The evolution of Chinas 1 child policy


1950-59 Government encouraged high BR a large population gives a strong nation. Famine in1959 killed 20 million! 1960-73 After the famine a population boom occurred. 1974-79 Wan-xi-shao policy introduced. It means Later, Longer, Fewer. Later marriages, longer gaps between children, fewer children! 1979 onwards 1 child policy introduced

There are some myths about Chinas 1 child policy it doesn't apply to everyone!
Its misnamed it is actually a 1 birth policy. In Urban areas you are allowed a second child if both parents are single children Many rural couples are able to have two children if the first one is a girl. Ethnic minorities are not included in the policy.
