Victorian Scrapbook Albums

In the Victorian era collecting was a popular childhood hobby. Scraps, which often came inside magazines, were expressly made to be pasted into albums. This activity was considered to be educational for children as it taught them organisation, classication and developed their artistic senses.

This selection of scraps has been compiled from the Victorian Scrapbook Album (A7520) from the Powerhouse Museums Collection. This album is thought to have been compiled between 1880 and 1890. It contains commercially produced embossed and die cut scraps. The Victorians were avid collectors and these albums illustrate their preoccupation with collecting and arranging

pictures. The albums have been carefully arranged into themes. A few pages also contain pressed and dried owers and ferns, as well as personal Christmas and birthday cards. Note: Some of the pages in this activity are a compilation of Valentines Day themed scraps and are not on their original pages or in their original arrangements.
