Brown Rugby Kicks Off Fall 2005 Season

The Brown Rugby Club kicked off the 2005 fall season at home on Saturday with a
scrimmage against both Providence College and the Rhody Old Cocks, the local Rhode
Island over 35 team. With a week’s pre-season under their belts, the Brown First XV
showed fitness and resolve in tying PC in a 30 minute scrimmage at 5-5 and defeating the
over 35’s by a score of 17-10. The Brown Second XV were beaten 12-0 and the Third
XV for Brown, comprised of an entirely rookie team ended 0-0.

The First XV demonstrated superior fitness and attacking skill but were unable to win
consistent scrum and lineout possession. The Club will have to work hard on their
forward play and be more aggressive in contact to be successful against the University of
New Hampshire next week. Against PC, Brown scored their lone try off a kick ahead by
flyhalf Phil Roux ’06 that was touched down by captain and outside center Matt Gelb
’06. Brown had some trouble with PC’s runners off rucks, but were able to hold them to
one try.

Against Rhody, captain Gelb ran his first try in from 10 yards out and then gave a nice
pass to wing Elicott “Cutter” Wood ’06. Rhody had also score two tries, and with the
score even at 10, wing Aldun Andre’07 scored from 40 yards out. This last try was
converted by inside center Jeff Margulies ’07. The Rhody team did play Brown’s coach,
Skip Barry and also, Paul Fitzpatrick ’96 ( I don’t think he’s 35!)

With several players out due to injury, the second side had to play several rookies who
were a bit overwhelmed in the Second XV match. However, this squad has great promise
if we can stay healthy. PC’s forwards were able to roll mauls and make good yardage
with their runners. Both of PC’s tries were scored by their forwards.

Brown’s Third XV was a spirited bunch and should do well as they learn the game. The
freshmen have only been at training for a week and will need a bit more work to develop
their play.

The First and Second XV squads are listed below. From our season opener on, we will
list all those who play. Next Saturday Brown travels to the University of New Hampshire
for a match. The kickoff will be at 1 P.M. Check the Brown web site, BrownRugby.com,
