Having been licensed and ordained at the historic Sixth Avenue Baptist Church of Birmingham, Alabama, he served for six years as the Youth Pastor and four years as the Assistant Pastor of the historic Abyssinian Baptist Church of New York City, led by the likes of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and their challenges to the church and the world in their time and ours. His primary research, however, is focused in the area of investigating black religion and spirituality and interpreting the theological meaning and historical mission of the black church. A 1993 recipient of Union Theological Seminarys coveted William H. Hudnut Preaching Award, The Rev. Dr. Warnock is sought after as a preacher and scholar. From The Pastor

As many of you know, Trinity UCC has been deepening our outreach in Benton Harbor, MI for a number of years, and in fact, have a church building there. In the note below, Rev. Pickney, a long-time resident and activist in Benton Harbor, gives an overview of what is keeping the community in such despair and poverty, as the city sides with big business against the interests of the underserved. Mayor James Hightower of Benton Harbor, Michigan says the Whirlpool Corporation should not pay taxes only the residents of the city of Benton Harbor should foot the bills. Whirlpool Corporations profit last year was more than ten billion dollars, and it paid no taxes to the city of Benton Harbor where the headquarters resides. Mayor James Hightower and the Whirlpool Corporation fought extremely hard to defeat the city income tax which would have provided $3.5 million dollars the very first year and every year after. Residents and those who work in the city would pay the income tax. Corporations would, too. Mayor Hightower wanted a debt consolidation loan. He said the loan would not add to the debt, but eliminate it. How stupid does the mayor and Whirlpool Corporation believe the residents of Benton Harbor are? Commissioner Marcus Muhammad, who supports the residents and fights for all of us, said he remains unconvinced that the loan is a good idea. Commissioner Muhammad remarked, You cannot cut your way out of debt, or borrow your way out of debt. These are just two basic principle of finance. Commissioner Bowen said, Without the loan the city will still pay off its debt, it will just take longer. I dont see whats the rush. The commissioners question why Mayor Hightower didnt mention the need for a loan in his State of the City address on October 15, 2013, before the November 5, 2013 election, when the city income tax was defeated. It would have provided $3.5 million every year. There would be no need for a loan. He said the city was in the black, and now he wanted to take out a $2.3 million dollar loan (on the backs of the people.) If the people had known about the loan, they would have approved the city income tax, which called for residents and businesses to pay a 1% income tax and non-residents a 0.5% city income tax. Non-residents are over 90% of the people who work inside Benton Harbor. Hightower is being recalled for voting no on the city income tax. Because of him, the residents are forced to take out a loan for $2.3 million dollars. We must remove the Mayor from office. FROM THE PASTOR

Update on Current Violence in South Sudan

This past Sunday, Juba, the capital of the worlds newest nation, South Sudan, came under a disturbing gunfight between internal members of the presidential guard. Reported to have been a misunderstanding between the soldiers, the fight, unfortunately, took an entirely different dimension. It immediately turned political, with soldiers loyal to President Kiir taking arms against soldiers loyal to the former Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar. The slayings continue, with over 1,000 killed and hundreds of thousands displaced. Disparagingly, the violence is quickly spreading nationwide. The ubiquitous reports of innocent children, women, and civilians being killed or hurt, and the potential for the violence to ignite long-standing tribal animosities are deeply concerning. Moreover, the ongoing political wrangling among South Sudanese politicians incites grave hostilities, necessitating an immediate citizenry response. Since this ethnic conflict began, violence has spread to 3 of South Sudans 10 states: Jonglei, Upper Nile, and Unity State. We fear that this conflict may return the country to civil war, with dire humanitarian consequences. We write this statement in effort to inform all South Sudanese Americans and friends of South Sudan asking your help to stop the violence in our country. We also urge IGAD, AU, US, EU, and UN to call upon South Sudanese leaders to immediately engage in peaceful dialogue with a focused effort in resolving these political differences and bringing stability back to our country without any preconditions. Respectfully submitted, A. Ting Mayai, Madison, Wisconsin Peter Magai Bul, Chicago, Illinois

Loving God, Living Green, Liberating All

LOVING GOD
January Deuteronomy 6:5 (NIV)
Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.

2014 Trinity UCC Theme

July Job 38:4-7 (NIV)

February Psalm 119:105-106 (NIV)

Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path. I have taken an oath and confirmed it, that I will follow your righteous laws.

Where were you when I laid the earths foundations? Tell me if you understand. Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it? On what were its footings set or who laid its cornerstone while the morning stars sang together for joy!

August Deuteronomy 24:19 (NIV)

March John 15:10 (NIV)

If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Fathers commands and remain in his love.

When you are harvesting in your field and you overlook a sheaf, do not go back to get it. Leave it for the foreigner, the fatherless and the widow, so that the Lord your God may bless you in all the work of your hands.

April Romans 14:19 (NIV)

LIBERATING ALL
September Galatians 5:1 (NIV)
It is for freedom that Christ set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.

Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification.

LIVING GREEN
May Psalm 24:1 (NIV)
The earth is the Lords and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.

October Galatians 5:13 (NIV)

You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in Love.

June Genesis 1:29-30 (NIV)

Then God said, I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the groundeverything that has the breath of life in itI give every green plant for food. And it was so.

November Galatians 3:28 (NIV)

There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

December Luke 4:18-19 (NIV)

The spirit of the Lord is on me, because he anointed me to preach good news to the poor, he has sent me to proclaim freedom for the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the favorable year of the Lord.

Join Trinity United Church of Christ and The DuSable Museum of African American History during Black History Month, as we Commemorate

The Journey of Remembrance begins Sunday, February 2nd, and continues each Sunday through February 23rd (all worship services: 7:30 a.m., 11:00 a.m., and 6:00 p.m.), as we
travel from the shores of Ghana to the slave plantations of the Caribbean, to the slave ports of New Orleans, concluding with the great migration north to Chicago. We will be immersed in the spiritual, cultural, and historical perspectives of our ancestors.

MAAFA

And, for the first time, the DuSable Museum will partner with us in this journey, as each Wednesday, at 6:30 p.m., they will present programs that deepen our historical understanding. Mark your calendars, as the Black History Month Maafa Commemorations at Trinity UCC and the DuSable Museum connect you to your history as never before! Special guests currently scheduled:
