WHAT WE ARE DOING

We meet needs called into our support line 512-537-1080 or that we learn about when distributing food in the neighborhood. We continue to provide assistance via:
INFORMATION & COMMUNICATIONS: We are available to: Listen and hear peoples traumatic stories about their experiences during and after the disaster Distribute information via bilingual fliers, a text alert system and the web. Weve set up a community information board in the neighborhood CLEANUP: Volunteers are available upon request if you need help gutting or cleaning your house or yard. FOOD: Gathering donations, and cooking and delivering nourishing culturally appropriate meals. We are serving one hot meal a day so far SUPPLIES: We are focused primarily on meeting concrete needs called in. In addition we are providing food and items to keep people warm. CHILDREN: We are tracking families with children to make sure they have what they need!

When Halloween was approaching, rain and flood warnings permeated the radio. Unfortunately, those warnings were not heeded by City Officials. After the gauges were no longer functioning, Onion Creek climbed 22 ft in 3 hours. The Creek crested at 40 feet, pouring through neighborhoods into the homes of many still fast asleep. It took minutes for homes to flood with 4 or more feet of water. The City took hours to respond to the first 911 calls. How could this be? Five people were killed along with dozens of horses and other animals. 1100 homes flooded, with 660 structures damaged or destroyed. Over 200 school children are homeless. Most of the residents in the areas hardest hit are lower income with a high proportion of African-Americans and Latinos. Many families are still dealing with the trauma that comes from such a terrifying experience and the sudden loss of everything. Austin Common Ground emerged, building off the name and work of a similar effort in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.
