(Metallurgy & Material Technology)
Time: 3 hours Max Marks: 80
Answer any FIVE Questions
All Questions carry equal marks
?????

1. (a) The probabilities that students A,B,C,D solve a problem are 1/3, 2/5, 1/5
and 1/4 respectively. If all of them try to solve the problem, what is the
probability that the problem is solved.
(b) In a volt factory machines A,B,C manufacture 20%, 30% and 50% of the total
of their output and 6%, 3% and 2% are defective. A bolt is drawn at random
and found to be defective. Find the probabilities that it is manufactured from
i. Machine A
ii. Machine B
iii. Machine C [8+8]

2. (a) Suppose a continuous random variable X has the probability density f(x)=k(1−
x2 ) for0 < x < 1, and f(x) = 0 otherwise. Find
i. k
ii. mean
iii. variance.
(b) Fit a binomial distribution to the following data:

X 0 1 2 3 4
f 30 62 46 10 2

[8+8]

3. (a) Prove that Poisson distribution is the limiting case of binomial distribution
for very large number of trials with very small probability.
(b) Assume that the reduction of a persons oxygen consumption during a period
of transcendental meditation ( TM) is a continuous random variable X with
mean 37.6 cc/mt and standard deviation 4.6 cc/mt. Determine the probability
that during a period of TM a persons oxygen consumption will be reduced by
i. at lest 44.5 cc/mt
ii. at most 35.0 cc/mt [8+8]

4. (a) A normal population has a mean of.1 and standard deviation of 2:1. Find the
probability that the mean of simple sample of 900 members will be negative.
(b) It is claimed that a random sample of 100 types with a mean life of 15269 is
drawn from a population of tyres which has a mean life of 15200 km and a
standard deviation of 1248km, test the validity of his claim. [8+8]

5. (a) A random sample of 400 flower stems has an average length of 15cms. Can
this be regarded as a sample from a large population with mean 16cms and
S.D 5cms.
(b) 20 people were attacked by a disease and only 18 survived will you reject the
hypothesis that the survival rate if attached by this disease is 85% in favour
of the hypothesis that is more at 5% level. [8+8]

6. The following is the distribution of hourly number of trucks arriving at a company’s

warehouse;
No.of Trucks 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
Frequency 52 151 130 102 45 12 5 1 2
Find the mean of this distribution, and using it as parameter λ, fit a Poisson
distribution. Test for goodness of fit at the 0.05 level of significance? [16]

(b) Fit the curve y = aebx for the following data

x 1 5 7 9 12
y 10 15 12 15 21

[6+10]

8. (a) The equations of two regression lines obtained in a correlation analysis are
3x+12y = 19 and 3y + 9x = 46 - obtain.
i. Mean values of x and y
ii. correlation coefficient between x and y
(b) Find the coefficient of correlation between the variable A and B.
A 2 3 6 8 5 7 10 9 4 1
B 9 6 10 4 3 7 5 8 1 2
