Goals
Problemstatement:

Themodelconsistsofaworkbencharchivefilerepresentingavalveandpiston
assemblywithloadsapplied(seefigureonleft). Asthefigureontherightshows,agapexistsbetweenthepistonandbore(0.39mm). Ourgoalisto: Solvethemodelasiswithnointerfacetreatment(resultswillbenonphysical). Solvethemodelasecondtimeusinganappropriateinitialcontactoffsettoclosethe gap.

BeginanewWorkbenchsessionand,fromtheProject page,chooseRestoreArchive...andbrowsetothe fileWS9_Contact_Interface.wbpzandOpen(location providedbyinstructor). Whenprompted,Saveusingthedefaultnameandthe samelocation.

FromtheUnitsmenuverify:

ProjectunitsaresettoMetric(kg,mm,s,C,mA,N,mV). DisplayValuesinProjectUnitsischecked(on).

4. Checkthecurrentcontactsettings:

Noticethecontacttypeisfrictionlessandthatno offsethasbeenspecifiedintheformofaninterface treatment. Allothersettingsareleftasdefault.

Recallthata0.39mmgapexistsbetweenthepiston andvalve.Withtheboundaryconditionsasset,we shouldexpectthepistontobeinitiallyfreeasthe forceisapplied.

Whenthesolutioncompletesamessageshouldindicatepossible rigidbodymotionhasoccurred. Aquickcheckofthemagnitudeoftotaldeformationshould confirmthemessage. Amagnifieddeformationshowsthe2partshaveseparatedas expected.

Conclusions
Notes: Theinitialsolutionverifiedthatrigidbodymotionwasoccurringwhenwe triedtoapplyaforcetopartswhichwereseparatedbyaninitialgap. Wewereabletodeterminethegapsizeusing2differentmethodsinorderto determinehowtoaddressthecontactproblem. Withthegapsizeverified,weinputaninitialoffsetatthecontact,effectively closingthegap.
