Learning

How can I make my learning meaningful?

1. Selection
use prior knowledge to help you identify most important information
Review objectives, summaries Read R d assigned i d reading di Be alert to lecturers signals e.g., coming back to idea or relating to other ideas

13

2. Organise Organise information into meaningful units of information

Create outlines Create concept maps y g similarities/ differences Identifying

3. Integrate make the information meaningful and memorable by creating links with prior knowledge / or modify existing knowledge.
Question new information Think about and answer questions Think about implications Generate own examples

Feedback from students

It is a useful resource in the process of intense learning in the environment, which University education presses upon students. In other words, it expanded the noodles in my brain. because it was probably what got me through the course, course by motivating me to complete doable tasks by a certain date, it taught me to keep on top with class work.

Mastering Biology: Online tool, log-in details should have been emailed to you over the weekend:
Look at lecture guide guide, page I 4 Completion of Mastering Bio activities = 4% of final grade

Learning Styles
Different things affect your ability to learn new things Preferred learning styles include:
Visual Auditory Kinaesthetic or tactile

On-line learning - Using Cecil (UoA Learning Management System)

Web Based - available 24 / 7 Features include calendar, notices, marks, email, discussion board Resources R lecture l t summaries, i animations, on-line quizzes, worksheets

20

You will learn about Cecil in the first lab for Biosci 101 OR You can attend a Library course Uni IT Essentials go to http://www.library.auckland.ac.nz/boo king/

21

What is DELNA?

DELNA is a quick n dirty free health check of your language skills b f before you begin b i the th year. You will do this in lab one

22

BIOSCI 101 Class Reps

We need to elect one Class Representative for BIOSCI 101 to liaise between students and the lecturers This involves representing your classmates at five meetings during the year (so you need to be doing another BIOSCI course in Semester 2)

BIOSCI 101 Class Reps (contd)

If you would like to be a class rep, email or hand in a brief paragraph about yourself to Brendon Dunphy during the first week of the semester (include some contact details). Include a photo if you wish. b.dunphy@auckland.ac.nz We will set up an electronic election in Cecil which will be part of the exercise you complete in Laboratory 1 in the second week.

So whats the basis of biological diversity? What is complexity and how is it generated?

Preparation for Lecture 1

I will be assuming you have read:
th the synopsis i of f Lecture L t 1 in i the th Lecture L t Guide G id the relevant section of your textbook (especially if this material is new for you)

In particular you should arrive already familiar with the appearance pp and functions of the organelles found in eukaryotic cells
