Odd People Out (2004) 54 Manuel Zayas A fifty-four minute Documentary directed by Manuel Zayas that gives testimony to the process of marginalization, repression, and denial of homosexuals during the first two decades of the Cuban Revolution through the biography of writer Reinaldo Arenas. The frustration of the essential revolutionary freedom, the inherent machismo of a traditional society, the brutality of the mechanisms of power in Latin America, the systemic destruction of the work of an author as a technique of alienation, and the perversity of a demagogic regime form the plot lines of this tale of creative yet vital failure. This is the history of individuals systematically denied to the point of ceasing to exist, to the point of becoming non-persons. Filmed clandestinely in Cuba in 2003.
