The Organisation

The Richmond Psychosocial Foundation International (RPFI) is a non-profit, non-government organisation without religious affiliations, dedicated to the development of effective and innovative community based therapeutic care for children, young people and adults in the ! and abroad The mission of the Richmond Psychosocial Foundation International is to" develop innovative therapeutic communities in the ! and abroad for children, young people and adults and use its e#pertise to inform psychosocial therapeutic care internationally promote understanding, awareness and effective responses to the needs of individuals and families affected by mental health problems of all $inds worldwide, particularly in those countries and regions where mental illness and its effects remain relatively unrecognised and under-resourced coordinate and disseminate information, promote awareness of good practice in mental health provision% establish lin$s between our associates and other bodies internationally promote and support the creation of community-based resources (half-way homes day centres, outreach programmes) whose purpose is to support those suffering from mental health problems of various $inds in achieving and maintaining recovery and emotional and economic independence consult with local and central governments, &'()s and community leaders, as well as medical and academic institutions, in assessing need and culturally appropriate responses in relation to the development of specific economic and effective mental health pro*ects and programmes support and respond to initiatives by local sta$eholders in the ! as well as in other countries across the world, by helping them identify available resources, both staff and finance, from local, national and international sources

Throughout the lifetime of the organisation and its predecessor, the aim in each country or region has been to establish and develop affiliated but independent, non-government, non profitma$ing organisations, governed and operated by local boards, trustees or management bodies% adaptive, responsive to and driven by national and local need and circumstances, yet sharing common aims+ The worldwide networ$ of Richmond Fellowship ,harities has been e#tremely successful in spreading its approach and philosophy across the globe and, by so doing, in enhancing the -uality of life of many thousands of distressed people as well as saving hundreds from suicide+ Today there are ./ active 0ssociations world-wide, the ma*ority of which having become consolidated as independent national or state organisations, with an impressive range of services+

Project - Bangladesh Project aim To reduce poverty and suffering through the delivery of community based mental health services in Bangladesh. Why it is needed 1angladesh is a poor, populous, rapidly urbanising country, highly vulnerable to natural disasters and already e#periencing the effects of climate change+ Population growth is a continuing challenge with 232m people living in an area the si4e of 5ngland and 6ales+ 7igh levels of poverty and ine-uality e#ist and 89 million people are unemployed+ The health system is not in a position to respond to the challenges and effectively to meet the needs of the poor and disadvantaged+ (5 Report, .922) 0ccording to &ational :ental 7ealth ;urvey in .998 < = about 2>+=? of the adult population in the country are suffering from mental disorders+ In 1angladesh there is no mental health authority, mental health legislation or human rights body+ There is only one mental health hospital for a population of 232 million and there are no follow-up @care in the communityA or day treatment facilities+ Public health e#penditures is e#tremely low+ (nly 9+=? of the health budget is spent on mental health and >/? of this funding is spent on the mental hospital+ (67( :ental 7ealth Report < .99/) Who will benefit :entally ill people and their families, mentally ill people in the mental hospital, substance misusers and their families, women and children living in slums, people with 7IB C 0ids, mental health services and the wider &'( sector, staff who receive training, employers and the general public, which will have an ever growing new awareness and ability to act preventatively+ Project plan :ay < (ctober .92. < Pro*ect planning in the !
