Louis Pasteur

Louis Pasteur was born on December 27, 1822 in Dole, France. He was skilled in drawing and painting. Louis went to school in a town called Arbois. He was an average student but decided to change that a little by getting a Bachelor in Arts and Science Degree. Louis earned a Doctorate at the Ecole Normale in 1847. He even has a school named after him. Louis spent several years researching and teaching at Dijon Lycee. In 1848, he became a professor of chemistry at the University of Strasbourg; where he met Marie Laurent, the daughter of the university rector. They got married in May 29, 1849. They had five kids but only two survived childhood. In 1854, Pasteur was appointed professor of chemistry and dean of the science faculty at the University of Lile. He demonstrated that organisms such as bacteria were responsible for souring wine, beer and even milk. He then invented a process where bacteria could be removed by boiling and then cooling liquid. He then completed the first test on April 20, 1862. Today, the process is known as pasteurization. In 1865, Pasteur helped the silk industry by proving that microbes were attacking healthy silkworm eggs, causing the disease, and that the disease would be eliminated if the microbes were eliminated. Pasteurs first vaccine was discovered in 1879. He went on to extend his germ theory to develop causes and vaccinations for diseases such as anthrax , cholera, TB, and smallpox. In 1873, Pasteur was elected as an associate member of the academe de medicine; in 1882 he decided to focus his efforts on the problem of rabies. On July 6 1885, he vaccinated a 9year old boy who was bitten by a rabid dog. The success of pastures vaccine brought him immediate fame.

Pasteur had been partially paralyzed since 1868, due to a severe brain stroke. He celebrated his 70th birthday at the Sorbonne, at that time is paralysis had worsened. He died on September 28, 1895. He died in Marnes-la-Coquette, France. Pasteur his remains were transferred to a neobyzantine crypt at the Pasteur institute in 1896. In my opinion, Louis Pasteurs insistence of discovering the reason for the souring of liquids is still very important. Because of his discovery of pasteurization, we are able to drink many

different beverages without having to worry about getting sick. We are also protected against rabies if we should ever be bitten by a rabid animal such as wild animals, dogs, rats or bats which is still a danger. Also, his discovery of the vaccine against TB, Small Pox, Anthrax and cholera has saved many lives today. It seems that Louis Pasteur was a very focused scientist who didnt stop until he came up with a solution to a problem that was affecting the people around him. Hopefully, I wont ever have to have any of the vaccinations for the diseases mentioned above but it is good to know that they are out there to help.
