Toby Threadgill (USA) and Robbie Smith (New Zealand) Special Wado Seminar in Berlin Beneath the surface, a deeper look at Wado ryu and Shindo Yoshin ryu Introduction
The classical schools of the Japanese samurai were dominated by the study of swordsmanship, which represented the highest embodiment of strategy (heiho). Through centuries of combat, the tactics of conflict were polished and studied to a high degree. Eventually the Japanese schools of swordsmanship adopted similar teaching methods and these methods spread to virtually all the schools of classical Japanese budo. The most important training method embraced by these schools were kata, prearranged contests between two individuals that instructed students in the theories and principles of combat. After the end of the Warring States Era in 1602, Japan entered a period of extended peace. During this time the theories and principles of combat were maintained through kata study. Shindo Yoshin ryu jujutsu was created during this period of intense dedication to kata as it was believed to be the premier tool for transmitting combat knowledge. In the early 20th century an accomplished student of Shindo Yoshin ryu named Hironori Ohtsuka observed a demonstration of Okinawan Karate and immediately recognized its potential as a legitimate form of martial study. However, as a man trained in Classical Japanese budo, Ohtsuka recognized the practical disadvantage of engaging only in solo kata training. In Ohtsuka's experience the dynamic interaction between paired adversaries offered direct access to combat principles simply unavailable in solo practice. In 1934 Hironori Ohtsuka created Wado ryu, his own representation of karate, one that embraced not only the solo kata of Okinawan Karate but paired forms based on those of his beloved classical Japanese budo, particularly Shindo Yoshin ryu jujutsu. It was the adoption of these paired forms, the Kumite Gata, Kihon Kumite, Idori, Tantodori and Shinken Shirahadori, that makes Ohtsukas art unique among all Japanese styles of Karate. Saturday: Atemi, Kuzushi, Tsukuri & Kake Atemi, Kuzushi, Tsukuri & Kake comprise the foundation of all Japanese paired kata. Without the study and implementation of each of these principles, victory is rarely achieved. These combat concepts, which originated in Japanese swordsmanship and jujutsu were included in the various Wado paired forms. Robbie Smith will utilize drills and paired forms, including the Wado Kumite gata to explore these concepts while Toby Threadgill will take participants on a journey back to Wado ryus roots in Shindo Yoshin ryu. In this way participants can examine the original context and impl ementation of these combat principles, and appreciate their unique implementation in Ohtsukas Wado ryu. Sunday: Sente - Initiative and attack in Japanese budo It is said that without sente there is no Japanese budo. In the karate world this goes against the old Okinawan karate maxim Karate ni sente nashi (In karate there is no first attack). A characteristic of Wado ryus roots in classical Japanese budo is its study and refinement of attacking tactics over defensive tactics. In this session Robbie Smith will utilize the Wado Kumite gata and unique drills of his own creation that will convey how the concepts of initiative were foundational in Ohtsukas expression of budo. Hironori Ohtsuka frequently demonstrated the Kumite gata at budo exhibitions as they represented the clearest expression of Wado ryu principles and its connection to classical Shindo Yoshin ryu. Toby Threadgill will again travel back historically to the samurais implementation of these combat tactics in Japanese swordsmanship and jujutsu. In this way the participants can better appreciate how Wado ryu is descended directly from classical Japanese budo. Wado ryu is essentially a classical budo created by a 20th century meijin (martial genius) whose life existed at the crossroads between feudal Japan and the modern era.
