Harmony with
the Olympic Family
T
he IOC confirmed to me once again in a recent letter its exclusive recognition of
the FIVB as the only governing body of Volleyball and Beach Volleyball on an
international level. The importance of a strong relationship with the International
Olympic Committee is vitally important for the FIVB. Indeed, we need to continue to
improve our relations with the Olympic Family. The order of the day is mutual respect,
understanding and a friendly working environment between the FIVB, the IOC and all
international sporting federations.
I believe so strongly in working harmoniously with the IOC that I have given FIVB
Executive Vice President Rita Subowo – who is also an IOC Member and Indonesia
Olympic Committee President – the task of maintaining the bridges built between the
FIVB and IOC. Mrs. Subowo is the perfect person to manage this relationship – as can
be gleaned from her interview in this edition of VolleyWorld.
There is one current topic I am very clear that we need to follow the IOC’s example on.
This is on the matter of the FIVB Financial Regulations article that allows commissions
of up to 10 percent be paid to FIVB members for signing commercial contracts. The IOC
ethics commission guidelines state that money raised by the sport should be kept by
the sport. Our tax exemption allowances in Switzerland are in place because we are a
non-profit organisation. We must observe this. Our recent FIVB Board of Administration
meeting in Lausanne saw a unanimous vote to delete article 1.6.5 that allows
commissions to be paid.
This is a big step in the right direction for the FIVB. We need to realize we are not
always right. If there is a better way to do things, we need to remedy things we have
done in the past to achieve this. I am not immune from the mistakes we have made. I
have in the past endorsed the payment of commissions for commercial contracts. The
past is passed and the Board approved this practice. The future of the FIVB involves
working side-by-side with the IOC, not in conflict with them. That means we have to
follow their guidelines like the other members of the Olympic Family.

Armonía en la
Familia Olímpica
U
na vez más, el COI me confirmó mediante una carta reciente, su reconocimiento
exclusivo de la FIVB como único órgano ejecutivo del Voleibol y del Voleibol de Playa a
nivel internacional. La importancia de mantener una estrecha relación con el Comité
Olímpico Internacional es de vital importancia para la FIVB. Efectivamente, tenemos que
continuar mejorando nuestras relaciones con la Familia Olímpica. La orden del día es: respeto
mutuo, comprensión y un entorno de trabajo cordial entre todas las federaciones internacionales
deportivas. Creo tan firmemente en una labor armoniosa con el COI, que he conferido a Rita
Subowo, Vicepresidente Ejecutivo de la FIVB – quien es además miembro del COI y Presidente
del Comité Olímpico de Indonesia – la misión de mantener los lazos creados entre la FIVB y el
COI. La Sra. Subowo es la persona perfecta para la gestión de esta relación - como puede
deducirse de su entrevista en esta edición de VolleyWorld.
Hay un tema actual del cual estoy convencido que tenemos que seguir el ejemplo del COI. En
concreto, el tema se refiere al artículo del Reglamento Financiero de la FIVB, que permite a los
miembros de la FIVB recibir comisiones de hasta un 10 por ciento por la firma de contratos
comerciales.
Las directrices de la Comisión de Ética del COI establecen que el dinero producido por el
deporte debe ser conservado para el deporte. Nuestra exoneración de impuestos en Suiza es
correcta, porque nosotros somos una organización sin ánimo de lucro. Debemos tenerlo en
cuenta. Nuestra reciente reunión del Consejo de Administración de la FIVB en Lausana decidió,
con un voto unánime, cancelar el artículo 1.6.5 que permite el pago de comisiones.
Ese es un gran paso dado en la dirección correcta por la FIVB. Debemos comprender que no
siempre tenemos razón. Si hay una mejor forma de hacer las cosas, tenemos que corregir lo
que hemos hecho en el pasado para lograrlo. No me considero ajeno a los errores cometidos.
En el pasado firmé pagos de comisiones debidas a contratos comerciales. El pasado quedó atrás
y el Consejo aprobó esta práctica. El futuro de la FIVB presupone que hay que trabajar al lado del
COI, no en conflicto con él. Ello significa que tenemos que seguir sus indicaciones, al igual que
todos los miembros de la Familia Olímpica.

in early April. The Board discussed a wide
range of proposals and made several key
decisions, which will be forwarded to the
FIVB World Congress for final approval.
One of the most notable outcomes was
the decision to revise a proposed rule on
limitations on the number of foreign
players allowed to appear on the court at
the same time during club competitions.
After analyzing European legal conflicts
and labor laws, the Legal Commission
recommended that it would be impossible
to enforce limitations on ITC players
(athletes with an international transfer

therefore be left to the discretion of each
National Federation.
The FIVB nevertheless recommends that
National Federations do their utmost to ensure
as many local players as possible are used in
domestic competitions.
It was also agreed that transfers of players
within a continent will be handled by the
Continental Confederation in question,
provided the transfers are registered at the
FIVB and the transfer fees are shared between
the FIVB and relevant Confederations.
In addition, a decision on the “14-player rule,”
a proposal to allow teams in specific
competitions to dress 14 players instead of 12,
will be postponed to provide the Rules of the
Game, Coaching and Refereeing Commissions

Taking into account their improved role in
decision-making processes at the FIVB, the
Board approved an increase in annual financial
contributions to the five Continental
Confederations, beginning in 2009. Investment
in development and anti-doping projects will be
prioritized.
The Board also decided to delete article 1.6.5
from the FIVB Financial Regulations concerning
commissions paid out to FIVB members for
contracts.
It was agreed that the qualification system for
Olympic Beach Volleyball will be altered to
designate Olympic berths to National
Federations rather than individual teams,
allowing each Federation the option of
changing players. The 24 teams to qualify for
each of the men’s and women’s Olympic
ITC (atletas con certificado internacional de
traslado).
La composición de los equipos, en sus ligas
respectivas y campeonatos, debiera por
consiguiente quedar a discreción de cada una
de las Federaciones Nacionales.
No obstante, la FIVB recomienda a las
Federaciones Nacionales que hagan todo lo
que esté a su alcance a fin de que, en las
competiciones nacionales, se emplee la mayor
cantidad posible de jugadores del país. Se
convino asimismo que los traslados de
jugadores dentro de un continente sean
gestionados por la correspondiente
Confederación Continental, siempre que tales
traslados resulten registrados en la FIVB y los
gastos correspondientes se repartan entre la
FIVB y las respectivas Confederaciones.
Además, la decisión sobre la “regla del
14-jugador”, una propuesta para permitir que
los equipos, en competiciones específicas,
dispongan de 14 jugadores en lugar de 12,
será aplazada para que las Comisiones de
Reglas del Juego, de Entrenadores y
Arbitrajes, dispongan de más tiempo para
examinarla.

Mundial de Voleibol de Playa FIVB, los dos
vencedores de las “Finales de Copa Mundial”
del Voleibol de Playa FIVB y una opción para un
equipo de la nación anfitriona.

tournaments will be comprised of the 16 top
teams from the SWATCH FIVB World Tour
rankings, the five winners of the continental
phase of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Cup,
the two winners of an FIVB Beach Volleyball
“World Cup Finals,” and one entry from the
host country.
Changes to regulations regarding participation
in the 2010 version of the World League are
being tackled by an FIVB World League Council
working group. It is tasked with finding a new
and fair system to select teams for the World
League that strikes a balance between the
commercial line and the sporting line.
The working group proposed that the
participating 16 teams in 2010 be comprised of
the top 14 teams from the 2009 FIVB World
League and two teams who win a “promotion-
relegation” playoff series at the end of the
2009 season. The Board agreed in principle
that the 15th and 16th-placed teams from
2009 face the top two teams from a new
World League qualification ranking, with the
winners reserving the right to play in the
World League in 2010. There will be no change

seleccionar equipos para la Liga Mundial, que
establezca un equilibrio entre la línea comercial

to the qualification system used in the 2009
edition of the FIVB World Grand Prix. There
was consensus that an improvement in the
level of teams wishing to take part in the
Grand Prix be raised before increasing the
number of teams from 12 to 16. FIVB Board
member Marta Centeno De Sajche of
Guatemala was elected to the FIVB Executive
Committee to fill the NORCECA quota,
following the retirement of former President
Dr. Rubén Acosta. With the departure from
the FIVB Board of Carlos Beltran of Puerto
Rico, and in respect of continental quotas,
NORCECA will make a decision on its two
available Board seats at its upcoming regional
Board meeting.
On the development front, it was agreed that
Development Centres should focus on Mass
Volley and Beach Volleyball in 2009, and, if all
requirements are met, the FIVB would
consider paying for coaches at the Centres on
a step-by-step basis. Furthermore, a budget
will be set aside to encourage National
Federations to participate in and promote Volley
All Festivals.
As part of World Vision 2012 activities, it was
proposed that an award be given to the most
improved National Federation in each of the
Continental Confederations.
A study is to be carried out on the creation of
an Athletes Commission as suggested by the
International Olympic Committee, to be
presented at the next Executive Committee
meeting in Fukuoka in November.
Proposals for media changes included new
distribution formats for TV, including a weekly
Volleyball highlights program during events and
a revised Beach Volleyball highlight program.
A colored Volleyball court will be tested at
national-level events, as will line-sensor
systems, microphones on referees and the
color of referee uniforms.

Guatemala, miembro del Consejo de la FIVB,
se vio elegida por el Comité Ejecutivo FIVB

el retiro del anterior Presidente Dr. Rubén
Acosta. Con la salida del Consejo de la FIVB de
Carlos Beltrán, de Puerto Rico, y en lo que
respecta a las cuotas continentales, NORCECA
tomará una decisión sobre sus dos puestos
disponibles en el Consejo, ya que la reunión
del Consejo regional es inminente. En lo
tocante al frente del desarrollo, se convino que
los Centros de Desarrollo debieran focalizarse
en el Voleibol de Masa y en el Voleibol de Playa
de 2009 y, si los requerimientos se vieran
satisfechos, la FIVB tomaría en consideración
la posibilidad de pagar gradualmente a los
entrenadores de los Centros. Y más aún, se
destinaría una provisión para alentar a las
Federaciones Nacionales a fin de que
participen y promocionen los Volley All
Festivals.
Como parte de las actividades de World Vision,
se propuso otorgar un premio a la Federación
Nacional que más haya mejorado en el ámbito
de cada una de las Confederaciones
Continentales. De acuerdo con lo sugerido por
el COI, se efectuará un estudio sobre la
creación de una Comisión de Atletas, a
presentar en la próxima reunión del Comité
Ejecutivo, que tendrá lugar en Fukuoka en el
mes de noviembre. Propuestas para cambios
en los medios de información, que incluyen
nuevos modelos de los formatos para la TV, con
un semanario de los momentos salientes del
Voleibol durante los eventos y también un
programa revisado de los momentos salientes
del Voleibol de Playa. Una pista coloreada de
Voleibol se someterá a pruebas durante
eventos de nivel nacional, así como se
probarán sistemas de líneas sensoriales,
micrófonos para los árbitros y se elegirá el
color de los uniformes de los mismos.

Of the five indoor Beach Volleyball facilities in
Norway, the biggest is Sandland. Located just
outside Stavanger, Sandland boasts five indoor
courts and two outdoor ones, and are used by pro
athletes and amateurs alike.

cuisine and energy. Selected as the European
Capital of Culture in 2008, Stavanger is home to
an annual jazz festival, the country’s best and
most varied culinary delights and an ambitious

and Wave-Power Capital of Europe. Fitting, then,
that energy giant ConocoPhillips is this year’s
sponsor of the SWATCH FIVB World
Championships.

Swords have long been associated with Norway
and the Vikings, and in recent years they have
grown in significance in Stavanger as well. In
addition to the 1983 unveiling of the giant Three
Swords Monument commemorating the Battle of
Hafrsfjord in 872, replica swords are also presented
to the winners of the SWATCH World Tour events
held in the city. The swords are so popular with the
players that they have arguably become the most
coveted prize on the entire SWATCH tour. Last
year’s winner, Todd Rogers of the United States,
summed it up best on his blog: “The sword really
was the driving force behind our victory. Both Phil
(Dalhausser) and I talked a lot about winning the
sword. Last year we saw (Brazil’s) Fabio with his
sword and were quite jealous. They are real
swords. Not sharpened thank goodness. Although
the tip of the sword is very sharp and could mess
someone up with a good thrust.”

6. Lucha a espadas
Desde hace mucho tiempo las espadas se asociaron a

aolo Nicolai devoted himself to Beach
Volleyball long before he became
successful at it. For him, the sport
offered new life experiences and a chance to
get to know the world better.
Born in Ortona on Aug. 6, 1988, Nicolai had a
brief fling with the indoor version of the sport
before settling on Beach Volleyball and quickly
becoming one of the most promising talents
on the international circuit.
With teammate Francesco Giontella, Nicolai is
a two-time world champion (U-19 in 2007 and
U-21 in 2008).
“I like the quality of human relations, the way
of facing life that you find in beach circles,”
Nicolai says. “In Volleyball I got some good
results – a tall setter is a rare commodity in
Italian gyms – but I preferred to go the way of
Beach Volleyball.
“I don’t know what got me into it at the
beginning, but once you are there you realize
you can be much more of a protagonist on the
court.” Nicolai’s first big success, gold at the

U-19 Men’s World Championship, came at home.
“In Modena, everybody was there – friends,
relatives, and my parents,” Nicolai says. “It was
really a great celebration, especially since we had
not been favored to win. We played each match
without too much pressure, taking things as they
came. But in the end we won it all.”
He admits things became more difficult following
the victory. “Much less fun, no question about it,”
he says. “Because last year we really felt the
pressure of being the favorites. Everyone knew that
and we felt that if we didn’t win the gold medal, the
whole season would have been seen as a defeat.
But at the end it was great all the same, because, in
addition to the technical difficulties, we had to
overcome the pressure as well.”
As Nicolai enters adulthood, the pressure and
responsibilities continue to become greater. In
addition to picking up a new teammate in Matteo
Varnier (Giontella is devoting himself to his studies),
Nicolai also has a demanding new platform on
which he competes: The SWATCH FIVB World Tour.
“I’ve got wonderful personal and professional
experiences behind me,” Nicolai says. “But I am
also well aware that this is the start of a new phase:

expedición se habría considerado como una
derrota.
Luego, al final, todo fue estupendo, porque
además de superar las dificultades técnicas
supimos desembarazarnos de la presión”.
Ahora Paolo se vuelve “grande”, cambia de
compañero (Matteo Varnier, porque Giontella se
dedica sólo a sus estudios).
“Llevo conmigo gran experiencia personal y
profesional. Pero también la convicción de que

We will have to wait a little longer before we can
see them in action, but the new crop of young
Beach Volleyball players are already raring to
go. This is the season for intensive training and
great concentration by the most promising young
athletes in world Beach Volleyball, who this year
take part in the SWATCH FIVB Youth World
Championships in Alanya, Turkey, from August
19-23. The FIVB, meanwhile, is in the process of
reprogramming the SWATCH FIVB Junior World
Championships, which had been scheduled for
Mexico but was unfortunately cancelled.
The young protagonists are sure to put on a
spectacular show, eager as they are to fight for
the right to be called 2009 world champions in an
FIVB event you can’t afford to miss. On the front
lines and under the spotlight, the boys who won
last year’s U-19 World Championship - Estonia’s
Kollo and Venno - are ready to continue their
way up the ladder. In the girls’ field, current U-19
champions Laboureur-Springer, from Germany,
will be hoping to win gold again, even though
they were challenged by Gestel-Braakman in the
race for the title in The Hague right down to the
last match of the event. These will probably be
the most watched young athletes in the next two
world events, even though you can never rule out
surprises and unexpected newcomers - a la Paolo
Nicolai in 2007.

tanto que la FIVB está en proceso de reprogramar los
Campeonatos Mundiales Juveniles SWATCH FIVB que
estaban anunciados en México, pero lamentablemente
cancelados. Queda garantizado el espectáculo de los
jóvenes protagonistas, dispuestos a luchar para conquistar
el título mundial de 2009, en una cita de la FIVB que de
ningún modo hay que perder.
En primera línea, y entre candilejas, aparecerán los jóvenes
que en el año pasado se impusieron en el campeonato
mundial Sub-19, esto es, la pareja de estonios Kollo-Venno,
dos sorpresas listas ya para proseguir en su crecimiento. En
campo femenino y con igual concepto, tratarán de hacerse
con un espacio importante las actuales campeonas sub
19 Laboureur- Spinger de Alemania, pese a que durante
la lucha por el título en La Haya revelaron cierta inquietud,
mientras duró el evento, debido al gran juego exhibido por
la pareja van Gestel-Braakman. Probablemente serán los
jóvenes citados más arriba quienes lograrán suscitar mayor
atención en los próximos eventos mundiales, si bien las
sorpresas y novedades podrían hallarse a la vuelta de la

Jizhong Wei, who entrusted her with this task,

an autocracy. We must open up to others and in
particular to the IOC and the other international
federations. We must work in harmony with them.
And that,” she continues, “is what I am doing.”
“Persisting in saying that we are always right and
that the others are always wrong is a position that
is neither tenable nor reasonable,” insisted
President Wei in speaking to the FIVB Board of
Administration in early April. Here again, a page

place in the ASOIF, the Association of Summer
Olympic International Federations, one of the
Olympic movement’s most fundamental
structures. The idea is to erase the somewhat
negative image projected at times by the FIVB in
all these areas. Subowo is devoting herself with
determination to this mission of renewing dialogue
with the highest authorities of international sports.
“There is such misery and misfortune, in particular
on our continent, Asia,” she explains, “that we
have the duty of doing all we can to educate,
assist, and – in the last result – bring back hope to
our youth. For this reason it is necessary to
promote the humanistic and pacifist ideals of the
Olympic ideal.” She becomes almost indignant
when she points out that eight countries that
participate regularly in the Olympic Games have
never sent women to take part. “And this is for
cultural and religious reasons, despite the
concessions made concerning athletic apparel to
favor Islamic
countries,” exclaims the woman who herself
comes from a mainly Islamic country.

A PASSION FOR ORCHIDS

Working on the IOC commissions to promote the
place of women in sports and for the protection of
the environment, this radiant 60-year-old
Indonesian manager affirms that she cannot
imagine realizing herself as a person without the
support of those around her – her family, her
children and grandchildren, and especially her
husband Atmos, an aeronautical engineer turned
banker. It was he who first took on high-level
responsibilities in the Indonesian federations of
swimming, basketball, and archery.
To respond to her many-faceted obligations,
Subowo manages her calendar in a strict fashion,
imposing on herself annual priorities of visiting,
one by one, the regional Olympic committees of
the 33 provinces of Indonesia. “It is not easy,
because our country, which has the world’s largest
Islamic population, is composed of a large number
of islands,” she explains. Her family first and
foremost, but also her foundation for the
preservation of orchids – a true passion – and for
painting “which serves to liberate the spirit a little,”
naturally have a place in her hectic schedule. It is a
healthy obligation that she forces herself to
respect. The Olympic Charter stipulates that each
member of the IOC is an ambassador of the
Olympic Movement to his or her own country, and
not vice versa. That is readily understood. But for
Subowo there is another question. There is a
second ambassadorship, since at the same time
she exercises the function of FIVB ambassador to
the IOC.

de cultura y de religión, a pesar de las
concesiones hechas en tema de atuendos a favor
de las deportistas de los países musulmanes”,
nos dice asombrada. Ella, ¡que nos llega de una
tierra importante del Islam!
UNA PASIÓN POR LAS ORQUÍDEAS
Activa en las comisiones del COI en cuanto al
lugar que ocupan las mujeres en el deporte y
respecto a la protección del entorno, la dirigente
de Indonesia, la pequeña sexagenaria radiante,
confiesa que no hubiera podido realizarse si no
hubiera sido por el apoyo de quienes la rodean, su
familia, sus hijos y sobre todo, su marido, Atmo,
un ingeniero aeronáutico convertido en banquero.
Por otra parte, él asumió también
responsabilidades muy altas en el ámbito de las
federaciones nacionales de natación, de
baloncesto y de tiro con arco de Indonesia.
Para poder hacer frente a todas sus obligaciones,
tan variadas, Rita Subowo maneja su agenda del
modo más estricto posible, imponiéndose como
prioridad anual el visitar, uno a uno, los comités
olímpicos regionales de las treinta y tres
provincias de Indonesia. “No es fácil, puesto que
nuestro país, el más poblado de los países
musulmanes, está constituido por muchísimas
islas”, comenta la Sra. Subowo.
Primero su familia, así como su fundación para
preservar orquídeas – auténtica pasión – y la
pintura “que sirve para liberar un poco el espíritu”,
hallan todos su lugar en el empleo del tiempo que
tiene a disposición. Se trata de una sana
obligación que ella se impuso.
La Carta Olímpica estipula que cada uno de los
miembros del COI, es el embajador del
Movimiento Olímpico en su país y no lo contrario.
Queda entendido. Pero para Rita Subowo hay algo
más. Se trata de una embajada doble, puesto que
ella ejerce al mismo tiempo el cargo de
embajadora de la FIVB en el COI.

 russia feted chesnokov as the “sports legend
of the century” in 2000, the same year he was
inducted into the volleyball hall of fame
skated and swam. But a problem presented itself early
on: Yuri quickly reached the height of 180cm while
remaining skinny and, to all appearances, anything but
athletic. He was even ashamed of his physique,
especially when around girls. For this reason he set out
with youthful enthusiasm to work on his muscles, and in
his effort demonstrated such unchildlike severity he
achieved his goals in record time.
Military Academy and Volleyball
The young Chesnokov received a gold-medal diploma
and entered the Kuybishev Military Engineering
Academy without having to undergo admissions exams.
In the Soviet period, the academy was one of the
foremost institutes for military training. Being a student
there was not only a mark of prestige, but also required
much hard work. The Academy was not geared to
training athletes but rather technical personnel for the
military. For this reason, it is not hard to imagine what
an effort it was for Yuri Chesnokov in the first few years
to conciliate volleyball with his studies. But soon the
young man had been called up to play on the army’s
senior volleyball team. Over the years, this team has
had different names, but it is now known worldwide as
CSKA. In 1955, in order to be able to prepare for his first
European Championship with the USSR national team,
Yuri applied for and was granted exoneration from
attending classes. At that time he had already won, with
the top army team, his first gold medal as national
champion – and that without abandoning his studies.
Two years later, and again for the first time in his sports
career, he was named best player in the national
championships. He also won a gold medal at the
Academy, this time for the commitment and dedication
he gave to his studies. For the next two years he tried
to juggle the large workload imposed by his military
specialization and top-level volleyball. But, despite his
capacity for organizing rigid daily work schedules and for
carrying them out to the letter, in the end he realized
that it was an impossible endeavor. He had to make a
choice. After long reflection, weighing all the pros and
cons, he opted for volleyball. The decision would allow
Chesnokov to go on to become one of the great
sportsmen of his day, an athlete Russia would fete as a
“Sports Legend of the Century” in 2000, the same year
he was inducted into the Volleyball Hall of Fame in
Holyoke, Massachusetts.

every move, adding nothing superfluous. But I would

en el equipo de seniores de Voleibol del ejército. Con el paso
de los años, ese equipo ha jugado con nombres diferentes,
pero en la actualidad es conocido a nivel mundial como
CSKA. En 1955, con vistas a la preparación para jugar su
primer Campeonato Europeo con la selección nacional de la

con el Voleibol de alto nivel. Pero no obstante su capacidad
de organizar planes estrictos de trabajo diarios y cumplir con
ellos perfectamente, al final se dio cuenta de que era un
esfuerzo imposible de sostener. Tenía que tomar una
decisión. Tras largas reflexiones, considerando todo el pro y el
contra, optó por el Voleibol. Esa decisión permitiría a
Chesnokov llegar a ser uno de los deportistas más grandes
de su época, un atleta que Rusia clasificó como “La Leyenda
Deportiva del Siglo” en el año 2000, el mismo año en que se

when something unexpected happens. Chesnokov had

a style of play that was wicked – in a sporting sense –
and at the same time refined. His was the polished
virtuosity of the finest artist, of a man who knows what
he is worth and, if you like, who is sure of his own
predestination – a predestination that can be
summarized in a few short words: to win at all times,
everywhere. Yuri was always impeccable, his sports
outfit perfectly matched and without a single hair out of
place. It even seemed that the dust didn’t settle on him
when he was playing on dirt courts.

Tokyo 1964, the left hand challenge

Volleyball became an Olympic sport in 1964 in Tokyo.
Adversaries considered the USSR national men’s team
to be one of the pretenders to the gold, but there was a
lot they were unaware of, such as the nervous
atmosphere that gripped the team. And there were
good reasons for this – illness and injuries befalling the
best players, to the point where it was not clear
whether or not they were going to be able to recover
their form for the Olympics, conflicts with the coach and
the more senior players, including irreplaceable team
captain Yuri Chesnokov, for whom these Games
represented the first and only possibility of reaching the
podium, and the rather cool attitude of the sports
officials toward the team. After reaching Tokyo, the
USSR team played a training match against the
Bulgarian team and lost 3-2. By mere chance, and in any
case most unfortunately, attending that match were the
USSR’s top sports authorities. The tacit verdict of the
managers was like a brand on the forehead: Of all the
Soviet national sports teams, the men’s volleyball team
was the weakest and there was no hope that it could
succeed in Tokyo. But the athletes were focused only
on victory – all of them, from the first to the last. I
believe the role that Chesnokov played in this extreme,
and at times seemingly impossible, mobilization of the
team was decisive. By first beating their principal
adversaries Romania and Czechoslovakia, the Soviet
team would then go on to win the gold medal. If that
wasn’t impressive enough, in the match against
Czechoslovakia Chesnokov played with only one hand.
Several days earlier, while playing against the
Netherlands, he injured his right elbow, resulting in it
swelling to the size of an egg, which the doctors had to
continually drain with a syringe. The extreme pain
persisted night and day, and when the doctors were
attending to his injury in the locker room, Chesnokov’s
face screwed up into such a grimace of suffering that
nobody else could stand the sight and had to leave. And
so it was that Chesnokov was forced to hit the ball only
with his left hand, as his right arm was totally
incapacitated. The Soviet team played the last match of
the Olympic tournament against Brazil, winning 3-1 to
officially become champions. Sitting in the locker room,
Chesnokov was a champion Volleyball player before
becoming a coaching legend with the National Team
they began to feel like themselves again. The sports
managers went in to congratulate them – first the most
important, then the second in line, followed by the third
in importance, and so on, as is usually the case in such
circumstances. The conversation was excellent and
correct, if we remember that this was in the middle of
the 60s in the last century, when the USSR proceeded
according to its own rules and was separated from a
good part of the world by the Iron Curtain. The
authorities said: “Well done! What do you need? How
can we help you?” The silence that greeted these
questions was worth a thousand words: it was precisely
in such moments that, for champions, questions were
resolved relating to possession of goods that were all
too scarce in Russia. It fell to Chesnokov, captain and
leader of the team, to answer. The pause of silence
seemed interminable. As Yuri Borisovich tells it, in that
moment he suddenly felt terribly offended – because
just a few days earlier the same authorities had all but
ignored him and his team, and if they asked for anything
it might be construed as a kind of greed, as if the
players were fighting not for their country’s honor, but
for heaven knows what. Staring at the laces of his
volleyball shoes, laces that were forever torn and hence
tied with an endless number of knots, and then looking
at the shoes of his teammates which were in a similar
condition, Chesnokov blurted out a sentence that was
genial in its simplicity and clarity: “We need good

cuando jugaba en pistas sucias.
tokio 1964, el desafío de la mano

El Voleibol se convirtió en un deporte Olímpico en Tokio, en
1964. Los adversarios consideraban a la selección nacional
masculina de la URSS como a una de las pretendientes al
oro, si bien hubiera cantidad de ellos que no estaban bien
enterados de todo, al igual del hecho que desconocían la
atmósfera nerviosa que entonces atenazaba al equipo. Y había
buenas razones para ello – enfermedades y lesiones caían
sobre los mejores jugadores, hasta el punto en que no estaba
claro aún si es que podrían recuperar su forma para las
Olimpiadas. A ello había que añadir conflictos con el
entrenador y los jugadores veteranos, incluyendo al
insustituible capitán del equipo Yuri Chesnokov, para quien
aquellos Juegos representaban la primera y única posibilidad
de subir al podio y sin olvidar además, la actitud, más bien
fría, de los oficiales de deportes respecto al equipo. Recién
llegado a Tokio, el equipo de URSS jugó un partido de
entrenamiento contra el equipo de Bulgaria, perdiendo por
3-2. Y lo que era peor, asistieron al partido las autoridades
deportivas de la URSS. El veredicto tácito de los directivos fue
como un leñazo en la frente. De todos los equipos nacionales
soviéticos, el equipo de Voleibol masculino era el más débil y
no tenía chance alguno de poder ganar en Tokio.
Pero los atletas estaban focalizados únicamente sobre la
victoria – todos ellos desde el primero hasta el último. Creo
que el papel jugado por Chesnokov en esa extrema – y a
veces aparentemente imposible movilización del equipo – fue
decisivo. Para empezar, batiendo a sus principales adversarios
Rumania y Checoslovaquia, lo que les llevó por el camino de
la victoria de la medalla de oro. Y si eso no fuera
suficientemente impresionante, durante el partido contra

por 3-1 y llegando así a ser oficialmente
campeones. Sentados en el vestuario, los
componentes del equipo comenzaron a sentirse
ellos mismos nuevamente. Los directivos deportivos entraron
para congratularse con los jugadores – primero los más
importantes, luego los segundos en importancia, seguidos
por los terceros y así sucesivamente, tal y como ocurre en
tales circunstancias. La conversación fue excelente y correcta,
si consideramos que ello ocurrió en medio de los años ’60 del
siglo pasado, cuando la URSS vivía según sus propias reglas y
estaba separada de buena parte del mundo por la cortina de
hierro. Las autoridades dijeron: “¡Muy bien! ¿Que necesitáis?
¿Cómo podemos ayudaros? El silencio que acogió dichas
preguntas valía mil palabras: era precisamente en tales
momentos cuando, para los campeones, ya estaban
resueltas las preguntas referentes a la posesión de cosas que

descended on the locker room. Nobody had understood
what on earth those darned shoelaces had to do with
anything, when it was all about something else ... The
players were promised their shoelaces, the best in
existence. When the managers had left, Chesnokov had
to respond at length to the questions of his teammates.
And, as can be imagined, there were many. A short
time thereafter, when a balance sheet of the Soviet
athletes’ participation at the Tokyo Olympics was drawn
up, their victory was naturally compensated in adequate
fashion, with honors of every sort possible.
Nevertheless, for a long time the players on that gold-
medal winning Olympic team continued to remember
those wretched shoelaces. Forty-one years after the
memorable “shoelace” affair, Chesnokov smilingly
explained to me: “I don’t know what got into me then,
but my teammates didn’t understand me fully.” This is
an episode rarely noted in the biography of Chesnokov.
Surely it is not the most unique, but still one that helps
to judge his character. Yuri Chesnokov has never been
unfaithful to his prickly character (that is, to himself) –
never on any occasion whatsoever. Many of those who
were close to him had a difficult time of it, irrespective
of the role and the position that Chesnokov held at the Chesnokov’s bronze bust is among the sports legends

Montreal, the last

Polish ball
Twelve years after Tokyo, Chesnokov
almost became an Olympic
champion for the second time, this
time as coach of the USSR men’s
team. But, as we all know,
“almost” doesn’t count. At the
1976 Montreal Games, in the final
match against Poland, the Soviet
team experienced a real tragedy
when it failed to wrap up a match
that was all but in the bag. That
same year Chesnokov was to
make a difficult decision – that of
stepping down as coach of the
USSR national team and of
CSKA. But this came later. In
the meantime, in that moment,
without taking his eyes off the
court, Chesnokov seemed to have hypnotized the ball,
which inexorably went out of bounds after touching, by
some strange chance, one of the Russian players.
Those who know professional sports realize that a
single unfortunate error can radically change the course
of any match and a team can suddenly pass from near
victory to defeat. After such losses the blame is usually
placed on the coach. However, there is usually no guilty
party, because nothing in the world can insure you
against chance. And on that day – a black day for
Chesnokov and for our team – chance played on the
side of the adversaries. It was the fourth set in the final
of the men’s Olympic tournament. The USSR national
team was beating Poland 2-1 and needed only one
point to win the gold, when luck seemed to be coming
their way. The ball flew into the Soviet team’s side of
the court directly at Volodja Chernyshev (an excellent
player, unfortunately now deceased). He was in the
fourth zone and leaped to hit the ball that was
seemingly on its way out of bounds. Nerves were tense
and the players all realized that this was it. Half the
team, forgetting everything else, yelled to Volodja: “Hit
it!” The other half shouted “Out!” At the last minute,
Chernyshev drew back his hand to allow the ball to pass
out of bounds, but the ball had other plans, grazing the
player first ... We should give the Poles their due.
Evidently, that single episode inspired in them new
strength and they went on to win the final. Chesnokov
blamed himself and only himself – he had not been able
to orient his players in a decisive fifth set. But today I
believe that another force was at work. Quite simply, at
that moment fate decided that Yuri Chesnokov should
remain in the history of world volleyball primarily as a
great player who had conquered the Olympic heights,
and only afterwards as a coach who had not succeeded
in repeating that feat. One last thing: The work of a
world-famous sports manager is not as visible as that of
an athlete or a coach. Chesnokov dedicated 30 years to
it – two-fifths of his life. And the very fact that he
remained so long in the group of leaders of modern
volleyball proves his managerial and civilian merits
better than any words could describe. This is a man
with a character that is anything but easy to deal with,
but one totally devoted to volleyball.

manifestación de codicia, como si los jugadores lucharan no
por el honor de su nación, sino por algo que solo el cielo lo
sabe. Observando los cordones de sus zapatillas de
Voleibol, que estaban llenos de nudos y mirando después a
las de sus compañeros, que estaban en condiciones
idénticas, Chesnokov espetó una frase que era genial por
su sencillez y claridad; “Necesitamos buenos cordones
para las zapatillas, estos se rompen demasiado a menudo”.
Un silencio total invadió al vestuario. Nadie había
comprendido qué es lo que tenían que ver aquellos
malditos cordones con algo, cuando todo concernía a cosas
diferentes… Se prometieron a los jugadores sus cordones,
los mejores existentes. Una vez que los directivos salieron,
Chesnokov tuvo que responder a todas las preguntas de
sus compañeros. Que, como podemos imaginar, eran
muchas. Poco tiempo después, cuando se redactó la hoja
del balance de la participación de los atletas soviéticos en
los Juegos Olímpicos de Tokio, su victoria, como es natural,
fue debidamente compensada, con toda clase de honores.
A pesar de ello, durante mucho tiempo, los jugadores del
equipo que ganó la medalla de oro siguieron recordando
aquellos malditos cordones. Transcurridos cuarenta y un

Doce años después de Tokio, Chesnokov casi logró ser
campeón olímpico por segunda vez. En este caso en calidad
de entrenador del equipo masculino de la URSS. Pero como
bien se sabe, “casi” no cuenta. En los Juegos de Montreal
de 1976, en el partido de la final contra Polonia, el equipo
soviético experimentó una tragedia real al no conseguir el
hacerse con un partido que era todo menos fácil. En ese
mismo año Chesnokov se halló frente al hecho de tomar
una decisión difícil – cesar como entrenador del equipo
nacional de la URSS y del CSKA. Pero eso llegó más tarde.
Mientras tanto, en aquel momento, sin sacar sus ojos de la
pista, parecía que Chesnokov había hipnotizado el balón, que
inexorablemente salía del campo tras haber tocado, por
extraña combinación, uno de los jugadores rusos. Aquellos
que conocen los deportes profesionales saben que un solo
error desafortunado puede cambiar radicalmente el curso de
cualquier partido y que un equipo puede pasar
repentinamente de estar cerca de la victoria a una derrota.

embargo, generalmente no hay culpables porque no hay
nada en este mundo que pueda asegurarte contra la mala
suerte. Y en aquel día - día negro para Chesnokov y para
nuestro equipo – la suerte pasó por la casa de los
adversarios. Era en el cuarto set del torneo Olímpico
masculino. El equipo nacional de la URSS estaba ganando
contra Polonia por 2-1 y sólo necesitaba un punto para ganar
el oro cuando la suerte comenzó a seguir otro camino. El
balón voló al lado del equipo soviético directamente donde
estaba Volodja Chernyshev (jugador excelente,
lamentablemente difunto). El estaba en la cuarta zona y
trató de golpear el balón que al parecer estaba yendo fuera.

Evidentemente, ese episodio, único, les confirió fuerzas
nuevas y así se fueron a ganar la final. Chesnokov dio la
culpa de todo a él y solo a él – porque no supo orientar a
sus jugadores en el quinto set decisivo. Pero hoy creo que
hubo otra fuerza que entró en juego. Simplemente, en aquel
momento el hado decidió que Yuri Chesnokov debía quedar
en la historia del mundo del Voleibol primero, como un gran
jugador que conquistó las alturas olímpicas y después como
un entrenador que no tuvo éxito al repetir ese hecho. Última
cosa. La labor de un director deportivo famoso en el mundo
no es tan visible como la de un atleta o la de un entrenador.
Chesnokov dedicó 30 años a ello – dos quintas partes de su
vida. Y el hecho es que uno que quedó por tanto tiempo en
el grupo de líderes del Voleibol moderno, evidencia sus
meritos directivos y civiles mucho mejor que lo que las
palabras pudieran hacer. Es un hombre con un carácter que
no es fácil de tratar, pero que está completamente dedicado
al Voleibol.

tars of the stage and screen have
always been attracted to other
pursuits in life, and sport is no
exception. But dabbling in hobbies and being
considered an expert in your outside
interests is another thing entirely.
Enter Mohammad Reza Golzar, a 35-year-old
Iranian movie and television star who recently
became a physical trainer of Super League
team Erteashate Sanati Tehran (Industrial
Vibration Tehran), and in so doing, has
attracted an unprecedented but entirely
welcome amount of attention to the lowly
first-division club. Fans and journalists alike
have shown up in droves to see Golzar on the
sidelines with the team; so many, in fact, that
his first match on the bench was a sellout.
Golzar has little other Volleyball credentials
other than his professed love of the sport and
the fact that he periodically suits up for a
team of actors and artists that tours Iran
playing top professional sides in charity
matches. His presence with Erteashate Sanati
hasn’t helped it much in the win column,
however. The team finished the 2008/2009
season in 10th place, two points off the
bottom of the table. But results are only part
of the equation. The club’s management and
the Iranian Volleyball Federation are delighted
that the actor was able to single-handedly
drum up so much interest in the sport. Which
begs the question: Will more stars follow suit
in 2009/2010?

han visto atraídas por otros aspectos en su
existencia, aparte de su labor artística, y el
deporte no constituye una excepción. Pero recurrir a
pasatiempos y considerarse un experto en los
intereses fuera de la profesión, son dos cosas
distintas. Entra en escena Mohammad Reza Golzar,
una estrella de 35 años del cine y de la televisión iraní
que recientemente se convirtió en el entrenador del
equipo de la Super Liga Erteashate Sanati Tehran
(Vibración Industrial Teherán), dando lugar a un
aumento, sin precedentes, del interés concentrado en
ese humilde club de primera división, interés acogido,
como es natural, a brazos abiertos. Un gentío, tanto de
aficionados como de periodistas, se reunió para ver a
Golzar en las líneas laterales junto con su equipo y
tanto fue así que en su primer partido, estando él
sentado en el banquillo, se agotaron los billetes de
entrada Las credenciales de Golzar relativas al
Voleibol, no iban más allá que su pasión por el deporte
y por el hecho de que periódicamente formaba parte
de un equipo de actores que daban vueltas por Irán
jugando a nivel profesional en partidos con finalidades
benéficas. Su presencia en Erteashate Sanati no fue
de mucha ayuda en cuanto a victorias, sin embargo, el
equipo finalizó la temporada de 2008/2009 en el 10º
lugar, dos puntos por encima del fondo del tablero.
Pero los resultados son solo una parte de la ecuación.
Los directivos del club y la Federación iraní de Voleibol

ess than a year ago, Marcio Araujo and
Fabio Luiz Magalhaes claimed the biggest
success of their professional lives – silver at
the Beijing Olympics.
The Brazilians followed this up with triumph in
their personal lives as their partners became
pregnant. Marcio’s wife Renata is expecting their
second daughter Melissa after 8-year-old Mirella in
May. Fabio’s partner Barbara is expecting their first
son, Joao Vitor, who may be born during the
SWATCH FIVB World Championships in late June.
Marcio is already planning a Beach Volleyball
dynasty: “The most important thing is that the
baby arrives healthy to bring more happiness to
our home, but I would love having a team at
home, like Maria Clara and Carolina Salgado.
Mirella is too young to play, but she has what it
takes for sports. She loves swimming, ballet and
bikes.” Fabio, on his baby’s potential delivery
date, says, “Marcio calculated it better than I did.
I had thought about it, but the best thing to do is
let things happen. I ask Marcio and friends many
questions about being a father. They say that a
son gives you a lot of work but is the best thing
in the world. I did not get anything in my life
without working hard, so it will not be a novelty
to me.”

su hijo, dice, “Marcio la calculó mejor que yo,
pero lo mejor que hay que hacer es dejar que
las cosas sigan su curso. He hecho a Marcio y a
otros amigos un sinfín de preguntas respecto al
hecho de ser padre. Ellos dicen que un hijo te
aporta un montón de trabajo, pero que es lo
más bello del mundo. No he conseguido nada
en mi vida sin trabajar duro, de modo que para
mi no será una novedad”.

here was something of a family flavour
to the recent Women’s Champions
League Final Four in Perugia. The local
team were defending their crown but with
an almost completely different lineup to last
year. One familiar face for the locals – and
media – in the Final Four was legendary
Russian setter Irina Kirillova, a Perugia player
three years ago but now starring for Dinamo
Moscow. As her husband, Giovanni Caprara,
is coach of Perugia a mouthwatering “family
clash” was on the cards.
Unfortunately it didn’t materialize as Perugia
suffered a disappointing defeat against
compatriots Bergamo in the semifinal. A
number of controversial decisions from the
referee in that match had former Russian
Women’s coach Caprara storming off the
court in a furious mood. Kirilova was also to
be disappointed. The final came down to
Moscow vs. Bergamo and the Italians won
their sixth title in 10 years. The 43-year-old
Kirilova may have missed out on the MVP
crown, which went to Serena Ortolani, but
won the Best Setter award, leading Bergamo
captain Francesca Piccinini to comment, “I
think Irina will be a grandma and she will still
be playing.”

Y puesto que su marido, Giovanni Caprara es el
entrenador del equipo de Perugia, se preanunciaba
un “encontronazo familiar” mediático atrayente.
Lamentablemente la cosa no cristalizó, ya que el
club de Perugia se vio apeado de la semifinal por sus
compatriotas del equipo de Bérgamo. Hubo una
cantidad de decisiones del árbitro en ese partido,
objeto de discusión, que dieron lugar a que Caprara,
entrenador antaño del equipo femenino ruso,
abandonase la pista furiosamente. También Kirillova
se vio decepcionada. La final enfrentó al club de
Moscú contra el de Bérgamo y las italianas ganaron
su sexto título en 10 años. Irina Kirillova, con sus 43
años, perdió su corona de Jugadora Más Valuable,
que ganó Serena Ortolani, pero obtuvo el premio de
Mejor Pasadora, lo que hizo que Francesca Piccinini,
estrella del equipo de Bérgamo, comentara: “Creo
que Irina será abuela y seguirá jugando aún”.

he party nights on Bermuda’s streets
are often described as a melting pot
where people from all over the world
converge to have fun. This is a pretty apt
description of the Bermuda women’s team
as well. A number of different languages are
spoken by the players chattering away into
their cellphones. Most of the players are in
their 30s but play with a teenage enthusiasm
under the guidance of Jonathan Gazzard, the
Bermudian coach of the winning team of
NORCECA-A, a recent first-round tournament
of the 2010 FIVB Women’s World
Championship. Five different nationalities are
represented: five Canadians (Stacey Dorush,
Chantal Davis, Elisabeth Rae, Lianne
Leonardi and Kristin Thomas), four
Bermudians (Kimberley Burns, Juanita Blee,
Lisa LeBlanc and Wendy Gazzard) plus
Brazilian Giovanna Pacheco, Mexican Emma
Vacas and Slovakian Katarina Carnicka.
All are Bermuda residents, have 9-to-5 jobs
and half are mothers. They pay part of their
traveling expenses through fund-raising
activities and, very often, need to dip into
their own pockets for extra expenses.
“Bermuda is a small community and as soon
as somebody with a Volleyball background
arrives in the island word spreads,” says
Gazzard. “We welcome them and invite
them to join us.”

que recurrir a sus propios bolsillos para hacer
frente a los gastos extra. “Bermuda es una
pequeña comunidad y tan pronto como llega
alguien perteneciente al mundo del Voleibol, la
noticia se propaga enseguida”, dice Gazzard. “Por
nuestra parte le damos la bienvenida y le
invitamos a unirse a nosotros”.
