Notes on the Interviewed Participants Participant 1: He took the interview very seriously and was truthful in his answers.

6s response)

o Question 10 Response: They could have more awareness about it Participant 2: He was serious about the interview and his answers on the subject. o African American o Christian o 17 o Straight; In a sexual relationship o Question 5 Response: There are too many (cases of teen pregnancy not only in
DHS but worldwide)

o Question 6 Response: Its one of the scariest things that could happen to us

o Question 7 Response: To help and supply her and the child with what they need o Question 8 Response: Freak out and go with whatever she wanted to do to
handle the situation

o Question 9 Response: Kids thinking they are more mature than they really are o Question 10 Response: Wrap it up; be smart, use any kind of birth control
possible, or just dont have sex

Participant 3: He was helpful by being honest with his answers and fully participating. o White o Not religious o 16 o Straight; In a sexual relationship o Question 5 Response: I dont like it (too common) o Question 6 Response: They try to avoid it o Question 7 Response: They should get a say whether to abort it or not. If they
choose to keep it then they should stay and do what they stayed for

o Question 8 Response: I would ask her to get an abortion (too young to handle
that type of situation and does not feel ready for something like that)

o Question 9 Response: Thinks that rape is also a major reason for teen pregnancy
today.

o Question 10 Response: Wear condoms, take birth control pills, things like that Participant 4: He did not take interview seriously and only gave a few quotable answers. o White o Religious but would not state affiliation

pregnancy are stupid.

o Question 6 Response: He replied with a witty remark on how a guy would be


negatively surprised.

every day is inevitable)

o Question 6 Response: Its something to avoid o Question 7 Response: They made that child and need to take care of it o Question 8 Response: Pray. Tell my parents, and if they kick me out, find a job
and an apartment

o Question 9: Poor choices and in extreme cases rape. Sometimes its even a fad

as the best and most effective prevention

the child

o Question 8 Response: I would urge the mother to explore other options such as
abortion or adoption

o Question 9 Response: Lack of education in the use of contraception o Question 10 Response: Practice safe sex Participant 7: He was serious about the subject and his answers. o White o Christian o 17 o Straight; Not in a sexual relationship o Question 5 Response: Teens who didnt take proper measures to prevent a
pregnancy

o Question 7 Response: They should have a huge responsibility (helping with


costs and watching the baby)

accept responsibility for the pregnancy)

o Question 9 Response: Careless actions in the heat of the moment o Question 10 Response: Take or wear contraceptives Participant 8: He was involved in the interview and was honest in his answers. o White o Not religious o 18 o Straight; Not in a sexual relationship o Question 5 Response: Teen Mom (how teen mom makes being pregnant as a
teen is okay)

o Question 6 Response: It wont happen to them o Question 7 Response: Provide for them (guys need to help pay and care for the
kid)

o Question 8 Response: Sell my extra stuff and work more o Question 9 Response: Lack of precautions (people dont plan out how to avoid
pregnancy)

contraceptives and knowledge is the key to preventing pregnancy)

Participant 9: He was very serious and wanted to give good answers. o White o Not religious o 18 o Straight; In a sexual relationship o Question 5 Response: He could not think of a response and when urged to say the
first thing he thought he requested to skip the question.

o Question 6 Response: They dont care because they are not the ones raising the
baby, the mother is

o Question 7 Response: I believe fathers should have equal responsibilities as


mothers

o Question 8 Response: I would be shocked and I would not be ready (both


mentally and financially)

o Question 9 Response: People are not cautious enough. They think it will never
happen to them

o Question 10 Response: Use protection Participant 10: He was mostly serious and gave okay answers. o White o Christian o 17 o Straight; In a sexual relationship o Question 5 Response: Babies are loud (negative aspects of babies) o Question 6 Response: They screwed up or its not theirs

o Question 7 Response: They should be the dad (includes all the things that are
associated with dads such as spending time with the kid)

o Question 8 Response: I would like to be its father because itd be my kid o Question 9 Response: YOLO (they dont think the consequences of anything
affects them)

o Question 10 Response: Not to be careless (those who are sexually active need
to do so with their eyes open)

Participant 11: He made an effort to be serious but didnt seem to find the subject serious. o White o Mormon (LDS) o 17 o Straight; Not in a sexual relationship o Question 5 Response: Drop outs, abortion, and adoption o Question 6 Response: I want no part in it or Wasnt me (he quoted these
phrases in a voice deeper than his usual pitch)

o Question 7 Response: None (he seemed under the impression that anyone in
such a situation did not have any set obligations)

o Question 8 Response: Wouldnt happen in the first place (refer to answer to


status of sexual relationship)

o Question 9 Response: Girls want attention so they get pregnant o Question 10 Response: Practice abstinence (very strong in his belief in no sex
before marriage)

Participant 12: He was not very serious about the interview and would not expand on his
answers.

mom

extra hours, and raise my child like normal

literal physical sense)

o Question 10 Response: Be abstinent Participant 16: He was very serious about his responses and helpful in explaining his
answers.

try so much harder to survive

virgin. Second, I would get a job.

and work full time.

o Question 9 Response: Some teens arent properly educated o Question 10 Response: Contraceptives He then elaborated by saying things like
condoms and birth control.
