5.4.2

Levell Geotechnical Investigations

Level 1 geotechnical investigation shall be based on a visual-tactile examination of disturbed soil san1ples for the determination of both soil classification and strength. Visual-tactile exmnination shall be undeliaken in accordance with the recommendations of ASTM D2488. Samples shall be taken from either trial pits, bore holes, hand held augers, or if agreed by the Owner/Engineer during course of the foundation excavation. Where dynamic probing is used in conjunction with a higher level geotechnical investigation technique, the probe shall be calibrated to the satisfaction of the Owner/Engineer against the results of the higher level tests. Details of the Contractor's calibration proposals and calibration results shall be submitted to the Owner/Engineer. This is a Hold Point.

5.4.3

Level 2 Geotechnical Investigations

Level 2 geotechnical investigation shall be based on in-situ testing for the determination of the soil strength and visual tactile examination of disturbed samples for the determination of soil classification. In-situ testing shall comply with the following requirelnents: 1. 2. 3. Non-cohesive soil - standard penetration tests (SPTs), cone penetration tests (ePTs), or in the absences of large gravel content pressure meter tests (PMTs). Cohesive soil - As non-cohesive soils except that use of SPTs is subject to the Engineer's approval. Vane shear tests (VSTs) may also be used in fairly uniform, fully saturated soils. Rock - Weak rock SPTs, medium to hard rock PMTs.

Where it is proposed to determine the soil classification indirectly from the in-situ tests ego CPTs, cross correlation shall be undertaken at specified intervals using auger borings. Where appropriate, ground water levels shall be recorded in all boreholes.

5.4.4

Soil and Groundwater samples

Where required by the Owner/Engineer, soil and ground water samples shall be tested for determination of the chemical content ie. organic matter, sulphate, pH and chloride content. All laboratory testing shall be undertaken in accordance with BS 1377.

5.4.5

Frequency of Geotechnical Investigations

Contractor shall carry out level 2 Geotechnical Investigations at all tension tower locations. There shall be at least one bore hole every 1000 m of the route. Level 1 investigation shall be carried out at all other tower locations.

5.4.6

Geotechnical Investigation Criteria

Geotechnical investigation shall be undertaken to the following criteria:

1.

Geotechnical investigation shall be undertaken as near as possible to the tower site. For test foundations the investigation shall be undertaken as near as possible to the test site, and shall take account of the theoretical failure surface of the foundation; Time lapse between the investigation and foundation installation shall take into account any noticeable effect on the geotechnical properties due to rainfall or seasonal variations in the groundwater level; Depth of investigation shall be: a. for trial pits 2 m; or b.foundation depth plus 1.5 times the maximum base width dimension for concrete pad and chimney foundation or steel grillage foundations; or
