National fly-fishing organization for breast cancer survivors enhances board with top-level leaders
Casting for Recovery appoints board members with world-class experience in medicine and management
Manchester, VTDecember 8, 2013Casting for Recovery, a non-profit organization offering support and educational retreats for women with breast cancer is thrilled to announce the addition of three influential leaders to its Board of Trustees; Patricia Shands, M.D., Mary Turney and Patti Sadowski. Patricia Shands, M.D. is a Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon with a medical degree from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. Dr. Shands completed her residency in Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Kansas Health Sciences Center followed by a fellowship in Sports Medicine/Arthroscopy at Orthopedic Research of Virginia. She was in private practice in Bellevue, Washington for ten years before accepting a position at the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium where she served as Chairman of the Orthopedic Department in Anchorage, Alaska for six years. She currently travels throughout rural Alaska providing orthopedic care to the Alaska Native population. In her spare time she enjoys snowboarding, skate skiing, backpacking, mountain biking, fly fishing, ice hockey, piano, drums and photography. Mary Turney is a former executive in the telecommunications industry and has a proven track record leading diverse organizations as well as establishing strategic partnership with clients, vendors and service providers. Marys background includes project management, financial, business and organizational strategy. In 2005, Mary retired as President of Telcordia Technologies in Piscataway, New Jersey. She has a degree in English and an advanced degree in management. She and her husband launched the Wyoming Casting for Recovery program in 2011, and Mary continues to serve as the CfR Wyoming Program Coordinator. She and her husband split their time between Lake Hartwell in Fair Play, South Carolina and Dubois, Wyoming. Patti Sadowski is Executive Director of Nursingale for the Medically Fragile, a non-profit provider of home-based skilled pediatric nursing care for medically fragile children and young adults in Oregon. Patti has multiple advanced degrees in nursing and business. She has deep roots in the cancer community since launching Cancer Blankets in 2008a movement to offer families and friends resources to help support loved ones in cancer treatment. Casting for Recovery Executive Director Whitney Milhoan says, We are eager to have these three amazing women join Casting for Recoverys Board of Trustees. Their knowledge and experience will help guide the organizations direction and strengthen our ability to fulfill our mission. Casting for Recovery (CfR) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit created to enhance the quality of life of women with breast cancer by providing free retreats to promote and support mental and physical healing. Casting for Recovery's program combines counseling, medical information, and the therapeutic sport of fly-fishing. Retreats are offered at no cost to women at any age and any stage of breast cancer treatment and recovery.
