. In the window that appears, click the Settings button in the Performance section . Click the Advanced tab in the Performance Options window that appears then click on the Change button in the Virtual memory section. In the Virtual Memory window th e system disk it s necessary to set either System managed size or choose Custom Size and enter 3200 and 4400 for the Initial and Maximum sizes. Click Set and restart your computer. Try setting the swap file size to System managed size first, but if this doesn t help use the abovementioned sizes. ================================================================================ ==== 11.
