No es soroche, es la emocin de estar tan cerca del cielo, lean los recin llegados al arribar al aeropuerto del Cusco aos atrs. El cartel ya no existe, pero la emocin se mantiene. Esta ciudad no solo es el camino para llegar al Valle Sagrado y Machu Picchu. Ac hay mucho ms que hacer que tomarse una foto con una llama. Hoy, Cusco se nutre de las nuevas generaciones y de sus ganas de hacer las cosas bien, as como de los nuevos vecinos que llegan de todo el mundo. El 2011 fue un ao feliz para los sibaritas. Apareci la nueva estrella gastronmica de la ciudad: Le Soleil. En pleno corazn de los Andes, este restaurante gourmet francs sirve un canard lorange capaz de robar una nostlgica sonrisa al galo ms exigente. Tambin abri sus puertas La Bodega 138 y empez la feliz experiencia de disfrutar de sus pizzas artesanales, como la memorable Puna, de prosciutto y rcula. Los dulceros encontraron su pedazo de paraso en El Hada. Sus helados artesanales, macarons y cafs merecen un sincero aplauso. Sentarse a medioda en la Plaza de Armas sigue siendo una de las mejores formas de observar una parte del Cusco cotidiano. Its not altitude sickness, its the thrill of being so close to heaven, a sign once welcomed arrivals to the Cusco Airport. The sign isnt there anymore, but the excitement remains. This city is not just the point of entry to Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley of the Inca, and theres so much more to do than take a picture with a llama. Today, Cusco draws on new generations and their commitment to doing things well and likewise benefits from new neighbors who have come from around the world. The year 2011 was a happy one for gourmands, highlighted by the opening of the citys star dining attraction, Le Soleil. In the heart of the Andes, this gourmet French restaurant serves a canard lorange thats sure to put a nostalgic smile on the face of even the most demanding Frenchman. Also opening its doors was La Bodega 138, serving hand-thrown pizzas like the memorable Puna, topped with prosciutto and arugula. And visitors with a sweet tooth found a slice of paradise at El Hada, which serves handmade ice cream, French macaroons and coffee that are worthy of sincere applause. Hanging out in the Plaza de Armas at noon is one of the best ways to get a feel for everyday life in Cusco. On any day of the week, as you relax on the green wooden benches,

No es raro que una o varias comparsas de danza aparezcan de la nada, pintando los adoquines de la plaza con msica y color. Testigo permanente de esta curiosa convivencia, la imponente Catedral abre sus enormes puertas a fieles y curiosos. A espaldas de sta, las calles se elevan hacia las nubes. Las viejas casonas blancas con puertas azules delatan la entrada a San Blas. Caminar por sus calles es una bocanada de aire fresco en pleno centro. A pesar de los incontables hostales y restaurantes, tras muchas puertas siguen viviendo las familias tradicionales, como los Mendvil, Olave o Mrida. Artesanos que ahora comparten calle con jvenes joyeros, pintores y creadores. Desde lo alto, el mirador del barrio recompensa a los valientes que suban hasta l con una vista panormica, que literalmente, deja sin aliento. Siglos antes de ser bautizado con nombre de santo, San Blas se llamaba Tococachi y formaba parte de los barrios que rodeaban al Cusco incaico. En ese entonces, los lmites de la ciudad dibujaban la silueta de un inmenso puma. Hay quienes dicen que se trat quizs de un posible homenaje al Lago Titicaca, que en quechua significa puma de piedra y cuyas aguas tambin tienen la forma de este felino.

Its not unusual for one or more dance groups to appear out of nowhere, painting the cobblestones with music and color. A permanent witness to this curious mix, the imposing Cathedral opens its enormous doors to churchgoers and sightseers alike. Behind the Cathedral, the streets climb up to the clouds. The old, white manor houses with their blue doors mark the entrance to the neighborhood of San Blas. Walking its streets is a breath of fresh air in the heart of downtown. Despite the areas countless hostels and restaurants, San Blas is still home to many traditional families, like the Mendvils, Olaves and Mridas, artisans who now share the streets with young jewelers, painters and other creative souls. From above, the neighborhood lookout rewards the intrepid with a panoramic view that will literally leave you breathless. Centuries before being given the name of a saint, San Blas was known as Tococachi and was one of the neighborhoods that surrounded Cusco in the time of the Inca, when the city limits traced the silhouette of a immense puma. Some think that this design was a homage to Lake Titicaca, which in the Quechua language means stone puma and whose shores are also shaped like this feline.

Si CUscO es ALtO, PUNO LO es Ms AN En las orillas del lago Titicaca se encuentra la ciudad de Puno, a 390 kilmetros de Cusco. Durante siglos, los pueblos de ambas tierras estuvieron unidos por caminos inca y hoy una carretera permite seguir las huellas del pasado. El recorrido turstico se detiene en lugares que pocos conocen, como la impresionante iglesia de Andahuaylillas o el sitio arqueolgico de Raqchi. Despus de estar en Cusco, parece difcil mantener despierta la capacidad de asombro. Pero Puno ofrece sorpresas notables, con un paisaje lacustre nico y culturas vivas. Ac se sienten, al llegar, los 3,827 metros de altitud, pero el cuerpo se acostumbra y la ciudad tiene muchos rincones con encanto para descubrir. Al salir de Puno, el ladrillo es rpidamente reemplazado por la naturaleza. Infinitas llanuras tapizadas de pastos, interrumpidas por manantiales y pequeas lagunas. As es el paisaje durante la media hora de camino hacia las chullpas de Sillustani, una necrpolis preinca. Frente a la hermosa laguna de Umayo, los inmensos torreones circulares de piedra, de hasta 12 metros de altura, son las tumbas de antiguos colla, pueblo Aymara, momificados. Sin grupos de turistas, por las maanas el silencio es el mejor gua posible. Por otro lado, es imposible venir al Titicaca y no visitar sus islas. Las ms cercanas son las islas flotantes de los Uros, pueblo de origen precolombino. Para los uros, la totora era una planta enviada por los dioses. Con esta especie de junco que crece en el lago construyen sus islas, sus casas, alimentan a sus animales, la usan como combustible y fabrican artesanas. Estas islas son tan flotantes que estn ancladas para evitar que un fuerte viento las lleve lejos. Despus de visitarlos, sucede lo que pareca imposible: el Titicaca se hace an ms inmenso. La ciudad en el horizonte y las siluetas de los cerros nos recuerdan que estamos en un lago. Quedan tres horas de navegacin para llegar a Amantan, la mayor isla del lago, donde pasaremos la noche. El viento sopla con fuerza, el sol brilla en medio del cielo y platina las aguas del lago. Desde el techo del bote, no hay nada en que pensar, las ideas se pierden sin regreso. Con las cabezas cubiertas por elegantes mantos negros, que contrastan con sus polleras de colores, las mujeres son las encargadas de recibir a los huspedes en el muelle de Amantan. Las familias de la isla estn organizadas y se rotan el alojamiento de viajeros,

IF CUscO Is HiGh, PUNO Is EVeN HiGheR On the shores of Lake Titicaca, youll find the city of Puno, located 240 miles from Cusco. For centuries, Inca roads linked both cities. Today, a highway allows you to follow the traces of the past. The tourist route makes stops at little-known places, like the impressive Iglesia de Andahuaylillas or the Raqchi archeological site. You might think that it would be difficult to be surprised after visiting Cusco, but Puno has wonders of its own, with unique lakeside scenery and vibrant cultures. Youll feel the altitude of 12,556 feet when you first arrive, but once your body adjusts, the city has plenty of charming spots to discover. As you leave Puno, brick construction rapidly gives way to nature endless grassy plains, interrupted by springs and small lagoons. This is the scenery on the half-hour trip to the chullpas of Sillustani, a pre-Inca necropolis. Facing the beautiful Umayo lagoon, the immense circular towers some nearly 40 feet tall are the tombs of ancient, mummified Colla, an Aymara people. In the mornings, which are free of tourists, silence is your best possible guide.

No visit to Titicaca is complete without a visit to the islands. The closest are the floating islands of the Uros, a preColombian people who believed that totora was a plant sent by the gods. They used this type of reed to build their islands and their homes, to feed their animals, to use as fuel and to make into various objects, which are now local folk art. The floating islands actually have to be anchored so they dont drift away with a strong breeze. After a visit to these islands, the impossible happens: Titicaca becomes even more immense. The city on the horizon and the silhouettes of the mountains remind us that were on a lake. Its three hours by boat to Amantan, the largest island on the lake, where well spend the night. A strong wind is blowing, and the sun shines above, making the waters shimmer. On the roof of the boat, theres nothing to think about. Your thoughts simply drift away. With their heads covered by elegant black scarves that contrast with their colorful skirts, the indigenous women are responsible for welcoming guests at the Amantan pier. The islands families are organized and rotate the responsibility of providing lodging for travelers, an example of how the local

Es tiempo de cosecha, el color verde y las flores pueblan el paisaje de la isla. Antes de que el da se apague, hay que hacer un ltimo esfuerzo para subir al cerro Coanos, hasta llegar a Pachatata, un centro ceremonial preinca. Una vez arriba, a ms de 4,115 metros de altura, el cansancio ya no existe, ste se diluye en el asombro de presenciar el atardecer. A lo lejos, el da se va acabando, tiendo al lago de naranjas y grises efmeros, hasta que solo se ven las siluetas de las montaas. A la maana siguiente en el muelle, la despedida est poblada de sonrisas emocionadas. Solo llegamos ayer, pero para algunos, algo cambi. El bote enciende su motor rumbo a Taquile. Es domingo, y como todos los das, los taquileos llevan sus ropas tradicionales. Mientras caminan por la isla, los hombres tejen y las mujeres hilan la lana. En el 2005, los tejidos de Taquile fueron declarados Patrimonio Inmaterial de la Humanidad por la Unesco. She nods, smiles and continues walking along gracefully. At her home in the community of Occopampa, the patio is full of geese, potatoes and quinoa. Its harvest time, with greenery and flowers coloring the island scenery. Before the day ends, youll need to make one last effort to climb Cerro Coanos to reach Pachatata, a pre-Inca ceremonial center. Its Sunday, and like every day, the people of Taquile are all decked out in their traditional garb. As they walk along the island, the men weave and the women spin wool. In 2005, the fabrics of Taquile were granted Intangible Cultural Heritage status by UNESCO. Just one more reason to climb the thousands of feet from sea level to reach this part of Peru. in
