Christ the King Mission Statement

The People of Christ the King in Lombard are a welcoming, vibrant faith community building the kingdom of God through our many ministries. We celebrate our diversity, seeking to realize the gifts of each member of our parish, as we are all joined together under one faith, in a spiritual journey of evangelization, service to others, and a reverence for all life. In the Eucharist, we find new life, and bring this life to others through stewardship, education, and worship.

The Campaign for Human Development is the domestic anti-poverty, social justice program of the U.S. Catholic Bishops. Its mission is to address the root causes of poverty in America through promotion and support of community-controlled, self-help organizations and through transformative education. The grants and education for justice program of the Campaign, implemented in collaboration with local dioceses, is supported by the annual collection received each November. Your generosity helped fund ten local programs in 2013, including: One Stitch at a Time, Faith Lutheran Church, Glen Ellyn, program for teaching sewing and community relationship to an interfaith community of refugees, Hispanics, Africans, and local poor and vulnerable residents. The well designed program with volunteer instructors teaches much more than basic and advanced sewing skills. It promotes community interactions, problem solving, and leadership with people who have little English reading skill. Students become volunteers and instructors in this very sustainable project. The second collection this weekend is for the Capital Campaign for Human Development. Thank you, Fr Peter Jarosz, On behalf of Bishop Daniel Conlon

Year of Faith 2012-2013 Stewardship and Thanksgiving Day

Page 3

Thanksgiving Day, in Canada in October and the United States in November, is a special North American feast. Although it is not a feast on the Catholic liturgical calendar, many parishes celebrate the Eucharist with the Mass of Thanksgiving. Some will have a basket of fruit and grain, or a cornucopia, adorning the foot of the altar. Thanksgiving Day truly holds a spiritual significance for the Christian steward. It is a day that makes us take notice of the fundamentals of stewardship and the importance of having a grateful heart. Thanksgiving is a day that gives us an opportunity to show our gratitude, provide hospitality and celebrate with loved ones. For the Christian steward, the holiday is rooted deeply in the biblical belief that the world was created by a loving God as a gift for each of us. From the two creation accounts in the Book of Genesis we understand that this gift of creation is intended to be received by us in thanksgiving and held in stewardship. As a matter of fact, this principle is one of the starting points for a truly Catholic worldview; that all creation is good and that the response to this gift can only be that of awe and a feeling of such gratitude that we would want to share this gift. Stewardship in the Catholic tradition affirms that into this creation, God sent Jesus the Christ to live among us and teach us the ways of God, and that our stewardship of the world includes cultivating it and building it into an even better and more grace-filled world; a world that reveals the light of Christ and is returned to his Father with increase. Stewards strive to embrace a life of gratitude; a life that reminds them of the relative abundance they enjoy. It is an abundance unavailable to most of the earths inhabitants. Most of us have much more than we really need, and the spirit of gratitude should impel us to share this relative abundance with those who are less fortunate. As Thanksgiving Day approaches, let us take stock of the many wonderful blessings we enjoy. Lets be sure to take time to thank God in prayer for our abundance; avoid the sin of an ungrateful heart; and consider how we might be even better stewards of the gifts God has entrusted to us.

New Hand Rail

You may have noticed that a new hand railing has been installed in our sanctuary near the tabernacle. This will greatly help those who are unsteady on the steps to enter and leave the sanctuary safely. Thank you to all the Eucharistic Ministers who donated the funds to cover the cost of the new hand railing. The entire project was funded through their generosity.

Why I do, What I do!

Essentially, I like to help people! My undergraduate degree is in Medical Laboratory Science. I worked inside the Intensive Care Laboratories at University of Illinois Hospital, Rush Pres St. Luke, and the Genesis Laboratory. I was assisting doctors with important laboratory testing in order for them to make a proper medical diagnosis. I was also a Financial Planner assisting families to provide for their loved ones in the event of an untimely death. This was the family business. We moved out to Lombard while expecting our fifth child. I began volunteering as a catechist at St James in Glen Ellyn. After a fire in our home, many great neighbors told us about Christ the King. We registered at Christ the King and I began as a catechist here in 1997. I was asked to teach 6th grade RE class. I fell in love with Jesus Christ and OT scripture. I was in the process of deciding to leave the Laboratory and head back to school, when then Frank Lillig asked me if I would consider Lewis University for a Masters in Pastoral Leadership. (I was planning on Education.) In Jan 2002, I graduated from Lewis University with my Masters Degree in Pastoral Leadership and began working full time as Director of Religious Education. My love for the Lord, my love of children and families has led me to where I am today. I love helping people. All of my training is useful today. Most people that I am journeying with either have health or money issues. Once a person can have their basic needs provided for, then they can begin to understand how much the God of the Universe loves them and how much he knows every hair on their head is cared for. I have continued my education through course work with Spiritual Direction, Canon Law classes, Declaration of Nullity field advocate, numerous training for Intergenerational Learning and I currently teach for the Office of Lay Ministry Formation, Diocese of Joliet, Foundations of Faith. Am I done learning? Nope. Currently, I am enrolled in the Biblical Institute from the Diocese of Joliet. This is year 1 of a 4 year study. I like to help people. If I can be of any service to you, please do not hesitate to call or email me at 630-396-6076 or eileen@ctklombard.org Yours in Christ, Eileen Maggiore, Pastoral Associate

Year of Faith: Catechism Corner

The fidelity of the baptized is a primordial condition for the proclamation of the Gospel and for the Churchs mission in the world. In order that the message of salvation can show the power of its truth and radiance before men, it must be authenticated by the witness of the life of Christians. The witness of a Christian life and good works done in a supernatural spirit have great power to draw men to the faith and to God. (CCC, n. 2044)

PADS - Thank You!

We would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude for a very special couple in our parish for the dedicated service they have provided for many years to the PADS Program. PADS, or Public Action to Deliver Shelter, assists the homeless and needy in DuPage County by providing them with a hot evening meal, warm shelter for the night, a good breakfast, and a sack lunch to take with them on their daily travels. Christ the King supports PADS by providing volunteers for one night a month at the Etz Chaim Temple on Highland Avenue. We are very lucky to have a steady supply of volunteers for the evening shifts, however, Ill bet you didnt know that the most difficult early morning 3:007:00 am shift has been covered by the same wonderful couple, the Connellys, from even before we started volunteering over 10 years ago. As part of this shift, you not only have to wake up in the middle of the night, report for duty before 3:00 am, and stay awake to supervise and assist the clients, but you also need to fully prepare the morning meal for up to 35 people, and do all the clean-up with the morning crew including bagging up all the linens, washing down the sleeping pads, putting away all the tables and chairs, and cleaning all the dishes and cooking materials. The Connellys have this down to a science. In fact when we recently had to cover for them one month when they were out of town, they provided us with a hand-written four page list of instructions outlining everything they do during these four hours. It included preparing fruit salad, assembling all the pastries, cereals, milk and juice, and other breakfast items, as well as cooking scrambled eggs, meat, and French toast for all the overnight guests. This is quite a feat, and let me tell you, when we tried to pull this off ourselves, it was no easy task. The Connellys have always taken on this great responsibility with a positive helping attitude and no matter what hard times they were going through in their lives, they persevered and always reached out with a helping hand for those more needy than them. Well, the time has come for them to retire from their service and pass the torch onto others. They have given of their time and talents so unselfishly, that we all owe them a huge thank you for all that they have done. We can only hope that we could have the strength and drive to give of ourselves in the manner that they have. Their quiet and thankless efforts are an inspiration to us all. We sincerely thank you for your selfless service Lee and Jackie Connelly. Jarrod & Martha Cebulski CTK PADS Coordinators

Making a Positive Effort My family taught the importance of coming together to pray at Mass, as all parents do. Our parents want the best for us, which includes Grace from God that we receive at Mass. As I look out in the assembly or catch a quick glance at parishioners coming in, there is great number of parishioners who attend mass regularly, high school , college after college. It is so awesome to see this and we thank you for your efforts and dedication in attending mass. Parents must be very proud! Lets take this good effort to the next level. Why dont we build on this and add opportunities of service on a parish commission, liturgical ministry, youth outreach, to name a few. As we become part of the parish leadership, we come to know others that we serve with. During this Advent Season, if you are in your 20s and 30s and want to build on the good work you have done in the past, consider one of the areas of leadership. Our staff is always willing to talk with you personally, to help you decide or answer questions. Thank you for the leadership roles you have taken at home, work and school. Lets take this to the next level and making a positive effort! Fr Peter Jarosz, Pastor frpeter@ctklombard.org

Celebration for Deacon Wayne December 1st, After Noon Mass

Deacon Wayne is a brother in Christ to Deacons Frank, and Peter, the late Deacon Fred and Father Peter. Deacon Wayne was assigned to Christ the King in 1998 at the request of Father Jim. Although the Deacons are part of the ordained clergy, the Diaconate is a call to service. In addition to the permanent deacons calling: assisting at Mass, baptizing, consoling the sick/dying and their families, assisting at funerals and weddings, Deacon Wayne was instrumental in developing ministries that continue today. Deacon Wayne inherited the already wonderful PADS program from Eileen and the late Elmer Mears. It was expanded to include Christmas and birthday celebrations, to be open 12 months of the year, and to have the participation of 152 parishioners as volunteers. Families, who sign confidentiality forms, help out and some of them continue to volunteer today. Parishioners suffering an illness or loss, were asked to offer their suffering on the PADS Sunday for the workers and clients. Their first names were read before the prayer each night of PADS at Etz Chaim. Deacon Wayne began the weekly Eucharistic Adoration at Christ the King in 2003 for Advent and it still continues today. Adoration is closed by Father or a deacon with a Holy Hour and Benediction each Thursday. Our parish has prayed thousands upon thousands of hours before the Eucharist, at the weekly Adoration for the intensions of our parishioners and the world. Deacon Wayne headed a tremendous committee to bring our Lady of the Millennium for a two week stay at Christ the King, a first in the Diocese of Joliet. He organized volunteers for 24/7 attendance during that time. Donations offered during the visit paid the expenses and generated a substantial offering for Christ the Kings educational and building programs. Over 10,000 visitors viewed Our Lady and left their petitions at her feet. The petitions from the Millennium and from Adoration were poured into the concrete connecting our old parish narthex to our new PLC. Those heart longings are seeding the earth every time we cross that threshold. Deacon Wayne was at St. Petronilles taking an additional Masters program when he suffered a severe stroke in February 2007. He might have retired at that time, but he made it clear that, in his humble way, he wanted to continue to serve God through his illness. In addition to doing the usual deacon duties with some assistance, he regularly visits the nursing homes, hospitals and cemetery services. And he phones the parishioners who are on the prayer list to give them a blessing. With assistance, Deacon Wayne conducts a prayer service at Beacon Hill every Wednesday, bringing the Eucharist, warm greetings and prayers. They know he has suffered and he understands and validates their needs. An architect, Deacon Wayne sits on the Administration Committee. Occasionally, he makes a rendering for the commissions needs. It can now be told, that he was a secret architect who occasionally reviewed the PLC and expansion plans. He would sometimes give Father Peter suggestions or ideas that he might wish to raise. Then Bishop Sartain sent Deacon Wayne a letter thanking him for his continued desire to serve through his disabilities. At one of the deacons conventions, he received a standing ovation for this desire. Although there are many parts of his brain with significant deficits, Deacon Wayne is happy, loving, sweet, funny and still as crazed about sports as ever. His life has changed as has his ministry but he still wants to be part. He lives, he laughs, he loves and he serves. That is who he is, that is who he always wasand that has not changed. THANKSGIVING Gratitude is the inward feeling of kindness received. Thankfulness is the natural impulse to express that feeling. Thanksgiving is the following of that impulse. --Henry Van Dyke

A STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE

THE EFFECT OF $1
In early November, the Parish Finance Committee released their annual report, on the finances of the parish. With it came a call, for everyone, whether actively contributing or not, to try and add $1 per week to the collection. We hope to show you what that seemingly small amount can add up to. At left is a chart of the contributions received by the parish each week, as published in the bulletin. It only tracks those contributions that will stay in the parish- the various envelopes, plus any special appeals for within the parish. It shows the cumulative amount given through each week. At the end of the fiscal year, June 30, the total contributions received through 6/30/12 came to $795,327. For the fiscal year ending 6/30/13, the total came to $754,406. That means the gap in the chart at left represents just short of $39,000less money received in 6/30/2013. There were a couple of weeks missing from the bulletin for the latter year, so we should add two typical weeks, lets use $11,000 for each. That would bring the 2013 shortfall, compared to 2012 to $17,000, more or less. Each week, there are a little over 300 families using their envelopes. If each of those families added $1, each week for a year, that adds $15,600 the total collections (300 families times 52 weeks). That, basically, eliminates the difference. If the other 1,100 families in the parish, whether actively contributing (using cash or electronic deposit) or not, each added $1 a week, that would add another $57,200 to the total. That would have meant a total of $849,000+ for the fiscal year 6/30/13. That would have meant $70,000 more for the parish to use- to pay down the mortgage; for religious education and adult formation classes; for PADS, St Vincent DePaul, and the food pantry; and all the other ministries we offer to our own congregation, and the greater community in need. Quite a bit, for only $1. The Administration Commission
