Pre-approved Absences
In the event that you anticipate your child will be out of school for an extended period of time, such as for a trip, it is important that a parent comes to our office and completes a Planned Absence form. School attendance is SO important. We appreciate that parents make every attempt to schedule appointments and vacations around school times.
Being on time
All schools have their own way of doing things. At Sugar Creek, it is VERY important that all students are in class by 7:45. The announcements start within seconds of our 7:45 bell, and that is the exact instant our teachers take attendance. Not being in the room at that time will not only result in your child receiving a tardy but also interferes with classroom routines.
Allows children time to be themselves with their classmates, relax, and prepare themselves for a day of learning
at Sugar Creek. Gives children the chance to practice their own empathy and care for their classmates as they help each other and talk with each other. Allows teachers to direct their focus on getting students ready for their day. We thank you for all you do, as parents. You know your children best in regards to this. They are lucky to have your support and care through this important stage of their lives. Thank you.
Label Clothing
Please label ALL items you send to school with your children (sweatshirts, jackets, gloves, etc.) Each year we donate many, many bags full of perfectly good but unclaimed articles of clothing. Our buildings Lost and Founds bins are located in the following three spots: Near the gym, near the teachers lounge, and at the New Century Office.
Nursing notes
Lice: our district policy is to notify families of students after the second reported case in a classroom, though a lot of times a note goes home after the first case. Serious illnesses: we do notify classroom families when some illnesses occur in a classroom (strep, ring worm, etc.) but please keep in mind we do not always have this information. We do ask that parents let us know, so we can help keep others safe and healthy.
School Closings
Announcements about the closing or delay of school due to inclement weather or other emergencies will be posted on the VASD website: www.verona.k12.wi.us. In addition, various local radio and TV stations announce school closings and delays. Unless such an announcement is made, school will begin at the usual time.
The Truancy Review Board (TRB) meets monthly to assess family situations related to students absence from school. The TRB is composed of school officials, a community social worker, and law enforcement officers, along with a parent(s)/guardian(s) of the student. The TRB will request the parent (and possibly student) sign a contract regarding an attendance plan. The TRB may also determine that the case needs further intervention and refer to the municipal court and/or refer to Dane County Human Services. Appointments If your child is absent from school due to a medical reason please request a doctor written excuse on clinic letterhead that the child was seen on the specific date. The following types of providers are examples in this category:
Medical doctor Dentist Orthodontist Chiropractor Physical/Occupational Therapist Mental Health Provider
Extracurricular Activities (not school sponsored) If your child is involved in club sports or other community activities, be aware of scheduling. We encourage you to work with the program scheduler such that these activities will not interfere with your childs school attendance. Vacation: It is a parental choice to take a vacation. We strongly urge parents to take family vacations concurrent with school breaks such as winter break, spring break, and summer break. If you choose to take vacation days while school is in session, keep in mind that parents can only excuse up to ten days total per school year. Absences (including tardiness) in excess of ten days may be considered truant. Absent/Tardy for ANY reason: Call the school attendance line (available 24 hours) OR Send a note with your child if he/she is absent for any reason.
If you have questions regarding the attendance policy and procedures please contact your school administrator or social worker.
Llegar a Tiempo/Puntualidad
