How are these different from each other? Distinguish between structure and a machine. Explain completely, partially and incompletely constrained motion of a kinematic pair with examples. [4+4+8] Explain Scott Russell mechanism through a neat sketch. Show that it generates a straight-line motion. What are the limitations of Scott Russell mechanism? [12+4] A crank and rocker mechanism ABCD has the following dimensions: AB =0.75m, BC =1.25 m, CD =1 m, AD =1.5 m and CF = 500 mm. AD is the fixed link. F lies on BC produced. Crank AB has an angular velocity of 30 rad/s counter clock-wise and a deceleration of 200 rad/s2 at the instant angle DAB= 300. Find a) The instantaneous linear acceleration of C and F b) The instantaneous angular velocities and accelerations of links BC and CD. [16] What is a Hookes joint ? What are its applications? Determine the maximum permissible angle between the shaft axes of a universal joint if the driving shaft rotates at 600 rpm and the total fluctuation of speed does not exceed 60 rpm. Also find the maximum and minimum speeds of the driven shaft. In a double universal coupling joining two shafts, the intermediate shaft is inclined at 100 to each. The input and the output forks on the intermediate shaft have been assembled inadvertently at 900 to one another. Determine the maximum and the least velocities of the output shaft if the speed of the input shaft is 500rpm. Also find the coefficient of fluctuation in speed. [5+6+5] Discuss terminology used in cams. A flat faced reciprocating follower has the following motion with uniform acceleration and retardation. Ascent for 800, dwell for 800, and return for 1200. The base circle diameter of the cam is 60mm and the stroke of the follower is 20mm, the line of motion of the follower passes through the axis of the cam. Draw the cam profile. [16] Describe various types of gears used to connect intersecting shafts. The number of teeth on the gear and the pinion of two spur gears in mesh are 30 and 18 respectively. Both the gears have a module of 6mm and pressure angle of 200. If the pinion rotates at 400rpm, what will be the sliding velocity at the moment the tip of the tooth of pinion has contact with the gear flank? Take addendum equal to one module. Also, find the maximum velocity of sliding. [16]

Classify the belt drives. Two parallel shafts, connected by a crossed-belt, are provided with pulleys 480mm and 640mm in diameters. The distance between the centre lines of the shafts is 3m. Find by how much the length of the belt should be changed if it is desired to alter the direction of rotation of the driven shaft. [16] Classify gear trains. In a reduction gear shown in figure, the input S has 24 teeth; P and C constitute a compound planet having 30 and 18 teeth respectively. If all the gears are of the same pitch, find the speed ratio of the reduction gear. Assume A to be fixed. [16]

Find the maximum Kinetic energy of the intermediate piece of mass 5 kg when the shafts revolve at 300rpm. [10+6] Explain Watt mechanism and prove that it generates a straight-line motion. Why Watt mechanism is so commonly used to generate an approximate straight line motion? [12+4] What is Coriolis component of acceleration? How is it determined? Explain the procedure to determine the velocity and acceleration of a slider crank mechanism by Kleins construction. [6+10] What is a double Hookes joint? State the conditions to be satisfied in a double Hookes joint in order to provide a uniform velocity ratio through out a revolution. The angle between the axes of two shafts connected by a Hookes joint is 22.5 degrees. The power supplied to the driving shaft is 7.5 KW at a uniform speed of 300 rpm. If the output torque on the driven shaft is not to vary by more than 15 percent of the input torque, what is the necessary moment of inertia of the fly wheel? [6+10] With the help of neat sketches explain the types of cams and followers. Draw the profile of a cam operating a knife-edge follower having a lift of 30mm. The cam raises the follower with SHM for 1500 of the rotation followed by a period of dwell for 600. The follower descends for the next 1000 rotation of the cam with uniform velocity, again followed by a dwell period. The cam rotates at a uniform velocity of 120rpm and has a least radius of 20mm. What will be the maximum velocity and acceleration of the follower during the lift and the return? [16]

Describe various types of gears used for connecting parallel shafts? The velocity ratio of two spur gears in mesh is 0.4 and the centre distance 75mm. For a module of 1.2mm, find the number of teeth of the gears. What will be the pitch line velocity if the pinion speed is 800 rpm? Also find the speed of the gear wheel. [16] Two parallel shafts 5m apart are connected by open flat belt drive. The diameter of the bigger pulley is 1.5m and that of the smaller pulley 0.75m. The initial tension in the belt is 2.5 kN. The mass of the belt is 1.25 kg/m length and coefficient of friction is 0.25. Taking centrifugal tension into account, find the power transmitted, when the smaller pulley rotates at 450rpm. [16]

An epicyclic gear in figure consists of two sun wheels, S1 and S2 with 24 and 26 teeth respectively, engaged with a compound planet wheel with 26 and 29 teeth. S1 is keyed to the driving shaft which is co-axial with the driven shaft. Find the velocity ratio of the gear. If 7.5kW is transmitted at the input speed of 1000 rpm what torque is required to hold S2? [16]

What are the relative merits and demerits of the Ackermann type of steering gear over that of Davis type? Two shafts are to be connected by a Hookes joint. The driving shaft rotates at a uniform speed of 500rpm and the speed of the driven shaft must lie between 475 and 525 rpm. Determine the maximum permissible angle between the shafts. Draw a figure of a radial cam with reciprocating roller follower and represent the nomenclature of cam. The following particulars relate to a symmetrical tangent cam having a roller follower. Minimum radius of the cam = 40mm, Lift = 20mm, Speed = 360 rpm, Roller diameter = 44mm, Angle of ascent = 600. Calculate the acceleration of follower at the beginning of lift. Also find its values when the roller just touches the nose and is at the apex of the circular nose. Sketch the variation of displacement, velocity and acceleration during ascent. [16]

Define a gear. Classify different types of gears. A pair of spur gears with involute teeth is to give a gear ratio of 3:1. The arc of approach is not to be less that the circular pitch and the pinion is the driver. The pressure angle is 200. What is the least number of teeth that can be used on each gear? [16] Determine the maximum power that can be transmitted through a flat belt having the following data: Cross section of the belt = 300mm x 12mm Ratio of belt tensions = 2.2 Maximum permissible tension in belt = 2N/mm2 Mass density of the belt material = 0.0011 g/mm3. [16] Explain about reverted train. An epicyclic gear train is shown in figure. The number of teeth on A and B are 80 and 200. Determine the speed of the arm a. i) If A rotates at 100rpm clockwise and B at 50 rpm counter-clockwise. ii) If A rotates at 100 rpm clockwise and B is stationary. [16]

What is a double Hookes joint? State the conditions to be satisfied in a double Hookes joint in order to provide a uniform velocity ratio throughout a revolution. Deduce the condition for the equal speeds of two shafts connected by a Hookes joint from the expression for the ratio of their angular velocities. Also deduce the expression for the angular acceleration of the driven shaft. With a neat sketch explain the construction and working of a Davis steering gear. [4+6+6]

What are various types of cams? Explain purpose of each type. A translating roller follower of 1 cm radius is driven by an eccentric circle cam of radius 3.5 cm and eccentricity 1.2 cm, rotating at 200 rpm. Plot the displacement, velocity and acceleration of the cam for one full cycle. Also determine the maximum pressure angle. [16] Define the following terms related to helical gears: helix angle, circular path, normal circular pitch. Two 200 involute spur gears having a velocity ratio of 2.5 mesh externally. Module is 4mm and the addendum is equal to 1.23 module. Pinion rotates at 150rpm. Find i) The minimum number of teeth on each wheel to avoid interference. ii) The number of pairs of teeth in contact. [16] Explain about types of materials used in belt drive. A 100mm wide and 10mm thick belt transmits 5kW between the shaft centres 1.5m and the diameter of the smaller pulley is 440mm. The driving and the driven shafts rotate at 60 rpm and 150rpm respectively. Find the stress in the belt if the two pulleys are connected by: i) An open belt, and ii) A cross belt. The coefficient of friction is 0.22. [16] What is gear train? What are its main types?
