Colombian Truckers Reach Agreement with Government, Lift Roadblocks

Colombias Minister of Transportation, Cecilia lvarez-Correa, and the leaders of the two principal truckers unions have signed an agreement that will end the truckers participation in the nationwide General Strike. According to Colombias El Heraldo Newspaper, after nine hours of negotiations, the Colombian government agreed to freeze the price of fuel through December and to reevaluate and regulate the fletes, fees the government taxes on transport companies. In exchange, the truckers have agreed to lift their roadblocks. The agreement will end the strike, which began August 19, and involved more than 200,000 truckers, represented by the Asociacin Colombiana de Transportadores (ACT) and the Asociacin Colombiana de Camioneros (ACC). The roadblocks erected by truckers and striking farmers, miners and indigenous communities have paralyzed the country. Many regions of the country, especially in the south of the country, remain cut off from transport by strikers. Negotiations with many unions continue, and striking farmers in the central state of Boyac, which saw the worst roadblocks and violence, have threatened to block the roads again if the government does not make good on promises it made earlier this week.

Ministro de Transporte de Colombia, Cecilia lvarez-Correa, y los lderes de los dos principales sindicatos de camioneros han firmado un acuerdo que ponga fin a la participacin de los camioneros en la huelga general en todo el pas.

Segn el diario El Heraldo de Colombia, despus de nueve horas de negociaciones, el gobierno colombiano decidi congelar el precio del combustible a travs de diciembre y volver a evaluar y regular los "fletes", los honorarios de los impuestos del gobierno sobre las empresas de transporte. A cambio, los camioneros han decidido levantar sus barricadas.

El acuerdo pondr fin a la huelga, que comenz el 19 de agosto, y participaron ms de 200 mil camioneros, representados por la Asociacin Colombiana de Transportadores (ACT) y la Asociacin Colombiana de Camioneros (ACC). Las barricadas erigidas por los camioneros y agricultores en huelga, los mineros y las comunidades indgenas han paralizado el pas.
