The worst day of my life
I was sure this was going to be the worst day of my life. Why? Today I was beginning
a new school. The school I used to attend was just perfect. The teachers were nice
and helpful, it was close to my home and of course, the best thing of all was that I had
many friends. I was used to the routine there. Changing to a new school worried me.
What if I didnt get along with the teachers? What if the new classes were difficult
for me? The most important thing was what if I didnt make any friends? I was unhappy
but my Mother said I would get used to the new school quickly. I wasnt completely
convinced but I didnt tell her. Her confidence in me was important and this encouraged
me to get out of bed, get dressed, have breakfast, pick up my books
and start off to the bus stop.
While I was walking to the bus stop I saw an elderly woman who
was trying to get her dog out of the flower garden in the park. I asked
her if she needed help. She said: " Yes, please, my dog Spot is in the
flowers". Spot was very large and very strong. He was barking loudly
and chasing a cat in the flower bed. After several minutes of talking
to Spot, we were able to calm him down and get him away from the flowers and the
cat. The woman thanked me very much and I felt good for helping her. I couldnt stay
and talk because it was late and I had to hurry to the bus stop.

Suddenly, a boy on a bicycle sped by so fast that he almost knocked me down.
He turned the corner too quickly and fell off his bike. I ran over to see if he was hurt.
"You are crazy for going so fast", I said. "Im sorry", he said. "My names Peter and Im
late for school". He was feeling fine but his bike was destroyed. "Im going to have to
carry it home". I was unsympathetic because he had almost run me over. He said
goodbye and turned down the side street. Luckily I was at the bus
stop just when the bus came.
At last I arrived at school. There were many people and I
felt lost. Just then, a loud siren began to sound. The fire alarm was
ringing. Kids ran from the classrooms and the teachers shouted
"Stay calm, dont run". Smoke was coming from the science
laboratory. "Fire, fire", someone shouted. I didnt know which
way to go and I began to cough from the smoke. "Over here" a familiar voice cried. I
looked up and saw Peter. He helped me outside and we waited until the fire brigade
arrived. Three hours later the firemen said we could go back into school.
Peter took me to the secretarys office because this was my first day and I still
had to register. The secretary told me which class to go to. I found the room, entered
and sat down in the last row. The teacher didnt look at me and the other students
were busy working. The class was History. I was sitting beside the window and looking
out at the garden. I heard my name: "Susan", "Susan Parker". I turned to look at
Mr. Nelson, the teacher. "What can you tell us about the great London Fire?" "Nothing",
I said. "I don't know anything about it". Mr Nelson asked
someone else who told the complete story. I felt really dumb.
My first day and I didnt know the answer.
Finally, the lunch bell rang and I left quickly to go to
the cafeteria. I got my lunch and went to sit at a table in the
back. "Come over here", I heard. Looking up I saw Peter again.
He was at a table with eight other friends and there was a free
place. "Come on", he said. I went over and sat down and
soon was talking with everyone. They seemed very nice.
As I was walking to the bus stop, I remembered my day. After all, it wasn't
so bad. By the time school was over for the day, I already had some friends. During
the day I helped an elderly woman, met Peter after his bicycle accident, and escaped
unharmed from the fire. My teachers were nice and the classes were interesting. Really,
this turned out to be a pretty good day, after all.
