Megans blurb for the NCU elections:

My name is Megan Tran and I'd like to apply for the position of first year rep on the Nutrition Course Union. What would hopefully make me a great first year rep is my drive and passion to be active in school. Throughout my four years at Riverdale Collegiate Institute I was a very active and involved student. I was apart of the Girls' Athletic Association for three years ( you have to apply in grade nine and get an interview to be apart of it the following year) where for my grade twelve year I was Audio Visual Rep, my role was to create videos and slideshows for assemblies and other events such as the end of the year sports slide show. Being apart of Free the Children helped me gain leadership skills where I worked my way up from being the grade 9 rep to communications officer for two years and finally I was president last year. There I was able to experience first hand how to run successful meetings and lead others who were also apart of the club. Last year was the biggest turnout from members in my four years and was by far the most successful year apart of Free the Children despite being cut off part way through the year from bill 115. I'd like to think that it was a huge accomplishment. I am also a team player and I have experience working in group settings. I was apart of the swim team for four years where I was senior female mvp in 2012 and I also started playing ultimate frisbee which is a huge team sport. I have already taken initiative to become involved in my university by signing up for the Dragon Boating club, which I am very excited for, and I will be trying out for Torontula ( U of T's womens frisbee team, Ryerson doesn't have a team so U of T is open to neighbouring schools). Being able to be the first year rep for the Nutrition Course Union is an absolute pleasure and it would really help me get immersed more into the course itself as well as meet others in upper years. What I would also bring to the table is my positive attitude and readiness to be working for the club to make it the best year possible!

Past Events
1. Orientation + Parade & Picnic We started the year off welcoming our first year nutrition students with a graffiti party and an amazing race. Music, good food, and awesome frosh bags topped off this fun event that almost 100 students attended! Later, we dazzled everyone with our beautiful School of Nutrition T-Shirts and army of balloons at the Parade & Picnic. 2. Book Sale Our next event was all about keeping money in your pockets. The NCU book sale, where over 75 textbooks were sold, made the task of buying and selling books a breeze! 3. Tri-Mentoring Mixer Our first big event of the school year was a perfect chance to meet other nutrition students, and give back to your school. Almost 70 people joined us for karaoke, delicious food, games, and awesome prizes provided by the NCU, School of Nutrition, and TriMentoring Program. The Tri-Mentoring Mixer was definitely a highlight of this year! 4. Yoga with BeWell Students had the chance to stretch away their stress with this fun event provided by BeWell and NCU.

This past September 2013, CDAR had its first successful Meet & Greet, where new volunteer members had a chance to learn more about CDAR and CDA from a special guest speaker, Joan Patch, who is from the CDA GTA Regional Leadership Centre. CDAR will be holding the November Clothesline Donation event on November 4 to 8th, 2013. This event will be held by CDAR in support of Canadian Diabetes Association. Gently used clothes, shoes, jewelry, small electronics, and toys will be accepted to help fund diabetes research, resources, and towards funding camp programs for kids living with diabetes. Sustainability in Food Service Event

The CAFP Ryerson Sustainability in Food Service Event that took place on October 29th had a fantastic turnout! We had three amazing speakers who love food and are passionate about their cause. A room full of people eager to learn more about sustainability. And delicious food freshly made using ingredients that are in season and local, including few items from the campus gardens courtesy of Ryes HomeGrown. First we had Joshna Maharaj, who is currently the assistant director of food service at RU Eats. She first talked about her experiences working at a hospital in Scarborough, where the kitchen (had no knives, salt, or oil according to Joshna) did very little cooking but mostly heated up prepackaged foods. Joshna was determined to change that and worked with the dietitians to introduce recipes made from fresh whole ingredients that are also nutritious. It was a struggle to find the balance between food full of flavour and food that adhere to patients dietary restrictions. But in the end the whole team was able to make it work, and the end result was, as Joshna put it, magical. Meredith Hayes, the Schools and Student Nutrition Senior Manager at FoodShare then talked about what is that they do at FoodShare. Meredith talked about how they were able to get students to try nutritious and healthy foods by respecting their taste buds and opinions, and also by getting them involved. FoodShare run workshops that teach students of all age cooking skills and students were always willing to try what they made themselves. Students are also engaged by getting to grow their own food; one school had rooftop that turned into a garden with 400 beds that produced variety of fruits and vegetables. Lastly, we had Fiona Yeudall, who is a professor at School of Nutrition and director of the Centre for Studies in Food Security. She talked about how social, environmental, and economical factors and every stage of the food cycle (from grow to throw) have to be taken into consideration when talking about sustainability. Fiona talked about how challenging working with other disciplines can be, but can also be exciting and create great results. She also told the story of how Ryes HomeGrown came to be, and how that required teamwork from students in different programs. Overall, I had a great experience at the event and learned about aspects of sustainability that I never thought about before. If you did miss this event do not worry, as CAFP Ryerson has many other great events planned. Teresa Hu (Communications Director) CAFP Ryerson blog: http://cafpryerson.wordpress.com/

November Memes

Toronto Entertainment and Events

By Ariane Dandar
We all know November can be a drag. With only an abundance of facial hair to keep us entertained, loads of assignments, and not a holiday in sight for at least another month, things can get dreary. Cheer up! Toronto is teeming with fall events to keep us smiling until we cruise to the end of the semester! Be sure to check these out: 1) The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair is the largest international agricultural and equestrian competition in the world, making it a great Canadian tradition. It boasts everything from horse shows to gigantic gourds. Theres lots to see and plenty of time to check it out - it runs November 1st to the 10th. 2) The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is coming out November 22nd! Be sure to pick up a discounted movie ticket at the SCC, and may the odds be ever in your favour! 3) The Santa Claus Parade is curiously enough an event that occurs in November (its been running since 1905, so take it up with him if you dare, and risk getting put on the Naughty List!) Get into a festive spirit and celebrate with the crowds along the Downtown Parade Route on November 17th. http://www.thesantaclausparade.ca/ 4) Okay, so maybe you didnt want to get into holiday festivities too early. Does November 30th work for you? If so, dont miss the lighting of the Christmas tree in Nathan Phillips Square and the Cavalcade of Lights - its super close to campus!
