Energy efficiency measurement

for household appliances within

the frame of the EU-Energy label
Energy is a valuable and limited commodity. If you use it efficiently you will not
only save money, but also contribute to the protection of the climate.
The VDE is the expert in supporting and monitoring the energy efficiency tech-
nologies, the standardization of product and testing requirements, the compe-
tent testing and evaluation of electro technical products as well as specific
assessment services within the frame of
environmental and energy audits.
The VDE Institute is equipped with modern
testing systems especially for examinations for
the EU-Energy label and has been a respected
partner in this field for many years on account
of its high competency.
The European Union has established guide-
lines with the aim of reducing the energy
consumption of electrical household appli-
ances and thus contributing to the protection
of the climate. The keeping of these guide-
lines is mandatory for the manufacturer. The
legally required consumer information is
done in the form of an energy label. The

the baking volume of baking ovens are documented on the energy label.
Moreover the energy label contains substantial information about usability, as for
example volume, capacity, washing or tumbling effect in reference to the differ-
ent product categories. EC directives and European standards form the basis for
the tests. In addition to the manufacturers the independent VDE Testing and
Certification Institute is highly engaged in the performance of energy efficiency
measurements and reviewing the label information. On account that the methods
for obtaining the data are highly sensitive the VDE Institute applies very high stan-
dards for the testing equipment, support tools and personal.
The VDE Institute performs tests for energy labelling of washing machines, tum-
ble dryers, dishwashers, refrigerators and freezers as well as measurements for
energy consumption of ovens. The VDE Institute has access to fully automated
testing systems and has installed a modern water purification system.
