PARTS OF A VEGETABLE PLANT LESSON PLAN Introduction:! - Introduce yourself: Name, Rutgers student, etc.

- Topic: Different Parts of a Vegetable - Ask children to name some of their favorite vegetables - Ask children if they have ever planted a vegetable before - Ask children if they know the different parts of a vegetable plant (flower, stem, root, seeds, leaves, fruit, tuber) Body: - Have children name and describe their favorite vegetable by its shape, color, and texture - Tell children we eat different parts of a vegetable plant (flower, stem, root, seeds, leaves, fruit, tuber) - Teach children how to correctly identify where each vegetable grows from on the vegetable plant o Use vegetable plant diagram o Botanical Definitions ! Root: The (normally underground) part of the plant specialized for anchorage, absorption and sometimes food storage. ! Stem: The (normally above ground) part of the plant that bears the reproductive parts, leaves and buds. ! Leaf: The main photosynthetic organ (food factory) of most green plants, made up of a sideways outgrowth from a stem. ! Flower: The reproductive part of the flowering plants. It consists of stamens (that produce pollen containing the male sex cells) and carpels that contain the eggs (called ova the female sex cells) plus petals and sepals. ! Fruit: The structure that develops from the ovary wall as the seeds develop inside. ! Seed: The structure that develops from the fertilized egg in seed plants, usually containing one embryo plus a food supply. The seed contains all the components needed for a new plant to grow. ! Tuber: A much thickened underground part of a stem or rhizome - Follow up with a vegetable plant matching game o Each child will be given a picture of a vegetable and will stick the vegetable picture on the plant diagram displayed on the whiteboard. The children will place the vegetable picture on the part of the vegetable plant they think the vegetable grows from (roots, stems, flowers, seeds or leaves) - End with a fun Vegetable Bingo Game: (PRINT OUT BINGO CARDS) o Ask children questions regarding the shape, color, and part of the vegetable plant the vegetable grows from o For example: Who has an orange crunchy root? The answer is: a carrot o Bingo Questions:
