Contraindications/warnings/interactions
For Edema . Hypersensitivity; Hepatic coma or anuria; Some liquid products may
contain alcohol, avoid in patients with alcohol intolerance. Geriatric-
Mechanism of action and indications: may cause increased risk of side effects, especially hypotension and
electrolyte imbalance, at usual doses.
Inhibits the reabsorption of sodium and Common side effects:
chloride from the loop of Henle and distal F and E:Dehydration, hypokalemia, hypochloremia,
renal tubule. hypomagnesemia, hyponatremia, hypovolemia, metabolic alkalosis.
Increases renal excretion of water, CNS:Blurred vision, dizziness, headache, vertigo.
sodium, chloride, magnesium, potassium, EENT:Hearing loss, tinnitus.
and calcium. CV:Decreased blood pressure, hypotension.
Effectiveness persists in impaired renal GI:Anorexia, constipation/diarrhea, dry mouth, dyspepsia,

-Common decrease of serum potassium
-May decrease sodium, calcium, magnesium concentrations
Nsaids decrease the effect of this drug -May increase BUN, serum glucose, creatinine, and uric acid levels.
Be sure to teach the patient the following about this medication:
-take as directed
-change position slowly ( minimized orthostatic hypotension)
-consult physician if on a high potassium diet
-notify if a weight gain of 3lbs in one day.
-consult physician if taking OTC
-instruct pt. to notify of medication regimen before treatment or
surgery.
- advise to use sunscreen or protective clothing
-contact PCP if muscle weakness, cramps, nausea, dizziness,
numbness, or tingling of extremities occurs.
-emphasize the importance of routine follow-up examinations.
