Long term effects

Cocaine psychosis (paranoid delusions, hallucinations, bizarre, aggressive or violent behavior) Eating and sleeping disorders Impaired sexual performance Ongoing respiratory problems Convulsions Kidney failure Increased risk of experiencing a stroke Risk of contracting hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV.

Heroin

What is it

Heroin is one of a group of drugs known as "opiates". Other opiates include opium, morphine, codeine, pethidine, oxycodone, buprenorphine and methadone. Heroin and other opiates are depressants. Depressants do not necessarily make you feel depressed. Rather, they slow down the activity of the central nervous system and messages going between the brain and the body. Heroin is known by a variety of other names, including: horse, hammer, H, dope, smack, junk, gear and boy.

Skin, heart and lung infections Increases the risk of blood-borne diseases like hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV when sharing needles

Alcohol

Short term effects

injuries from violence (as a perpetrator, a victim, or a witness); pedestrian and road accidents (death/severe injury); drowning; trauma related admissions to hospital emergency departments; alcohol poisoning; social and personal consequences such as the impact on families and social embarrassment; loss of valuable items ie phone or wallet; and having unprotected sex and placing yourself at greater risk of a sexually transmitted infection (STI) and/or an unwanted pregnancy

Long term effects social problems, such as spending more time drinking than pursuing other interests; brain damage, including the inability to learn and remember things; depression and suicidal thoughts; the development of chronic disease, including some cancers and heart disease; cirrhosis of the liver; and dependence on alcohol
