Overview
1 The distributed 1MW Solar PV power plant shall consist of a number of small size plants installed on rooftops of academic buildings and connectedtogrid. 2 Each plant output shall be connected to Low Voltage (LV) distribution gridsupplyconnectedintheacademicareaofIITBombay. 3 National Centre of Photovoltaic Research and Education (NCPRE), IIT Bombay shall oversight design, engineering and implementation of the plant. 4 IIT Bombay shall select EPC integrator responsible for design, engineering,procurement,installationandcommissioningoftheplant. 5 EPCintegratorshallbealsoresponsibleforoperationandmaintenanceas wellasmonitoringoftheplantforthefirst5yearsandshallhandoverthe planttoFacilities,IITBombayattheendofthe5thyear.

SystemDescriptionandSpecifications
GeneralSystem

1 Based on the feasibility study report, 5 plants of 100kW peak PV (100kWp),3plantsof75kWp,and4plantsof50kWpand3plantsof 25kWp(totalof1MWp)arerequiredtobeinstalled.PleasereferTable 1. The individual plant capacity and the number of plants of a given capacity shall be subject to change based on academic building requirementsandavailability. 2 Actual number of plants for each capacity may change depending on spaceavailability.ButthetotalnumberofPVplantswillremain15. 3 Theproposalisrequiredfor25kW,40kW,50kW,60kW,75kW,85kW and 100kW peak PV power rated plants. Depending on the space availability, actual number of PV plants for each capacity may vary suchthatthetotalrequestedplantcapacityis1MWpeak. 4 The proposal is also required for one off solar radiation and environmentmonitoringsystemtobeinstalledononeofthebuildings withthePVpowerplant. 5 Theoperatinglifeoftheplantshallbeminimum25years. 6 EachplantshallfeedACpowerto the LowTension (LT)distribution grid powersupplyoftherespective buildingoradjacentbuildingfor captivepowerconsumption. 7 EachplantshallmonitorsolargeneratedenergyusingplantACenergy meter independent of load energy monitoring. Remote monitoring facilityshouldbemadeavailable. 8 EachplantshallconsistofPVarray,fixedPVarraysupportstructure, String/Array combiner boxes, DC cabling, DC distribution box, Inverter,ACcabling,ACdistributionbox,plantACenergymeter,load energymeteranddataacquisitionsystem. 9 TheindividualSolarPVarrayshallbeinstalledonexistingterraceof thebuildingusingfixedPVarraysupportstructure. 10 The individual string/array combiner boxes and DC cabling shall be installedonexistingterraceofthebuilding. 11 The individual inverter shall be installed in the control room/open spaceprovidedintherespectivebuildingoradjacentbuilding. 12 The individual DC and AC distribution boxes, DC and AC cabling, energy meters and data acquisition system shall be installed in the control room/open space provided in the respective building or adjacentbuilding.

PVArray 1. ThepeakpowerratingoftheSolarPVarrayunderStandardTemperature Conditions(STC)shallbeequaltothepeakpowerratingoftheindividual plant. 2. ThePVarrayshallconsistofframedmonocrystallineormulticrystalline, orboth(butforonebuildingonlyonetypeofmodulescanbeutilized). 3. IndividualPVmodulesratingshouldbeofminimum240wattpeakatSTC for multicrystalline PV modules (60 cell configuration) and minimum 250 watt peak at STC for monocrystalline PV modules (60 cell configuration). 4. The rated maximum power rating of PV modules should have positive tolerance in range of 0 to +3%. And negative temperature coefficient of powerforPVmodulesshouldbelessthanorequalto0.45%perdeg.C 5. A suitable number of Solar PV modules shall be connected in a series string.Asuitablenumberofseriesstringsshallbeconnectedinparallelto formulateaseriesparallelarray. 6. The PV strings and array shall be designed to match the inverter input specifications. 7. MaximumDCoutputvoltageofthearrayshallnotexceed600V. 8. Themoduleshallbeprovidedwithjunctionboxwithprovisionofmin.3 Nos. of bypass diodes and external MC4 type or equivalent plugin connectors. The junction box should have hinged, weatherproof lid with captivescrewsandcableglandentrypoints. 9. Thefrontsurfaceofthemoduleshallconsistofimpactresistant,lowiron andhightransmissiontoughenedglass. 10. The module frame shall be made of corrosion resistant material electricallycompatiblewiththestructuralmaterialusedformountingthe modules. 11. Each PV module manufactured in India must have RF identification tag (RFID)compatiblewithMNRErequirements.(Traceabilityrequirement) 12. DC negative conductor shall be bonded to the ground via Ground Fault Detector Interrupter (GFDI). The grounding point shall be as close as possibletothePVArray. Inverter 1. OnecentralinverterwithMPPTshallbeusedwitheachpowerplant. 2. The sine wave output of the inverter shall be suitable for connecting to 415V,3phaseACLTvoltagegrid. 3. Theinvertershallincorporatetransformerisolatedoutput(transformer less inverters shall be used with suitable external transformers), grid islanding protection, suitable DC/AC fuses/circuit breakers and voltage surgeprotection.FusesusedintheDCcircuitshallbeDCrated. 4. The inverter shall have internal protection against any sustained faults and/orlighteninginDCandmainsACgridcircuits. 5. The peak inverter efficiency inclusive of builtin isolation transformer shallexceed94%.(Typicalcommercialinverterefficiencynormallymore than97%,andtransformerefficiencyisnormallymorethan97%) 6. ThekVAratingsofinvertersforvariousPVsystemsshouldbechosenas perthePVsystemwattage.

7. ThenominalACvoltagetrackingrangeshallbe+10%,20%. 8. ThenominalACfrequencytrackingrangeshallbe+/3Hz. 9. The output power factor should be of suitable range to supply or sink reactivepower. 10. InvertershallprovidedisplayofPVarrayDCvoltage,currentandpower, ACoutputvoltageandcurrent(All3phasesandlines),ACpower(Active, Reactive and Apparent), Power Factor and AC energy (All 3 phases and cumulative) and frequency. Remote monitoring of inverter parameters shouldbepossible. 11. The inverter shall include adequate internal cooling arrangements (exhaustfanandducting)foroperationinanonACenvironment. 12. Max.permissibleDCinputvoltageshallbemin.700V. 13. THDshouldbelessthan4%. Earthing 1. PVarray,DCequipment,Inverter,ACequipmentanddistributionwiring shallbeearthedasrequired. 2. Equipment grounding (Earthing) shall connect all noncurrent carrying metalreceptacles,electricalboxes,applianceframes,chassisandPVpanel mounting structures in one long run. The grounding wire should not be switched,fusedorinterrupted. 3. The complete earthing system shall be electrically connected to provide return to earth from all equipment independent of mechanical connection. 4. The equipment grounding wire shall be connected to one grounding electrodeperPVpowerplant. 5. A separate grounding electrode shall be installed using earth pit per powerplant.Testpointshallbeprovidedforeachearthpit. 6. Anearthbusandatestpointshallbeprovidedinsideeachcontrolroom. 7. Earthingsystemdesignshouldbeasperthestandardpractices. BalanceofSystems(BoS) 1. String/ArraycombinerboxesshallincorporateDCstringcircuitbreakers, DC array disconnect switch, lightening and over voltage protectors, any other protection equipment, screw type terminal strips and strainrelief cableglands. 2. All DC and AC cables shall be terminated using suitable crimped cable lugs/sockets and screw type terminal strips. No soldered cable terminationshallbeaccepted. 3. Only terminal cable joints shall be accepted. No cable joint to join two cableendsshallbeaccepted. 4. Suitable Ground FaultDetector Interrupter (GFDI) shall be incorporated eitherwiththeinverterorwiththearraycombinerbox. 5. String/Array combiner boxes shall be secured onto walls or metal structureserectedseparatelyontheterrace. 6. Conduits/concealedcabletraysshallbeprovidedforallDCcablingonthe terrace.Conduits/concealedcabletraysshallbeadequatelysecuredonto theterrace.

7. The DC and AC cable type shall be PVC/XLPE insulated, suitably armoured, 1100V grade multistranded copper conductor. Appropriate colourcodingshallbeused. 8. The DC and AC cables of adequate electrical voltage and current ratings shallbealsoratedforinconduitwetandoutdooruse. 9. ThetotalDCcablelossesshallbemaximumof2%oftheplantratedDC capacityoverthespecifiedambienttemperaturerange. 10. The DC and AC cable size shall be selected to maintain losses within specifiedlimitsovertheentirelengthsofthecables. 11. DCcablesfromarraycombinerboxontheterracetoDCdistributionbox in the control room shall be laid inside cable duct where available or securedwithconduits/concealedcabletrayswhereductisnotavailable. 12. The DC and AC distribution boxes shall be wall mounted inside control room/openspace. 13. DC distribution box shall incorporate DC disconnect switch, lightening surge protectors, any other protection equipment, screw type terminal stripsandstrainreliefcableglands. 14. AC distribution box shall incorporate AC circuit breaker, surge voltage protectors, any other protection equipment, plant energy meter, screw typeterminalstripsandstrainreliefcableglands. 15. DC and AC cabling between inverter and distribution boxes shall be securedwithconduits/concealedcabletrays. 16. ThetotalACcablelossesshallbemaximumof1%oftheplantACoutput overthespecifiedambienttemperaturerange. 17. AllcableconduitsshallbeGI/HDPEtype. 18. AllcabletraysshallbepowdercoatedsteelorGIorequivalent. Civil 1. ExistingterracespaceshallbeusedtoinstallSolarPVarray. 2. PVarrayshallbeinstalledintheterracespacefreefromanyobstruction and/orshadow. 3. PV array shall be installed utilizing maximum terrace space to minimize effectsofshadowsduetoadjacentPVpanelrows. 4. Adequatespacingshallbeprovidedbetweentwopanelframesandrows of panels to facilitate personnel protection, ease of installation, replacement,cleaningofpanelsandelectricalmaintenance. 5. PVarrayshallbeorientedinthesouthdirectionatatiltangleof19deg.in ordertomaximizeannualenergyyieldoftheplant. 6. PVpanelframesshallbefixedandgroutedtoRCCblocks,whichinturn shall be secured to terrace structure in a seamless manner with no impact on waterproofing of the existing terrace structure. Additional waterproofing shall be provided in the areas where RCC blocks are securedontotheterrace. 7. AmpleclearanceshallbeprovidedinthelayoutoftheinverterandDC/AC distributionboxesforadequatecoolingandeaseofmaintenance. Mechanical 1. EachPVpanelshallconsistofmaximumof6PVmodules.Referdiagram mechanicalarrangementofPVpanel.

2. The min. clearance between lower edge of PV panel and terrace ground level shall be 1m. (to allow ventilation for cooling, also ease of cleaning andmaintenanceofpanelsaswellascleaningofterrace) 3. The height of each PV panel structure shall not exceed 3m above the terracegroundlevel. 4. ThePVarraystructuredesignshallbeappropriatewithafactorofsafety ofmin.1.5. 5. Each PV panel structure shall incorporate one bird repellant spike at a levelhigherthan thepanel upper edge.Thelocationofthespikeshould beselectedforminimumshadoweffect. 6. ArraysupportstructureshallbefabricatedusingcorrosionresistantGIor anodizedaluminumorequivalentmetalsections. 7. Array support structure welded joints and fasteners shall be adequately treatedtoresistcorrosion. 8. Thesupportstructureshallbefreefromcorrosionwheninstalled. 9. PV modules shall be secured to support structure using screw fasteners and/or metal clamps. Screw fasteners shall use existing mounting holes providedbymodulemanufacturer.Noadditionalholesshallbedrilledon module frames. Module fasteners/clamps shall be adequately treated to resistcorrosion. 10. Thesupportstructureshallwithstandwindloadingofupto150km/hr. 11. Adequatespacingshallbeprovidedbetweenanytwomodulessecuredon PVpanelforimprovedwindresistance. 12. The structure shall be designed to withstand operating environmental conditionsforaperiodofminimum25years. 13. Thesupportstructuredesignforeachbuildingwillrequireapprovalfrom IITBbeforeinstallationofstructureandPVmodules. 14. It is required to design the grid structure (on which PV module will be installed)insuchawaythatallloadistransferredtotheexistingcolumns ofthebuildings.SuchgriddesignshouldbepresentedtoIITB,whichare certified by qualified BMC approved structural engineers. Available drawingofthebuildingwillbeprovidedtotheagencyonrequest. 15. The grid structure should be installed in a manner to leave sufficient spaceforrepairandmaintenanceaspectsoftherooftops,particularlyfor leakages. 16. Thetotalloadofthestructure(wheninstalledwithPVmodules)onthe terraceshouldbelessthan60kg/m2,BMCapprovedstructuralengineers shouldcertifyafterthebuildinginspectionthatthebuildingsonwhichPV plantistobeinstalledisabletotakesuchloads. 17. Installation of grid structure for solar PV mounting should not tamper withthewaterproofingofroofs. Electrical 1. 22kVACHighTension(HT)MAINScomingfromTataPowerisconnected to 11 substations in a ring main configuration. Each substation distributiontransformergenerates415V,3phaseACLTvoltagesupplied toindividualbuildingsallocatedtotheLTdistributiongridcircuitofthe substation.ThereisprovisiontoconnectLTdistributiongridcircuitsina

ring configuration. Available drawing of the distribution circuit will be providedtotheagencyonrequest. LT distribution grid specifications 415V +/5%, 50Hz and frequency variationasperIErules. Theoutputoftheinvertershallbetransformerisolatedandshallbefed into 415V, 3 phase AC LT grid supplied to individual building via AC distributionbox. The inverter output shall be connected to LT line prior to the LT/DG changeover switch. The mandatory islanding protection provided by invertershallisolatetheinverterfromtheLTlineintheeventLTmains supply is not available. The Diesel Generator (DG) operation shall be completely independent of the Solar PV power plant. Refer LT DistributionGridSupplySchematicDiagram. The time of day (TOD) 3 phase, digital AC load energy meter shall be installed in the Main Distribution Box to monitor energy drawn by buildingload. Thetimeofday(TOD)3phase,digitalACenergymetershallbeinstalled intheACdistributionboxtomonitorenergygeneratedbySolarPVpower plant. Theloadenergymeteroperationshallbecompletelyindependentofthe plantACenergymeter. The energy meters shall be provided with communication interface and necessarydatacables.

DataAcquisitionSystem 1. DataAcquisitionSystemshallbeprovidedforeachsolarPVplant. 2. Computerized DC String/Array monitoring and AC output monitoring shall be provided as part of the inverter and/or string/array combiner boxorseparately. 3. String and array DC Voltage, Current and Power, Inverter AC output voltageand current (All 3 phasesand lines),AC power (Active, Reactive and Apparent), Power Factor and AC energy (All 3 phases and cumulative)andfrequencyshallbemonitored. 4. The time interval between two sets of data shall not be more than 3 minutes.(Amin.of20samplesofdatashallberecordedperhour) 5. Data Acquisition System shall have real time clock, internal reliable batterybackupanddatastoragecapacitytorecorddataroundtheclock foraperiodofmin.1year. 6. ComputerizedACenergymonitoringshallbeinadditiontothedigitalAC energymeter. 7. Thedatashallberecordedinacommonworksheetchronologicallydate wise. The data file shall be MS Excel compatible. Software for centralized Internet monitoring system shall be also provided for download and analysis of cumulative data of all the plants andthedataofthesolarradiationandenvironmentmonitoringsystem. SolarRadiationandEnvironmentMonitoringSystem 1. Computerized solar radiation and environment monitoring system shall be installed on one of the buildings along with the each solar PV power plant. 2. The system shall consist of various sensors, signal conditioning, data acquisition,LCDdisplayandremotemonitoring. 3. Globalanddiffusebeamsolarradiationintheplaneofarray(POA)shall bemonitoredoncontinuousbasis. 4. AmbienttemperatureandrelativehumiditynearPVarray,controlroom temperature, wind speed and wind direction at the level of array plane shallbemonitoredoncontinuousbasis. 5. Solar PV module back surface temperature shall be also monitored on continuousbasis. 6. SimultaneousmonitoringofDCandACelectricalvoltage,current,power, energy and other data of the plant for corelation with solar and environmentdatashallbeprovided. 7.
