Woodmont's Future by Rev. Clay Stauffer, Senior Minister

Do you think about the future? I certainly do. I think about what God is calling our church to be and do in the years ahead. We have a wonderful seventy year history, a promising future, committed leadership, and a powerful mission statement: "Growing disciples of Christ by Seeking God, Sharing Love, and Serving Others." We live this out as a church and as individuals in so many ways, yet we should never stop thinking about how we can expand and grow our ministries and programs. This past summer, in the midst of discussing the need to renovate and enhance the entrance to our preschool, the Woodmont Board decided to go ahead and commission a Strategic Planning Committee to look at future ministries as they relate to the needs of our entire campus. This group has now been meeting for three months under the leadership of Cyril Stewart who is the Chair Elect of our congregation. Cyril has given decades of leadership and sacrifice to this church. As you might expect, the conversation so far has covered a variety of areas but the topics that seem to surface the most include the fact that we have a very overcrowded South Hall (housing The Nashville Food Project, AA, Room In the Inn, etc.), a need to enhance the preschool entrance, the ongoing challenge of multiple uses for Drowota Hall, the possibility of a Chapel, and our need for more multi-purpose space. It will be hard for us to simply maintain our current ministries in South Hall given the limited space. The entrance to our preschool is not up to par with the rest of our campus. Drowota Hall currently serves as a worship space for the Bridge, a fellowship hall, a gym, and a venue for many other events. A chapel in the round was a part of Woodmonts previous master plan and many still believe it would be nice to have. There are also discussions about future uses of Campbell West (The Parsonage), which is where my family currently lives. This list is certainly not exhaustive but these are the things that seem to come up over and over again. The Strategic Planning Committee is actively seeking the input of the congregation. We want feedback and ideas from the members. Anything that we do in the future at Woodmont needs to be the will of the Woodmont membership. There is a brief electronic survey that you are invited to fill out. To access this survey, you can either enter or click on the following link: http://tinyurl.com/strategicplanningsurvey. The members of the Committee are listed to the right so feel free to talk to or contact any of them. In forming the committee, we intentionally tried to find a mix of both long term members with institutional memory and newer members who bring a fresh perspective. We are certainly not in a hurry to get something done, but we do acknowledge that there are needs that must be addressed. Healthy churches are always looking to the future. We must be thankful for what we have accomplished over the years but always open to new ideas and possibilities. The words of the Apostle Paul in writing to the Corinthians hold true: "According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation and someone else is building on it. Each builder must choose with care how to build on it. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one that has been laid; that foundation is Jesus Christ." (I Corinthians 3:10-11)

Blessings,

Dear Woodmont by Farrell Mason, Minister of Family Life & Pastoral Care
Dear Woodmont, doubts, and I'm infamous for believing that I am the CEO of my life instead of God. I want to meet the world with the noble part of my being, but I'm afraid the world gets a lesser version of the "Farrell" God created me to be. I think it's why I've always been drawn to St. Peter. First, because he was far from saintly in the beginning, just plain old Simon, the fisherman. But Jesus saw the potential of his noble soul and renamed him Cephas "the Rock" Peter.

We live in a culture that encourages perfection. Or at least the ruse of perfection. Thanks to Facebook, Instagram, and all the other virtual stages, we can present to the world a version of ourselves and our lives that make others drool. We can put up pictures of our kids beaming with angelic smiles and perfectly tied grosgrain ribbons, our son scoring the game's winning hockey goal, dreamy, The Bible is not a fan of airbrushing. The Peter we find in the sun-tanned family vacations, and gourmet dinners that would make Michelin-starred chefs envious. All things appear as pure Gospels was stubborn, self-absorbed, unfaithful, non-inclusive, and he flat out denied God, not once, but three times. Peter was bliss on Facebook, courtesy of the airbrush reality we live in. imperfect, clumsy in his faith and yet Jesus never stopped I wonder...when was the last time we considered putting up a believing in him. So there's hope for all of us! picture of our "real" lives? You know the ones where the two Holy Rollers make me nervous. You know the ones who have year old is running around the house like a crazed ape, and we lose our temper. Or the picture of your child's face, heart-gutted, all the answers and walk around as if they've already received when he didn't make the hockey team. Or how about a picture of their halo. Does the title, Pharisee, come to mind? I am much that dinner you fixed starring Kraft Mac & Cheese and pizza more comfortable with the likes of David, Peter, Saul, and Mary Magdalene...real people with imperfections and fragile faiths. It's pockets? darn hard to meet the world with a pure heart, to think of others I worry about our authenticity. What do we really gain from before yourself and your needs, to forgive, to keep offering up hope to the world, to be faithful to God and LOVE before airbrushing away the imperfections of our lives? anything else, and to welcome the pinch of sacrifice in our lives for God. Thankfully, God never asked for perfection, only Do we airbrush our faith too? authenticity. Like Peter, when we stumble in faith, we get back This past Sunday I wrote a communion meditation where I up and try again. confessed that I was clumsy (I am the one who managed to sprain To be authentic and worthy to bear God's holy image, we both ankles within the same week and had to wear my Tretorns to the prom!). But what I was really talking about was my must admit our imperfections and clumsiness in faith. No clumsiness in faith. I want to be a person on this planet that I can airbrushing allowed! We are in this together! The reward is love. admire. More importantly, that God can admire. But so often I Live in Hope, Farrell miss the mark. If I am authentic, no airbrushing, then you can't miss my imperfections. I struggle with pride, envy, forgiveness,

Story by Carla Schooler, Minister of Jr. High Youth

I am a story addict. I love a good story in any form. I love good fiction, good television, good movies, and good songwriting. For me, the best stories are the ones that make me feel like I have been inserted into the narrative. When I start to feel like the characters are my friends and I just want to keep reading or watch them succeed, that's how I know it's a good story. This is one of the reasons I love Comic Cons, costumes and Halloween! I get the chance to see which stories are affecting those around me; super heroes, pirates, princesses and movie characters. You can see from my picture this week that I dressed as one of my favorite characters, Doctor Who!
Like I said, I'm a story addict and my favorite stories of all are the real ones. I love that I get to be part of so many people's stories but most importantly I love to learn another person's story. Where did they come from? What have been their struggles and successes? What are they passionate about? I am convinced that if I can have enough time to learn your story and share a little of mine with you then we can find common ground no matter what our differences! This is why I love youth ministry! I get to learn each student's story and we become part of each other's narrative. There are usually only a few degrees of separation between our differences and our similarities and one of my great passions is to help teens understand that there is always common ground. We all have a story, there is a reason we all tick the way we do and every person's story is worth being a part of. As my Halloween inspiration once said: "We're all stories in the end. Just make it a good one, eh?" ~ Doctor Who ~Carla

Pumpkin Patch Thank You

Thanks to everyone who worked a shift, baked bread, unloaded, and cleaned up this year's Pumpkin Patch. Together we raised $6,287.00 for the upcoming mission trip to Guatemala! Since our last mission trip to Guatemala in 2011, we have raised a grand total of $18,650.60 from the Pumpkin Patch (2011, 2012, and 2013 sales), which means a mission trip scholarship of more than $500 per student. Great work, Woodmont!

Queen of the Pumpkin Patch

Please join us in thanking Cindy Walker for all of her hard work heading up this year's Pumpkin Patch. Cindy spent countless hours organizing the pumpkin delivery, shifts, bread, money, and cleanup. We couldn't have done it without her!

Sponsor Spotlight
We have 14 amazing youth sponsors signed up to lead the youth group this year. Please join us in thanking our youth sponsors as they give their time and talents to the 6th-12th grade youth in our church. This week, please take some extra time to celebrate and get to know Caroline McDonald. Caroline is back home in Nashville after six years away and is excited to be a part of the youth group. She grew up going to Vine Street Christian Church, and began simultaneously attending both Woodmont and Vine Street's youth group events her freshmen year of high school. (Lots of youth group love!) She currently works at Sony/ATV and also enjoys yoga, running, and writing for a music magazine.

This past summer, the Woodmont Board commissioned a Strategic Planning Committee to talk about the future, our hopes and dreams, as well as our facility needs and challenges. Over the past few months, Cyril Stewart and the Strategic Planning Committee have been actively meeting on a monthly basis. The discussions have been exciting and energizing.
