drive is underway. PAGE 5
KRYSTAL TOMASSO/The Sun
Haines Farm and Garden is well in the holiday spirit as shoppers flocked to the store to pick up decorations with only two weeks left in
the shopping season. Trees, wreaths and garland were just some of the items on shoppers wish lists.
Decorating for the holiday season
Industrial
zoning
set to be
addressed
By KRYSTAL TOMASSO
The Sun
In an effort to appeal to
prospective tenants, the Cin-
naminson Committee met on
Monday, Dec. 2 and agreed to ad-
dress zoning issues for the indus-
trial site plan during the January
work session. Currently, the site
plan for the industrial zone does
not permit industries that offer
specific recreational value to the
township.
Theres a section that lists ho-
tels and conference centers as
prohibited uses in the IND zone,
but we specifically wanted to have
conference centers and hotels as
permitted use in the redevelop-
ment zone. Because if we ever got
a hotel and wanted to have a hun-
dred rooms to create a liquor li-
cense, youd want to have a con-
ference center there that would be
consistent with that size, Solici-
tor John Gillespie said.
Gillespie went on to offer assis-
tance so that 2014 will be the year
progress is made in this matter.

Sheriffs department
toy drive is underway
Burlington County Sheriff
Jean Stanfield announced that
her departments annual Toy
Drive is officially underway, and
that residents and businesses can
donate toys for children of fami-
lies in need numerous drop-offs
located throughout the county.
Stanfield said that the collec-
tion would continue until Dec. 20,
when sheriff s officers will gather
up the bins, and return them to
the county complex. Toys will
then be safety checked by the
Burlington County Department
of Consumer Affairs. Human
service agencies will work with
the sheriff to distribute the
toys.
Every year, our residents pro-
vide a wonderful response to the
toy drive, Stanfield said. The
holiday season brings out the best
in people of our county, and it en-
ables us all to put a smile on the
face of a child who might other-
wise go without.
Last year, the department col-
lected approximately 1,100 toys;
the sheriff said she is optimistic
that the drive will exceed that
number this holiday season.
Drop-off locations include mu-
nicipal buildings and police de-
partments, county government
buildings, and private businesses.
A complete list of drop-offs fol-
lows and will also be available on
the Sheriff s Department website:

Burlington Countys commitment to
cost-saving renewable energy moved anoth-
er step forward, with freeholder director
Joe Donnelly reporting that Burlington
County College, using state grant dollars,
has trained 183 individuals, consisting of
both unemployed job seekers and those
presently employed, in green energy tech-
nology.
Our workforce development efforts are
geared toward preparing our residents for
new job opportunities in the ever-evolving
workplace, Donnelly said. The college is
to be commended for recognizing that sus-
tainable energy is a rapidly developing,
high-demand field, and for providing the re-
sources to train many individuals. I ap-
plaud the college for securing the $385,000
in grant funds from the State Energy Sector
Partnership Council that made this pro-
gram a success.
Sixty-four people who participated in
the training program were already em-
ployed by Hutchinson Mechanical Services,
a company that specializes in HVAC instal-
lation and repair in South Jersey. This
training, Donnelly said, will enable them
to secure and advance their careers.
He said that 119 of the students were un-
employed, and of the 64 who responded to
follow-up surveys, 19 report they are now
employed.
Donnelly said the county and the college
will continue to work with the others to se-
cure employment, and noted that the grant
dollars are also providing for job placement
assistance.
Burlington County College is proud to
partner with the county and its agencies in
training workers for jobs that will be a vital
part of our economic future, said Burling-
ton County College president David Hespe.
Theres no question that the demand for
sustainable energy will continue to grow,
and we must take advantage of this impor-
tant trend.
Among the students who responded to
the colleges survey was Jim Keck of Haine-
sport. He was unemployed for nearly two
years after a 28-year career in construction.
He stated the training provided up-to-date
information about energy efficiency build-
ing, and gave him the confidence he needed
to regain employment as a construction su-
pervisor this summer.
It was one of the best things that could
have happened to me, Keck said. Just tak-
ing that course and realizing everything up-
stairs was still strong and my mind was
still working. It just got me going again.
Beyond the hands-on training and in-
structional materials, participants also had
the opportunity to earn the industry-recog-
nized Building Performance Institutes Res-
idential Certification.
BPI-certified professionals are more in
demand, because many state-run efficiency
and weatherization programs require BPI
credentials.
College offers green energy technology training
Y
ouve heard it time and again
lately, but its worth repeating:
Shop local this holiday season!
Were already two weeks into this
shortened holiday shopping season
since Thanksgiving was so late this
year but if you havent already fin-
ished your shopping, you should
strongly consider buying as local as
you possibly can.
Keeping your spending dollars in
your hometown, or at least in the re-
gion, has immense benefits on the
local economy.
Even companies as large as Ameri-
can Express are touting the impor-
tance of shopping local. The company
started the now well-known Small
Business Saturday the Saturday
after Thanksgiving, the day after
Black Friday in 2010 to promote
small businesses. Just last year, a
study reported an estimated $5.5 bil-
lion was spent at small businesses on
that day in 2012!
A vibrant and successful local busi-
ness community has a trickle-down ef-
fect on our own pockets. Just think:
Successful local businesses make
other businesses want to locate in our
town.
More businesses equals more rata-
bles, which, in turn, lowers our taxes.
The more ratables we have, and the
lower our taxes are, the more attrac-
tive our community becomes to future
residents.
It all starts with you. If you have a
choice between buying a gift at a big
box store or a local mom-and-pop, sup-
port your neighbors by making that
purchase locally.
Our small businesses are already
struggling with a still-rebounding
economy and a holiday shopping sea-
son that is six days shorter than nor-
mal. Lets all help them out by opening
their doors and opening our wallets to
them. We can make it a truly happy
holiday season.
in our opinion
Shop local!

The Burlington County Board
of Chosen Freeholders started its
seasonal flu and pneumonia vac-
cine clinics for adult county resi-
dents and will continue with a
total of 19 clinics countywide
through Dec. 30.
Residents with computer ac-
cess should schedule their flu
shot by visiting the health depart-
ment website, www.co.burling-
ton.nj.us/health. People can cur-
rently schedule their appoint-
ments online. Residents who have
scheduled their appointment on-
line and bring the printed and
completed consent form will be
fast tracked through the clinic.
Walk-ins will still be welcomed
but may have to wait in line.
In addition to targeting the
usual higher risk groups, such as
those aged 50 and older, people
with chronic medical conditions,
weakened immune or respiratory
systems and pregnant women, all
youths through age 23 are advised
by the Centers for Disease Con-
trol and Prevention to receive sea-
sonal flu vaccines this year to re-
duce the spread of flu in schools.
The county clinic is for adults
age 18 and older but parents can
take their children to physicians
for flu vaccines and many other
county locales will be giving the
seasonal flu vaccine, including
Southern Jersey Family Medical
Centers (www.sjfmc.org/) in
Burlington City and Pemberton.
The county health department
accepts Medicare Part B to
cover the cost for seasonal flu and
pneumonia vaccines. A donation
of $15 for seasonal flu vaccine and
$25 for pneumo is recommended
by those not covered by Medicare
if residents can afford it.
People who have Medicare cov-
erage and belong to a managed
care plan or HMO, should go to
their regular health care
providers to receive immuniza-
tions.

SPORTS SCORES
Did you know The Sun will
print sports scores, free of
charge? Send them on in.
The question to the committee
is do you want us to clean this up
and provide some standards for
you to consider at maybe a Janu-
ary work session? Gillespie
asked. The earlier you get this
done, the more you set the table
for trying to redevelop in 2014.
In other news:
Affordable housing in Cin-
naminson has been complicated
with the courts. The land has
been miscalculated in the past, of-
ficials said. The committee is an-
ticipating that the number of
units required will be high this
year and hope to develop an af-
fordable housing compliance plan
proposal by the end of February.
Appeals in the past included
land that wasnt appropriate for
development, like cemeteries,
schools, Committeewoman
Kathy Fitzpatrick said.
The goal is to stay in front of
the court and for courts to certify
the numbers, officials said.
Westfield Drive, a private
road, has been in limbo as to who
is responsible for the street for 17
years, and the committee found
an ordinance from 1996 that states
that the township received the
dedication of Westfield Drive.
However, there is no information
as to whether the dedication im-
plies responsibility to Cinnamin-
son or the Home Owners Associa-
tion.
Gillespie will check the 1996 or-
dinance to determine if the dedi-
cation is a legally binding agree-
ment for responsibility for the
street.
The next township committee
meeting will be held on Dec. 16 at
7:30 p.m.

Make the holiday brighter for
local children by participating in
Project Giving Tree at the YMCA
of Burlington and Camden Coun-
ties, a cause-driven nonprofit
charitable organization.
Through Project Giving Tree,
the Y strives to build hope
and wonder for children by pro-
viding gifts to deserving children
whose families face financial
hardship.
The Giving Trees are decorated
with tags identifying a child's
name, age, clothing size and other
items they would like from Santa.
The community is encouraged to
stop by the Y and select one or
more tags from the Tree now
through Thursday, Dec. 12 and
help make a child feel like a star
this holiday season.
Individuals and organizations
are asked to return the star(s)
with the wrapped gifts to the Y by
Friday, Dec. 13. Giving Trees are
displayed at the Mt. Laurel
YMCA located at 59 Centerton
Road in Mt. Laurel and the
Burlington-Riverfront YMCA at
302 Commerce Square Blvd. in
Burlington.
For more information on how
to participate in Project Giving
Tree, contact Pam Hall at the Mt.
Laurel YMCA at (856) 234-6200 ext.

contact Monica Pisano at the
