NFPA 130
1.2 Purpose. The purpose of this standard shall be to establish minimum requirements that will provide a reasonable degree of safety from fire and its related hazards in fixed guideway transit and passenger rail system environments.

4.2 Goal. 4.2.1 The goal of this standard shall be to provide an environment for occupants of fixed guideway and passenger rail system elements that is safe from fire and similar emergencies to a practical extent based on the following measures: (1) Protect occupants not intimate with the initial fire development (2) Maximize the survivability of occupants intimate with the initial fire development

Chapter 6 Trainways (Tunnels)

6.3.3.2.8 The emergency lighting and communications circuits shall be protected from physical damage by system vehicles or other normal system operations and from fires in the system for a period of not less than 1 hour. The circuits shall be protected from ASTM E119 fire conditions by any of the following: (1) Suitable embedment or encasement (2) Routing external to the interior underground portions of the system facilities (3) Diversity in system routing (such as separate redundant or multiple circuits separated by a 1-hour fire barrier) so that a single fire or emergency event will not lead to a failure of the system (4) Use of a listed fire-resistive cable system with a minimum 1-hour rating in accordance with 6.3.3.2.10 (UL 2196)

12.1.1 The electrical systems shall support life safety operations, fire emergency operations, and normal operations. 12.1.2 Emergency circuits installed in a road tunnel and ancillary areas shall remain functional for a period of not less than 1 hour for the anticipated fire condition, meeting one of the following methods:

NFPA 502 Chapter 12

(1) A fire-resistive cable listed for 2 hours in accordance with ANSI/UL 2196 or other equivalent internationally recognized standards to 950C (1742F) when approved by the AHJ. (2) Circuits embedded in concrete or protected by a 2hour fire barrier system in accordance with UL 1724. The cables or conductors shall be thermoset and shall be suitable to maintain functionality at the temperature within the embedded conduit or fire barrier system.

NFPA 502 Chapter 12

12.2 Wiring Methods. 12.2.1 All wiring materials and installations shall conform to NFPA 70 except as herein modified in

this standard.

12.2.1.1 All cables and conductors shall be of the moisture resistant and heat-resistant types with temperature ratings that correspond to the conditions of application. 12.2.1.2 All cables and conductors shall be listed for use in wet locations.

NFPA 502 Chapter 12

12.2.1.3 All cables and conductors used in road tunnels shall be resistant to the spread of fire and shall have reduced smoke emissions by one of the following methods: (1) All wires and cables shall be listed and shall comply with the FT4/IEEE 1202 exposure requirements for cable char height, total smoke released, and peak smoke release rate of ANSI/UL 1685.

NFPA 502 Chapter 12

(2) Wires and cables listed as having adequate fireresistant and low smoke-producing characteristics, by having a flame travel distance that does not exceed 1500 mm (4.9 ft), generating a maximum peak optical density of smoke of 0.5 and a maximum average optical density of smoke of 0.15 when tested in accordance with NFPA 262.

NFPA 502 Chapter 12

12.2.1.4 All cables and conductors used in road tunnels shall emit less than 2 percent acid gas when tested in accordance with MIL-C 24643 or in accordance with an equivalent internationally recognized standard approved by the AHJ.

NFPA 502 Chapter 12

12.3 Installation Methods. 12.3.1 All wiring shall be protected by means of metallic armor/sheath, metal raceway, electrical duct banks embedded in concrete ..

NFPA 502 Chapter 12

12.3.2 All wiring, raceways, equipment, and supports installed in a road tunnel and ancillary areas shall meet the following: (1) PVC coatings of any type shall not be permitted on exposed metallic armor/sheath, raceways, equipment, or supports.

Tunnel Wiring

NFPA 130 & 502 require cable To be listed for wet location. Is the typical UL 12 week test enough? Be resistant to the spread of fire and shall have reduced smoke emissions - IEEE/1202 and UL 1685 or NFPA 262 502 requires minimal acid gases

Should 130 have to same requirement?

Tunnel Wiring

NFPA 130 & 502 cable requirements: Circuits must survive a fire. NFPA 130 1 hour per UL 2196 @ 1700 F NFPA 502 - 2 hour per UL 2196 @ 1850 F Is this the right test for this type of fire?

Where do we go from here

Long term water testing for low voltage cable? Acid gas testing is this the right test for conductive gas? Fire test standard that matches the fire conditions for tunnel fires?
