El Salvador has made progress in improving health outcomes but still faces challenges. The under-5 mortality rate has declined significantly from 1990 to 2010, however pneumonia, prematurity, and neonatal sepsis remain leading causes of death among children under 5. Noncommunicable diseases have also increased and now account for nearly 60% of deaths. While access to improved water and sanitation sources has expanded greatly, health risks like obesity and tobacco use continue to be issues.
