Fiji's mainly indigenous party is backing a call for the word "Fijian" to be reserved only for the nation's Indigenous people. Three years ago, the coup-installed military government ruled that all citizens be referred to as "Fijian" regardless of ethnicity. Since then, the word "iTaukei", which doesn't distinguish between Indigenous Fijians and other Fijians, has been used in all official documents. But recently two of Fiji's most senior traditional leaders, Ro Teimumu Kepa and Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, have called for the term "Fijian" to only be used for Indigenous people. The Indigenous SODELPA Party is backing that call. "The word that could be used for everybody in Fiji would be the "Fiji Islanders" which combines us all. SODELPA does not believe that

any use of terms like that need to be imposed on the people", SODELPA spokesman Dr Tupeni Baba told Pacific Beat. "We are being democratic in our views on this particular issue, because the belief of the regime that whatever they force and impose should be followed by everybody is utterly ridiculous," Dr Baba said.
"Fijian"", the general secretary of the Sanatan Dharam, Vijendra Prakash said. "I think their claim that Fijian should belong to them is not what will be acceptable to most members of the community in Fiji. Other members of the community also want to enjoy the ownership right of this nation", Mr Prakash said.

Fijis Attorney General Aiyaz SayedKhaiyum revoked the appointments of all office bearers of the Fiji Cancer Society and appointed a three member committee to investigate anomalies. In making the announcement, SayedKhaiyum said government is pertained by allegations against office bearers and wants a thorough investigation. He said the decision was made under the Charitable Trusts Amendment Decree which states that the minister responsible can take this action if the charitable trust is not functioning or has become dissolved, is not by reason of the state of its affairs able to function properly or is failing to achieve its objects or is acting contrary to its objects. The decree further gives the powers to the minister to appoint an interim board of trustees for the charitable trust who shall hold office and perform all the functions and exercise all the powers until the next annual general meeting. In the past few months we received a lot of complaints against the Fiji Cancer Society and many complaints
also reached the Prime Ministers office regarding the anomalies in the organisation. We have also been given some factual material that funds were not used properly and the properties were also misused. Some politicians were also involved in the anomalies and the committee will thoroughly investigate this as well. He said a lot of people have also been donating funds to the Society and need an explanation about all the financial anomalies. The committee comprises of former High Court judge Nazhat Shameem, medical consultant Dr James Fong and CJ Patel Group financial controller Sura Weera. He said given the background of the three members, he is expecting a well detailed report from them upon the completion of their work. Sayed-Khaiyum added that no specific timeframe has been given to the committee to complete its investigation and various consultations will be held with relevant stakeholders to ensure a transparent report is presented.
FINTEL has confirmed through a public notice that the preliminary works for the laying of the Fiji-Vanuatu Communication Cable has started. It says the cable-laying activity will be carried out at the FINTEL foreshore at the end of Rifle Range Road in Vatuwaqa, Suva and the Laucala Bay waters, towards Nukubuco Passage from November 1 to 29. The pre-works will see the cable ship, ILE de RE, working in the Laucala Bay area from the FINTEL foreshore towards Nukubuco Passage laying the Fiji end of the cable, FINTEL said. In light of this, FINTEL has requested mariners, fishermen and the travelling public to take necessary precaution. FINTEL has urged them to steer well clear of the cable ship by 500 metres during operations inside the reef and crossing by any vessel between the cable ships aft and shore during the landing is prohibited. The ship is expected to sail out of the bay via the Nukubuco Passage by the evening of November 6 at the latest, continuing with the cable lay activities
Fiji ship and boat operators fees will be cut by up to 80 per cent in fees under the new marine registration, coastal trading and survey fees regulations. Ministry of Transport permanent secretary Francis Kean says the announcement will attract boat and ship owners. Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) chief executive Neale Slack
said the new regulations come into effect on March 5, 2014. Any vessel less than 100 gross tonnage, survey fees for vessels less than 10 tonnes and the costing-trade licence for vessels less than 10 metres in length will be surveyed and registered. The new decrees will see all craft motorised or non-motorised surveyed and registered.
The National Training and Productivity Centre of Fiji National University as the National Productivity Organisation (NPO) of Fiji will host the 54th session of the Asian Productivity Organisation (APO) heads of NPOs meeting. The event is held at Sheraton Fiji Resort in Nadi. The official opening was done by Fijis Prime Minister, Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama, who welcomed more than 50 delegates from 19 APO member countries including Fiji. The APO workshop is an annual event and is attended by heads of NPOs and agriculture delegates of NPOs from all APO member countries. The heads of NPOs and agriculture delegates are high ranking civil servants, businessmen and highly qualified professionals. The objective of the APO is to increase productivity in the countries of Asia and the Pacific region through mutual
towards Vanuatu, it said. There will be ongoing post cable lay works along the FINTEL foreshore and within the bay till November 29. Co-operation and adherence to this notification by the members of the public and others is highly appreciated. What this means? Interchange Limited, the Vanuatubased project company, will construct, own and operate a 1224 kilometres submarine optical fibre cable to connect Vanuatu with Fiji. This would be a milestone for the people of Vanuatu and heralds the arrival of the first international submarine optical fibre cable connection for Vanuatu. This cable will connect Vanuatu to the Southern Cross Cable Network, which links Australia and New Zealand with the USA. It is expected that this new connection will offer faster internet and improved access to telecommunications. It will providing a cost-effective solution to the people of Vanuatu who are currently almost completely dependent on satellite connections.
co-operation between countries. The membership of the APO is by national governments, which puts the responsibility for the promotion of productivity in the nation, on the government of the day, through the respective National Productivity Organisations. Countries attending the meeting include Bangladesh, Cambodia, Republic of China, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Islamic Republic of Iran, Japan, Republic of Korea, Lao, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam. The Peoples Democratic Party is predicting Fijis 2014 Budget which will be announced next week to be more election focused. Interim party president Adi Sivia Qoro says the government should act responsibly and not spend money that it does not have as the debts cannot be left to the new government that will come into power after the 2014 September elections. If it (the budget) benefits the people, PDP will welcome it. We ask for the benefits to be real and meaningful not just done to capture the headlines, she said. As a top priority the government must address the weak economic growth faced by this nation which is contrary to optimistic view painted by some pundits, both local and abroad. She said to strengthen economic growth, the party is urging government to cut back capital expenditure from borrowed money, strengthen the principal export sectors which to date continue to perform poorly, review its loan portfolio and review its

Fiji wants to compete with the best in a global marketplace that is more competitive, says Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama. Speaking at the opening of the 54th workshop of the Asian Productivity Organisation at the Sheraton Resort and Spa, Commodore Bainimarama said the organisation had played an instrumental role. Commodore Bainimarama said Fiji was committed to quality and there was room for improvement. Fiji is determined to link our name or national brand, if you willwith quality. I believe we are achieving that in the tourism and hospitality sector, where we are competing with the most desirable and sophisticated tourist destinations in the world. This, he said, has been done without sacrificing our natural environment. Some 50 delegates from 19 countries are in Fiji to discuss what projects would be undertaken in the member countries to increase productivity. Commodore Bainimarama agreed that there was room for improvement in this area. The goal of productivity in itself
means a constant reflection, a constant assessment and critique. Fiji has been a member of the organisation for the past twenty nine years. According to the APO website, the organisation was established on May 11, 1961 as a regional intergovernmental organisation. It aims to contribute to the sustainable socioeconomic development of Asia and the Pacific through enhancing productivity. It was through the efforts of this organisation that the Fiji National Training Center (FNTC) was initially built in Fiji. Commodore Bainimarama told the delegates that to enhance productivity, the Fijian Mahogany industry was reformed. We made the hard decisions, we made strategic investments, and we engaged all stakeholders in the effort. The turnaround has been dramatic and real. The Fijian Made campaign on this front has also been an important step in the process. It is not just a campaign to encourage Fijians to buy products made in Fiji and therefore amongst other things, protect Fijian jobs.

Our agricultural export development efforts are expected to be enhanced further following a recently-formed partnership. This partnership is between the European Union-funded Increasing Agricultural Commodity Trade (IACT) project and the Market Development Facility. A recently-signed a memorandum of understanding would enable them to seek opportunities for synergies, collaboration and cross-programme learning to maximise effective development outcomes. Both parties agree the partnership will help businesses take advantage of export opportunities, promoting more inclusive growth. Team leader of the IACT project, Samu Turagacati, said: This partnership is crucial in strengthening our combined engagement for the enterprises we serve in Fiji. It will help fast-track key developments so that benefits are realised early. The partnership will facilitate regular exchange of expertise and valuable information about businesses between IACT and Market Development Facility. This, Mr Turagacati says, will avoid duplication of activities and help improve their productivity and efficiency. Market Development Facility country representative for Fiji, Shahroz Jalil,

Our staff are also very fortunate to be given an opportunity to get their eyes checked and treated by these specialists as we know how important having good eye sight with proper eye wear is for their lives, our business and 12 the tourism industry as a whole, Mr. Hopgood added. Fiji Airways announced its intention to rebrand its regional subsidiary Pacific Sun. And its giving the people of Fiji the opportunity to suggest a new name for the airline. Pacific Sun is Fijis main domestic airline and also does regional flights on behalf of Fiji Airways. Fiji Airways Managing Director and CEO Stefan Pichler says: Pacific Sun provides an invaluable link for Fijis major domestic ports to Nadi and Suva, as well as maintain an important Pacific link in the Fiji Airways network. Since Fiji Airways (then Air Pacific) started up the domestic and regional subsidiary, Pacific Sun hasnt had a brand alignment with its commercial position. Now with an investment in brand new aircraft for the airline to complement the operational restructure it has been going through, the time is right for us to create an identity for Pacific Sun an identity that Fiji can be proud of, and one which will resonate with our customers. Fiji Airways has embarked on a unique campaign to seek the input of Fijians in selecting a new name for the airline. We thought about how we could make this process more inclusive with the people of Fiji, and have
come up with an idea to solicit their opinion into a name for Pacific Sun, Mr. Pichler added. While this isnt a majority-wins contest, and weve set some parameters for the feedback we hope to receive, it will be exciting to see what the public can come up with. Ultimately the mass of opinions will be an input with a variety of commercial considerations which will form the basis for our final decision. The new brand for our domestic and regional carrier will align with the new Fiji Airways identity, and highlight its important role as a link to Fiji and the Pacific. Hence the new identity will have a distinct yet part-of-the-family look and feel to Fiji Airways. One of the conditions for new identity is that it must include the name Fiji in it. All entries suggesting a new name for the airline must also include a brief line explaining why the name should be chosen (in 30 words or less). To see all terms and conditions and to enter, please visit www.fijiairways. com/changingpacificsun. Winners for various prizes like a free return trip*, a free annual Tabua Club membership and Fiji Airways merchandise will also be selected from submissions accepted by the airline.

Ambassadors of the Group of 77 and China met at the United Nations to deliberate on the role of finance in the Post-2015 Development Agenda. The meeting's Chair, Fijian Ambassador Peter Thomson, convened the meeting as one of the series of G77 Ambassadorial meetings aimed at best informing the Group in its preparations for the world's Post2015 Development Agenda. He said the theme of today's meeting was finance for development. The meeting was addressed by Dr Mansur Muhtar, Co-Chair of the Intergovernmental Committee of Experts on Sustainable Development Financing. Dr Muhtar elaborated on the progress of the Intergovernmental Committee. He said that the Intergovernmental Committee is tasked by the United Nations with assessing financing needs of the Post-2015 Development Agenda, as well as considering the effectiveness of existing mechanisms, and with evaluating additional initiatives that could form an effective sustainable development financing strategy for the Post-2015 Development Agenda. Dr Muhtar is a former Finance Minister of Nigeria and is currently an alternate Executive Director of the
World Bank in Washington. Following his address, Dr Muhtar engaged with G77 Ambassadors in a question-andanswer session eliciting problems and solutions for the forthcoming sustainable development financing strategy. The meeting was also addressed by Her Majesty Queen Maxima of the Netherlands, who is the UN SecretaryGeneral's Special Advocate for
Inclusive Finance. Queen Maxima highlighted the plight of the 2.5 billion adults in the world who are excluded
from the formal financial system. The Dutch Queen told the meeting, "Financial exclusion is greatest among poor people and in emerging and developing countries, including the rural households that account for more than 70% of extreme poverty." Queen Maxima said that without formal financial services, "families juggle informal, risky and expensive tools in order to manage cash and meet daily needs." She said that, "lack of savings accounts and health insurance contributes to the fact that 100 million people fall into poverty due to medical costs each year". Queen Maxima called upon G77 Ambassadors to find an appropriate place for Inclusive Finance in the goals of the Post-2015 Development Agenda. She said this was a cross-cutting issue, and that Inclusive Finance was a critical enabler and an accelerator of equitable economic growth, job creation, along with social and human development.

He fainted when he first entered an operating theatre while still a medical student. But today he is one of the best heart surgeons in the Asia region with Sahyadri Hospitals in India. In an exclusive interview with The Fiji Times, Dr Rajesh Kaushish revealed how he started his medical career, not forgetting the more than 5000 heart surgeries he has performed so far. Dr Kaushish, who hails from Punjab, said he was always interested in science from his childhood and he was good in biology while in school. He is the first doctor in the family while there are many on his wife's side, although she is not one. "I fainted when I first went into an operating theatre as a medical student," he said with a laugh. "I got attracted to cardiac surgery because I found it to be the most demanding and challenging. "I did my surgical training and the specialist training. It was a 10-year training in India and I did my fellowship in the US." Dr Kaushish graduated from the Armed Forces Medical College and served with the Indian Army, further specialising in cardiac surgery. He completed his 20-year bond before taking early retirement and joining Sahyadri Hospitals. He is in Fiji for the first time. "I served with the artillery regiment

and went to high altitude areas with them. I used to do surgeries on Indian troops and I was quite used to the surgical field before I performed my first cardiac surgery. "There was so much glamour attached to cardiac surgery when I was doing my training. It's a slow learning thing and my first case was very, very thrilling. The feeling was very, very great." Dr Kaushish performed his first heart surgery in 1996 and he has done more than 5000 successful surgeries so far. He also performs lung surgeries. "Ever since I left the army, I have been doing only heart surgeries but I also do lung surgeries. I performed 20 successful surgeries on beating hearts in Fiji and all were successful. "I am looking forward to coming to Fiji again. I am glad that I was of help to 20 people. But if we have two theatres and 10 beds, then I can do four surgeries a day. "Cardiac surgery is like skating on thin ice and I'm very happy and lucky that I didn't have any major complications in the 20 cases." Although Dr Kaushish has not seen most of Fiji because of his tight schedule with the heart patients, he described the country and its people as beautiful, with nice scenic views everywhere. He is looking forward to his second trip to Fiji next year, with the view to operate on more patients and give them a new lease of life.

South Africa Jails White Supremacists Over Plot To Murder Nelson Mandela
The mastermind of a white supremacist plot to kill Nelson Mandela and drive blacks out of South Africa has been sentenced to 35 years in jail. Mike du Toit was the ringleader of an extremist right-wing militia called Boeremag, which plotted to overthrow the post-apartheid government in 2002. A judge at the High Court in Pretoria handed Toit and four other defendants the highest sentence of 35 years in jail. A spokesman for the National Prosecution Authority says the rest of the 20 militia members on trial were sentenced to between 10 and 30 years in jail, depending on their degree of involvement in the plot. However, several of the defendants will be going home free men because the judge suspended 10 years of the sentences against them and took into account the time behind bars during the trial. The trial lasted almost a decade until the Boeremag members were convicted in August last year - the first guilty verdicts for treason since the end of apartheid in 1994. All 20 accused were convicted of treason, but only five of murder and the plot to kill Mr Mandela, a Nobel peace laureate and South Africa's first black president. The Boeremag - Afrikaans for "Boer Force", a reference to the descendants of the first Dutch colonisers - had planned to sow chaos through bomb blasts. They then intended to take over military bases, replace the government with white military rule and chase all blacks and Indians from the country. The Boermag also intended to shoot whites who opposed their vision of a racially pure nation. One woman died and dozens of people were injured in blasts that shook the Johannesburg township of Soweto in October 2002. The group included former university lecturer Toit, a medical doctor, exsoldiers and farmers. Mandela, now 95, is critically ill but being treated at his Johannesburg home after being discharged from hospital in September following a three-month stay.
THIS time, the winner ISN'T Sydney. Or Melbourne. Instead, it's Adelaide that has scored a mention in Lonely Planet's list of the world's best cities to visit in 2014. Joining the likes of Paris and Shanghai on the list, Adelaide, which attracts just 332,000 visitors a year, has been deemed an emerging hotspot due to its secret beaches, arts and wine scene. "Having always lived in the shadow of its gregarious eastern-seaboard cousins," the Lonely Planet review said, "the 'City of Churches' has been quietly loosening its pious shackles and embracing its liberal foundations. "The year 2014 beckons big changes for the city's heart, with the completion of the multi-million-dollar refurbishment of the Adelaide Oval, which will link central Adelaide with the Oval and its beautiful surrounding parklands, and

South Australian Tourism Minister, Leon Bignell, said Adelaide has undergone a huge transformation in recent years, making it a 'more appealing destination'. Last year, it was Hobart that made the Lonely Planet list due to its 'natural beauty, arts and foodie scene'. The top 10 cities are: 1. Paris, France 2. Trinidad, Cuba 3. Cape Town, South Africa 4. brainwaves, eye, abdominal, chest, hip and leg movement. The tests revealed that a minimum seat width of 46cm improved passenger sleep quality by 53 per cent when compared to the 1950s-style 17 inch (43cm) standard. Dr Irshaad Ebrahim, of The London Sleep Centre, said: "The difference was significant. All passengers experienced a deeper, less disturbed and longer night's sleep in the 18-inch seat." Kevin Keniston, Airbus' head of passenger comfort, said: "If the aviation industry doesn't take a stand right now then we risk jeopardising passenger comfort into 2045 and beyond especially if you take into account aircraft delivery timetables combined with expected years in service. Which means another generation of passengers will be consigned to seats which are based on outdated standards."

Only a small number of Saudi women appeared to take part in an organised protest against a driving ban after official threats of punishment. Activists had urged women to get behind the wheel in defiance of the ban on female drivers in Saudi Arabia. About 17,000 people have signed a petition calling for women to be allowed to drive, or at the very least, an explanation of why the ban should remain in force. But ahead of the planned action, Saudi authorities women reported they had received phone calls from the interior ministry asking them to promise not to take part in the driving protest. Undeterred by the warnings of unspecified sanctions and increased security in Riyadh, several women posted videos of themselves driving on Saturday. At least four videos were posted on YouTube, including from the capital, and rights activist Naseema Assada said three others had driven in an eastern province to show women's

"Had there not been a threat from the interior ministry, more women would have responded," said Ms Assada, who did not herself drive so that "authorities would not consider the move a challenge" to the ministry orders. More women are expected behind the wheel in the coming days if authorities take no measures against those who defied the ban on Saturday, activists say. "The authorities clearly do not want any gatherings on a specific date," activist Maysaa al-Amudi said of the "drive-in". "We are trying to calm things down and affirm that the campaign will continue but without a specific date." Earlier this week, about 100 conservative clerics denounced the campaign as a threat to the country. Activists behind it believe the public mood is changing, with many people - including an increasing number of men - publicly supporting women's right to drive.

An Edmonton father of two is celebrating after hearing his phone company has agreed to refund him more than $1,300 after a fight that lasted eight months. Since March, 2013, Mazhar Malik has been trying to convince VOIS, a Calgary-based discount telecom and internet provider, that it owed him the money. As he pored over bills and bank statements Malik told Go Public how he mistakenly paid VOIS $1,404, the amount owing on his credit card. His phone bill was actually $44.45. When I called (VOIS) they said dont worry, he said, go to your bank. they (will) request us , and when they request us we will refund your money. Malik, who speaks English poorly, thought the matter was settled, especially since his April bill showed a credit for the huge overpayment. But no money appeared in his bank account. And when his May bill from VOIS arrived, the credit for the overpayment was gone, without explanation. Malik says when he called the company it insisted the money had been repaid into the same account he used to pay his bills online. Company insisted money repaid Even after he produced a letter from the branch manager of his TD bank, Malik says the company kept insisting they had repaid the money, not once, but three times. Commissioner Howard Maker says CCTS would have brought a resolution to Maliks case much more quickly. Absolutely we can. And Im sorry it took him so long, Marker said. This is exactly the kind of thing that were there to do, to help consumers who, for whatever reason, cant sort out an issue with their service provider. Maker says close to 90 per cent of complaints are successfully resolved, two-thirds within 40 days. Malik says hes glad hes getting his money back, but says it should have happened sooner. He said hes through with VOIS and is looking for a new phone company.

A doctor faces possible sanctions because he's accused of mistakenly telling a patient he would die of lung cancer in three months. The patient is still alive nearly three years later, and is in remission from cancer of the lymph nodes. "He told me it was over, it was incurable," Fernand Charbonneau, 73, told a disciplinary hearing for Dr. Ron Frank Starra, who works at Gatineau Hospital. Charbonneau had been bothered by a dry cough and went to the hospital

You may soon be able to pick up a sixpack of your favourite beer along with your weekly groceries in B.C. The provincial government is reviewing the feasibility of selling alcohol in grocery stores after receiving overwhelming support for the idea on a blog encouraging public consultation on how to overhaul B.C.s liquor policies. Parliamentary Secretary John Yap said 80 per cent of respondents on his liquor review blog supported the idea. The website is part of a larger review to modernize provincial liquor laws and find retail models that could work for B.C. when it comes to alcohol sales. I've heard strong support for liquor sales in grocery stores and the added convenience it would afford B.C. families, Yap said. There's no doubt this would be a big shift in our province - so we will be taking a thoughtful approach and carefully considering which model could work best for B.C., while taking into account all the concerns we've heard about the dangers of increased access to minors. B.C. is considering models from different provinces, including the
store within a store model in Nova Scotia, where provincial liquor stores operate within grocery stores. The Quebec model of allowing grocery stores to sell domestic and imported beer, as well as local wine, is also being mulled by B.C. Finally, authorities will examine the Ontario model, where local wineries are allowed to sell bottles either in freestanding stores or a store within a grocery store. Yap said consideration is being given to maintaining the current cap on the overall number of liquor outlets in the province to balance some concerns heard from health and safety advocates about the number of retail outlets. There are three days left for the public to give their input on how theyd like to see provincial liquor laws changed. The last major review of liquor laws in the province was in 1999, but didnt include any public consultation. Yap will submit his final report to Attorney General Suzanne Anton on Nov. 25. In 2013, British Columbians bought more than $1-billion in beer and $1.9-billion in wine and spirits.

Shopping has replaced short vacations as the top reason for driving across the border at the Lower Mainlands crossings. New research shows nearly a third of a million cars and trucks entered Whatcom County in July alone. Most went bargain hunting. Close to 310,000 stops were made at crossings stretching from Point Roberts to Huntingdon-Sumas in a single summer month. Thats more than quadruple the number the number back in 2007.
The number of crossings is still quite a bit lower than it used to be in the true hey day of cross-border travel in 1992 or 1993. Were getting back to where we used to be, but were still not there, notes David Davidson with Western Washington Universitys Border Policy Institute. He credits the stronger Loonie and better use of the NEXUS lane for the boost in numbers in recent years. Back in 2007, nearly a third of all crossings were made for short vacations; that now stands at only 15 per cent.
Surrey has logged its 19th murder of the year, as a man was found last Friday, shot to death in the driveway of his Surrey home. At about 5 a.m., at 156 Street and 86 Avenue, neighbours heard about three gunshots and a car speeding away afterward. Surrey RCMP and paramedics arrived to find 35-year-old Satwant Singh Bains dead inside his vehicle. Police say Bains had just said good bye to his wife and kids before heading off to work. As soon as he got into his vehicle, he was shot. Bains' body was slumped out of the driver's side door of a car parked in the driveway.
The integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has taken custody of the case and is currently investigating. Bains does not have a criminal record, said police, who added the shooting was targeted. IHIT is continuing to look for a motive to the shooting. The death brings the number of murders in Surrey this year to 19, well past the last decade's annual average of 14. It also comes close to the annual highwater mark for the last decade, which was in 2005, when there were 21 killings in Surrey. IHIT is looking for a white four-door sedan that sped off westbound on 86 Avenue just after the shooting. Anyone with information about the

When you look in on your sleeping child, you want to hear the sounds of sweet dreams: easy breathing and perhaps an occasional sigh. But some parents hear the harsher sounds of gnashing and grinding teeth, called bruxism, which is common in kids. What Is Bruxism? Bruxism is the medical term for the grinding of teeth or the clenching of jaws, especially during deep sleep or while under stress. It comes from the Greek word "brychein," which means to gnash the teeth. Three out of every 10 kids will grind or clench, experts say, with the highest incidence in children under 5. Causes of Bruxism Though studies have been done, no one knows why bruxism happens. But in some cases, kids may grind because the top and bottom teeth aren't aligned properly. Others do it as a response to pain, such as an earache or teething. Kids might grind their teeth as a way to ease the pain, just as they might rub a sore muscle. Most kids outgrow these fairly common causes for grinding. Stress - usually nervous tension or anger is another cause. For instance, your child may be worrying about a test at school or experiencing a change in routine (a new sibling or a new teacher). Even arguing with parents and siblings can cause enough stress to prompt teeth grinding or jaw clenching. Some kids who are hyperactive also experience bruxism. Effects of Bruxism Generally, bruxism doesn't hurt a child's teeth. Many cases go undetected with no adverse effects, though some may result in mild morning headaches or earaches. Most often, however, the condition can be more bothersome to you and others in your home because of the grinding sound. In some extreme circumstances, nighttime grinding and clenching can wear down tooth enamel, chip teeth, increase temperature sensitivity, and cause severe facial pain and jaw problems, such as temporomandibular joint disease (TMJ). Most kids who grind, however, do not have TMJ problems unless their grinding and clenching is chronic. Diagnosing Bruxism Lots of kids who grind their teeth aren't
even aware of it, so it's often siblings or parents who identify the problem. Some signs to watch for: grinding noises when your child is sleeping complaints of a sore jaw or face in the morning thumb sucking fingernail biting gnawing on pencils and toys chewing the inside of the cheek If you think your child is grinding his or her teeth, visit the dentist, who will examine the teeth for chipped enamel and unusual wear and tear, and spray air and water on the teeth to check for unusual sensitivity. If damage is detected, the dentist will ask your child a few questions, such as: How do you feel before bed? Are you worried about anything at home or school? Are you angry with someone? What do you do before bed? The exam will help the dentist determine whether the grinding is caused by anatomical (misaligned teeth) or psychological (stress) factors and come up with an effective treatment plan. Treating Bruxism Most kids outgrow bruxism, but a combination of parental observation and dental visits can help keep the problem in check until they do. In cases where the grinding and clenching make a child's face and jaw sore or damage the teeth, dentists may prescribe a special night guard. Molded to a child's teeth, the night guard is similar to the protective mouthpieces worn by football players. Though a mouthpiece may take some getting used to, positive results happen quickly. Helping Kids With Bruxism Whether the cause is physical or psychological, kids might be able to control bruxism by relaxing before bedtime for example, by taking a warm bath or shower, listening to a few minutes of soothing music, or reading a book. For bruxism that's caused by stress, try to find out what's upsetting your child and find a way to help. For example, a kid who is worried about being away from home for a first camping trip might need reassurance that mom or
dad will be nearby if anything happens. If the issue is more complicated, such as moving to a new town, discuss your child's concerns and try to ease any fears. If you're concerned about your child's emotional state, talk to your doctor. In rare cases, basic stress relievers aren't enough to stop bruxism. If your child has trouble sleeping or is acting differently than usual, your child's dentist or doctor may suggest a psychological assessment. This can help determine the cause of the stress and an appropriate course of treatment. How Long Does Bruxism Last? Childhood bruxism is usually
outgrown by adolescence. Most kids stop grinding when they lose their baby teeth because permanent teeth are much more sensitive to pain. However, a few children do continue to grind into adolescence. And if the bruxism is caused by stress, it will continue until the stress is relieved. Preventing Bruxism Because some bruxism is a child's natural reaction to growth and development, most cases can't be prevented. Stress-induced bruxism can be avoided, however, by talking with kids regularly about their feelings and helping them deal with stress.

Excessive media use can be linked to obesity, lack of sleep, school problems, aggression and other behaviour issues among children, new research in the US says. Researchers of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) have claimed that spending long hours on social media has been linked to violence, cyberbullying, school woes, obesity, lack of sleep and a host of other problems. "Many parents are clueless about the impact media exposure can have on their children," Victor Strasburger, lead author of a new AAP policy said. A recent study shows that the average 8- to 10-year-old child spends nearly eight hours a day with different media, and older children and teens spend more than 11 hours per day. Kids who have a TV in their bedroom spend more time with media.
Children Should Not Spend More Younger Migraine Sufferers More Than Two Hours Online: Study Likely To Have Depression
About 75 percent of 12-to 17-yearolds own cell phones, and nearly all teenagers use text messaging. "When 70 percent of children and teenagers have access to electronic media in their bedrooms, parents have no way of knowing what they are seeing, or downloading or texting. This is a plea for parents to take back control," Strasburger said. Pediatricians have expressed concern about what kids are viewing, how much time they are spending with media, and privacy and safety issues with the Internet. "Media have an impact. Kids learn from what they are seeing. One violent movie isn't going to turn your child into a mass murderer. But a constant diet of media violence is not healthy for kids, whether it's video games or violent movies, or TV," he added. People who suffer from migraines are roughly twice as likely to suffer from depression, according to new research. Researchers at the University of Toronto found that younger migraine sufferers were particularly at greater risk of depression. The report, which was published in the journal Depression Research and Treatment, revealed that more than eight percent of men with migraines suffer from depression, compared to just over three percent of men without migraines. Researchers also found that more than 12 percent of female migraine-sufferers experience depression, compared to less than six percent of women who do not have migraines. Individuals with migraines, who are younger than 30, are six times likely to suffer from depression in comparison to sufferers who are aged 65 and over, said lead author of the research report, Esme Fuller-Thomson of the Sandra Rotman Endowed Chair of University of Toronto's Factor-Inwentash Faculty
Scientists have suggested a new test that identifies seven distinct types of breast cancer which will offer new hope to women with the dreaded disease. The tumour sample test could be available within two years and is expected to lead to more personalised treatments. Identifying more biomarkers will help doctors tailor therapy plans that better suit their patients, avoiding over or under treatment. Currently, just two proteins are routinely identified in breast cancer cells; one is the oestrogen receptor (ER) that makes a tumour hormone-sensitive, while the other is HER2, which is responsive to the breast cancer drug Herceptin. Scientists funded by the Breast Cancer Campaign looked for signature biomarkers in 1073 tumour samples from the charity's tissue bank. They found that 93 percent fitted perfectly into one of seven classes,
of Social Work. 'We are not sure why younger migraineurs have such a high likelihood of depression and suicidal ideation,' co-author and former graduate student Meghan Schrumm said. 'The much lower prevalence of depression and suicidal ideation among older migraineurs suggests a promising area for future research,' Schrumm added. Data drawn from the 2005 Canadian Community Health Survey, a representative sample, of more than 67,000 Canadians, were used to examine gender-specific associations between migraine and depression. More than 6,000 respondents reported that they had been diagnosed by a health professional with migraines. Consistent with prior research, the prevalence of migraines was much higher in women than men, with one in every seven women, compared to one in every 16 men, reporting that they had migraines.
while another seven percent had mixed characteristics and were harder to categorise. Further verification of the seven cancer types was then made using another 28 tumour samples. The seven classes are defined by different combinations and levels of 10 proteins found in breast cancer cells, including ER and HER2, but also others not currently tested, such as p53, cytokeratins, HER3 and HER4. Each cancer type has a different effect on patient survival, according to the scientists. Lead researcher Dr Andy Green, from the University of Nottingham, said with an increasing number of treatment options available for breast cancer patients, decision-making regarding the choice of the most appropriate treatment method is becoming increasingly complex.
Daily cleansing and shaving can take a toll on men's facial skin. Regular use of moisturiser is one way to regain the softness, says an expert and suggests how to keep the skin soft: * Limit bath time: Hot water and long showers remove oils from your skin so, limit your shower time and use lukewarm water * Avoid strong soaps: Use mild
cleansers to avoid dryness * Shave carefully: To protect and lubricate your skin, apply cream, lotion or gel before shaving. Use a clean and sharp razor * Pat dry: After bathing, gently pat your skin dry with a towel so that some moisture is retained * Moisturise dry skin: Find a moisturiser that suits your skin type and makes your skin feel soft
a generally active daily life had a much lower risk profile for cardiovascular problems, irrespective of how much formal exercise they took, than those with low levels of daily activity. This profile included smaller waists, lower levels of potentially harmful blood fats, and lower glucose, insulin, and clotting factor levels in men. The same was true of those who did a lot of formal exercise, but who weren't routinely physically active very often. Those who exercised regularly and were also often physically active had the lowest risk profile of all. During the 12.5 year monitoring period, 476 of the participants had their first heart attack and 383 died from various causes. The highest level of daily physical activity was associated with a 27 percent lower risk of a heart attack or stroke and a 30 percent reduced risk of death from all causes, compared with the lowest level, irrespective of how much regular formal exercise was taken in addition.

A new study has revealed that rheumatoid arthritis patients may be more likely to suffer from heart problems, early menopause. Co-author Eric Matteson, M.D., chair of rheumatology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesotta, said that one thing that we learned in particular in this study is that the high disease burden on the joints in the first year of disease already is a very strong predictor of cardiovascular disease subsequently, and that seems to be mitigated as time goes on if the disease burden can be reduced too. In other research, a Mayo team looked at a common virus called cytomegalovirus, a bug many people get and do not even know they have. They found correlations between
rheumatoid arthritis patients' immune response to the virus and the development of myocardial disease. Matteson said that if it turns out that there is this relationship, then it may be that one way to spot patients who are at higher risk for heart disease would be an immune profile or biomarkers related to the cytomegalovirus and its associated immune activation signalling. Matteson said that another study found that women with rheumatoid arthritis and early menopause -- menopause before age 45 -- also seem to be at higher risk of heart disease. About two-thirds of patients with rheumatoid arthritis are women, and researchers have long studied possible hormonal influences on development of the disease.
Trying to slash the extra fat? Say no to unhealthy foods items such as red meat, fast food and more, says an expert. - Fast foods: Burgers, pizzas, carbonated beverages, noodles and many more are junk foods low in nutritional values and high in sodium, sugar and preservatives. They disturb your body's metabolism, digestion, liver and heart functions. - Sugary foods: Young people especially children have a weakness for sugary soft drinks, chocolates, ice creams and other items that have absolute high calorie content. They contribute drastically in embracing diabetes and blocking arteries. - Red meat: If you can't live without
non-vegetarian food and it is hard to resist yourself to change your main course, then shift from red meat to white in order to control cholesterol level. - Refined grains: Our body requires a substantial amount of fiber which one can derive from grains' covering or husk. Consuming refined grains especially white rice and wheat flour increases obesity and health problems. - Oil and ghee: Harmful effects of unsaturated fats are obvious for those who are already overweight or one who gives little or no time for physical activities due to busy work schedule and other problems.
Omega-3 fatty acids, which are normally found in fish, if taken in excess could have unintended health consequences in certain situations, a new study has suggested. "We are seeing the potential for negative effects at really high levels of omega-3 fatty acid consumption. Because we lack valid biomarkers for exposure and knowledge of who might be at risk if consuming excessive amounts, it isn't possible to determine an upper limit at this time," Norman Hord, associate professor in OSU's College of Public Health and Human Sciences and a coauthor on the paper, said. Omega-3 fatty acids have antiinflammatory properties, which is one of the reasons they can be beneficial to heart health and inflammatory issues. However, the researchers said excess amounts of omega-3 fatty acids can alter immune function sometimes in ways that may lead to a dysfunctional immune response to a viral or bacterial infection. "The dysfunctional immune response to excessive omega-3 fatty acid consumption can affect the body's
ability to fight microbial pathogens, like bacteria," the researcher said. Generally, the researchers point out that the amounts of fish oil used in most studies are typically above what one could consume from foods or usual dosage of a dietary supplement. However, an increasing amount of products, such as eggs, bread, butters, oils and orange juice, are being "fortified" with omega-3s. Hord said this fortified food, coupled with fish oil supplement use, increases the potential for consuming these high levels. "Overall, we support the dietary recommendations from the American Heart Association to eat fish, particularly fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, lake trout or sardines, at least two times a week, and for those at risk of coronary artery disease to talk to their doctor about supplements," he said. Hord said their main concern here is the hyper-supplemented individual, who may be taking high-dose omega-3 supplements and eating four to five omega-3-enriched foods per day.

This, they explain, could induce high loading forces on knee joints. Moreover, they observed a decrease in ankle movement and inversion while running that correlated with heel height, which would be linked to a greater risk of sprain. The researchers suggest that the higher the heel the greater the risk of an ankle sprain if running.

A federal judge has sided with Citizenship Canada in its appeal of a previous Citizenship Court ruling granting Canadian citizenship to Fatima Naveen. Ms. Naveen, who was born in Pakistan, had applied for Canadian citizenship in 2007, despite having only resided in Canada for approximately 150 days since becoming a permanent resident in 2004. The Citizenship Act clearly states that a permanent resident must typically be physically present within Canada for a total of three of the four previous years before applying for a Canadian passport, yet Ms. Naveen was granted citizenship, after claiming that her life was centralized in Canada, even if she was not physically present. Justice Peter Annis, in overturning the ruling granting Ms. Naveen citizenship, has made two separate points. The first, based in law, is that Ms. Naveen simply did not qualify for Canadian citizenship under the Citizenship Act. Her parents and siblings had moved to Canada, and Ms. Naveen herself became a permanent resident in 2004, but she then left Canada to continue studying medicine in the United States. Her parents remained in Canada,
living in the Toronto-area suburb of Richmond Hill, while Ms. Naveen attended Harvard Medical School. During her vacations from school, Ms. Naveen would sometimes return to Richmond Hill, but still spent the vast majority of her time outside of Canada. There are some exceptions in the Citizenship Act for those who are seeking citizenship but are residing outside of Canada, including being abroad while employed by a government agency or deployed as a member of the Armed Forces. Also, in some rare instances, judges have concluded that a would-be Canadian has been effectively Canadianized through their particular life experiences even if they do not meet the exact legal standard, and should be granted citizenship. These are reasonable exceptions. But for everyone else, the requirement of a total of three years out of four must be met, and Ms. Naveen failed this test. As Justice Annis noted, the fact that her family lived in Richmond Hill was not sufficient to permit Ms. Naveen to absorb her required time in Canada via her parents through some process of osmosis. Indeed.

Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan has been honoured with a prestigious US award in recognition of his successful effort to create debate on India's pressing social problems through his popular TV show "Satyamev Jayate". Khan, 47, was presented with the Inaugural America Abroad Media Award along with Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow and the International Centre on Non-violent Conflict (ICNC) at a function. Launched in 2012, the Sunday morning show "Satyamev Jayete", tackles some of India's most pressing social problems - forced abortions of unborn girls; domestic violence; child sexual abuse; alcoholism and treatment of the elderly. "I have no idea how the work that we started back home would interest somehow outside India," said Aamir Khan accepting the award in person making a rare exception to his practice of not attending award shows. "Me and my team are trying to do this show with love, because we feel that we are part of the problem and we are also part of the solution. And we need to find that. We need to question ourselves and look inside as opposed to pointing outside," he said after the ceremony. Aamir Khan, who was accompanied by his filmmaker wife Kiran Rao, said he is working on the next season of the show, which became so popular at home that it propelled him on to the cover of Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People In the World issue this year. "All my capabilities lie in the field of media and storytelling. So we try to combine our expertise and capabilities in storytelling and television and picking social issues we feel that can make a difference," he said.
Khan screened the foetal infanticide episode Sunday night at hotel for a small audience whose members audibly gasped as several women told their gruesome stories, according to the Washington Post. Aamir Khan said, though it is nice to be felicitated here, he is more concerned about Indian audience. "My main aim is to really work in India and to sensitise people about issues and see that we can find solutions to our own issues back home. I am looking to talking to Indians," he said. In the coming election season, Aamir Khan said he would like to see political parties making social justice and the needs of the common man as part of their agenda. When asked by a Pakistani journalist whether he would work for a Pakistani film, Aamir Khan answered in the affirmative. "I am a creative person. Whenever I receive an offer from any part of the world, which is of interest to me, I would like to do that." "The culture of India and Pakistan are the same. Our language is the same. There is a lot of similarities among us. So indeed if there is any offer of a film from Pakistan, and I like the script, I would certainly like to do that," he said. Bigelow, the other winner, is the director of "Hurt Locker", a 2008 American war film about a three-man bomb disposal team during the Iraq War, and "Zero Dark Thirty", where she chronicled America's decade-long hunt for Osama bin Laden. She is the only woman to have won an Oscar for Best Director, for "Hurt Locker". Founded by Peter Ackerman, the ICNC produces award-winning documentaries on the role of nonviolent resistance in promoting democratic change.

For Women
What are the most important things a woman can do to stay healthy? 1. Can you hear me now? Plug your ears before you blow out your eardrums Rocking out at home is one thing, but concerts, lawn mowers, or fireworks can damage your hearing permanently. Properly fitting earplugs can provide a marked reduction in the amount of sound energy you're exposed to. Cranking up the volume to 11 on your headphones can cause damage too, so listen at a reasonable decibel level. 2. Discover a workout you dig You know, the one you look forward to not because you can time it with with actual fun. Women who exercise because it makes them feel happier or more energized are more likely to keep it up than women who work out just to look better. 3. Don't apply mascara in the car One of the most common eye injuries: corneal abrasions caused by mascara wands. Youch! 4.You snooze, you win! Studies show that power naps can help you kill stress and recharge; just don't doze for more than a half hour. After 30 minutes, your body enters the deep stages of sleep, and studies show that if you wake up right before deep sleep, you'll feel more refreshed. 5. Score now, reap later: Sunglasses Swap your H&M aviators for grownup shades that block UVA and UVB rays, both of which up your risk of eye damage, including cataracts. 6. STOP...drinking your calories. Between 1995 and 2002, the number of calories swigged each day more than doubledand those from sugary quenchers like soda, fruit drinks, and alcohol quadrupled. . 7. STOP...asking your doc for an antibiotic every time you sniffle. Overusing antibiotics can lead to drugresistant bacteria, which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention call one of the world's biggest health challenges. The drugs also kill your body's good bacteria (like those that protect against yeasty beasties) along with the bad. 8. Score now, reap later: cast iron skillet Get this: The metal seeps out of the pan and into your food, increasing its iron content many times over. 9. Step into better-fitting sneaks The right shoe and fit can help correct for anatomical flaws like flat arches or overpronation and fend off overuse injuries. You'll get the best service from a store that specializes in running. 10. Don't Leave Home Without: Health insurance card Get insured now, before a problem shows up that will be considered preexisting if you shop for coverage later. 11. Don't Leave Home Without: Personal medical record After tumbling head-first over
your niece's Big Wheel, the list of prescription drugs you're taking won't exactly roll off your tongue especially if you're, um, unconscious. Line your wallet with a list of your meds (including supplements), allergies or drug sensitivities, the name and number of your primary-care doctor, conditions you're being treated for, and a brief family history of major medical problems. 12. Don't just think you can do it now you can! You'll increase your self-esteem if your "can do" attitude is based on real skills. Learn how to unclog the toilet, file your taxes, or hang those Ikea shelves. 13. STOPstepping out in four-inch stilettos. Stripper heels strain the joints from your toes all the way up to your lower back and can lead to nasty deformities like bunions and hammertoes. Stick with a height of two inches or less. 14. Score now, reap later: A sports helmet Whether you board or bike, look for a melon protector that conforms to the standards. A good helmet will fit snugly (no wobbling when you push it side to side) and sit level on your head (not tilted back) with the front edge no more than an inch above your eyebrows. 15. Dont Be a Dummy, Buckle Up Motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death in people ages 2 through 34. Seat belts save lives. 16. STOPwith the fad, cleansing, and detox diets. Beyond wreaking havoc on your metabolism, they make your hair do really bad things. That's because your mane is one of the body's fastest-growing tissues, but since it's also nonessential (unlike, say, brain cells), your locks are the first to go if your body lacks nutrients. And once your body is done shedding its more expendable parts, it's not long before the rest of you is in deep doo, too. 17. Honey, You Need a Better Bra Straps that are too thin or too tight can put pressure on the trapezius muscle (which spans your shoulders, neck, and upper back), causing pain in your upper body and even tension headaches. Quit squeezing your girls into an ill-fitting Maidenform today and save on Advil tomorrow. 18. STOPsporting talons instead of nails. The No. 1 place germs live on your body is beneath your fingernails. If you can't trim the habit, dig your claws into a bar of semi-soft soap twice a day. 19. Stick junior in a babybjorn When you use your hip as a baby hanger, structures in your back are compressed and joints, muscles, and discs become strained. Instead, distribute the little tyke's weight evenly across your spine by holding him in front, close to your bodyor try strapping him into a sling.
A mismatched lip-colour can totally wash out all the effort you may have put in getting ready for the evening. Its best to get the details right, so as to not miss the look you were aiming for! Make sure to try out lipstick before you put other makeup on your face. It could help avoid distractions that other loud makeup may bring in. According to most makeup artists, the best lipstick is always two shades darker than your natural lip colour. So if you are fair, go in for pastels and light shades. For dark and medium skin tones, chose deeper more fuller colours. If the lipstick you just bought turns out to be just a bit different than what you wanted, you can always adjust the shades by using a similar coloured liner. Find your perfect lip colour Corals, nudes, pinks, reds - theyre all big news for the next few months. We show you how to choose the right lip stick for your skin tone so you can
wear your colour with confidence Always choose a lip colour youre comfortable with it will make you feel and look confident. Heres how to choose a shade thats just right for you If you have fair skin Very bright shades, such as vivid corals, can drain paler complexions. A berry, slightly rosy tone is nice for more natural lips, so they look healthy and sensuous. A reddish lipstick used as a stain gives natural-looking lips and works well with a fair complexion, too. If you have medium-toned skin You will suit a light peach, pinkish rose or a sheer grape.Revlon ColorBurst in Blush is a gorgeous nude beige that complements medium-toned skins perfectly. Dont be afraid to experiment with this seasons coral shades too they can also enhance mid-toned complexions. If you have olive skin You can pull off rich shades at the deeper end of the colour spectrum. Darker skin can suit browns, plums and reds. Factor Lip Paint in Deep Red is a fabulous, intense crimson with a silky, not glossy, texture. On the more neutral scale, beiges can work well with olive skintones, too. If you have Asian skin You may have yellow undertones to your complexion, and your natural lip colour may be anything from pale pink to deep red with bluish tones. Warm pinks, tawny pinks, rich wines, deep berries and blue-toned reds will all work well with this colouring. If you have black skin Its best to avoid using lip shades that have cool pink undertones or textures that are too frosty or shimmery. Go for caramels, biscuit, toffees and brick reds. Tip: Check a new lip colour in indoor and outdoor light. The right shade will enhance your natural skin tone.

Labasa Football Association is trying its best to secure the services of Fijian international Roy Krishna for the upcoming Pacific Cup in Auckland. Labasa president Rayaz Khan said they are currently negotiating with the Auckland City striker about his inclusion. "We are in talks with Roy and want to have his services in the Pacific Cup. He is one of the best Fijian players and it will be a boost for us to have him in the team."
Apart from Krishna we are also looking at other players who are in New Zealand to be part of the team during the competition." While Khan could not divulge more information on the players, he did reveal that one of the guest players would be a goalkeeper who is all set to join the team in New Zealand. The Babasiga Lions are pooled with Ba, Queensland, Savusavu NZ and Nasinu NZ for the Pacific Cup which will be played from November 20-24.
Hindus have supported FIFA (Federation Internationale de Football Association) President Joseph S. Blatters call for tougher sanctions to be used to combat racism in football. Distinguished Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA), said that existing sanctions did not seem an effective deterrent and harsher sanctions were urgently needed. Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, stressed that continuing racism and discrimination in football had to be stopped immediately and FIFA should show strong will, seriousness and guts to deal with it. It was 2013 and prevalence of racism and discrimination in sports should not be acceptable. Rajan Zed argued that FIFA ; whose

promise was to use football as a symbol of hope and integration and which stood for promoting solidarity, regardless of gender, ethnic background, faith or culture; had failed to deliver on racism issue and an urgent intervention was needed in this direction. If FIFA continued to fail to control the incidents of racism, FIFA itself should be disciplined, Zed added. Zed further urged His Holiness Pope Francis and other religious leaders of the world to come out openly against racism in sports as we were all equal in the eyes of God. Civic Football Club lifted the Suva Football Association Local League trophy last Sunday after a lapse of 24 years. The Nabua based club laced with district reps overcame Northpole 2-0 in extra time of an exciting final at Bidesi Park. Veteran Pita Rabo and David Matavesi scored the goals which made the difference for the club which was founded by Narendra Prasad more than 30 years ago. Club president Ritesh Pratap said the victory was sweet for them as the title was eluding them for some seasons. "We had qualified for the quarterfinals on many occasions but could not progress further but this season with a good mix of hardworking and dedicated players, we managed to break the duck and win the title." "Our last win was in 1989 and it really
feels good to win the title after so long. The credit goes to the players, officials and supporters of the club who were there through the thick and thin of things." Civic received $1000 for winning the competition and the amount has been doubled by the team sponsors, Professional Security Services. Civic defeated Addisbrough 3-1 in the semifinal with Suva goalie Emori Ragata getting a brace and Eran Underwood scoring the other goal. The club now shifts its focus to the Southern Zone playoff of the National Club Championship. The zonal playoff of the National Club Championship will be played on December 7-8 at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori and Govind Park in Ba and the finals will be played in Nausori a week later.

Vancouver Whitecaps Fire Head Referee Dave Still Going Coach Martin Rennie Strong Fijis veteran referee Bobby Dave feels every morning to train for two hours Martin Rennie is out as coach of the 2012 -- his first season with the club -he still has what it takes to control matches and is not ready to hang his boots yet. The reporter caught up with Dave during the Masters Tournament in Suva over the weekend where he shared his experience of refereeing. Having entered the sporting arena as a boxer, the former water supply employee said refereeing has always kept him fit and going and he wants to continue for as long as his legs can carry him through. Referees should always be fit and should strictly adhere to the training programs that they set out for themselves. Planning is very vital and our field is more like that of an army officer and we should always be ready to serve when called up," he said. .Dave who residents in Bureta Street in Suva said the referees in the new millennium are very lucky to officiate international matches and go through various international workshops, something which he and the referees did not get to do much during their prime days. The match officials are very lucky as they get referees appointment in a very short span of time. Back then we used to start from the fourth official and from there we climb up to ranks of assistant referee and then finally after gaining experience, we would be allowed to officiate in the match as the referee but this has changed and we are seeing many new faces officiating these days both on the domestic and international scene." The 53-year-old still wakes up early and follows a strict diet which keeps him fit as he continues to officiate at club level football and does not hesitate to control big matches whenever called up. "I am always fit and ready to officiate and the Fiji FA officials know this," he quipped. Dave highly praises Rakesh Varman and says the former school teacher who is a FIFA badge holder remains the top whistleman in the country. Only whistle man who has been impressive so far in my opinion is Rakesh Varman as he is one of the best in the country at the moment. He is always closer to the scene of play and the laws of refereeing are at his finger tip which he uses to make the right decision on the spot." "Referees nowadays should be within the scene of play rather being left behind from the flow of the game." Referees play a very important role in the match and therefore it becomes their duty to be close enough to the scene of play and in the rule it says that we should be in 10 yards perimeter of the ball and if the referees are fit then they enter 5 yard of the play this keeps them closer to the action and avoids tension in the match," he added. He attributes his success to former referees Shameem Khan, Aziz Khan, Dheren Kewal, the late Leone Rakoroi, Mahen Singh and Hari Raj Naicker. Dave's sons Rajnish and Rohinish are also registered as referees with Suva Football Association and have controlled matches in a couple of Fiji FA organised tournaments. Vancouver Whitecaps. The Major League Soccer team says it's not renewing his contract beyond 2013. The Whitecaps (13-12-9) saw their Major League Soccer post-season hopes crushed when they lost their second last game of the season, 3-2 to the Colorado Rapids in Commerce City, Colo on Oct. 19. Vancouver finished the season in seventh place, with the Rapids (14-119) taking the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. Rennie became head coach of the Whitecaps on Nov. 1, 2011. He joined the team after the Carolina RailHawks, his former club, were eliminated from the United Soccer Leagues First Division's post-season. The 38-year-old Scot earned a Major League Soccer record of 24-25-19 over his two seasons in Vancouver. He led the Whitecaps to the playoffs in

making Vancouver the first Canadian team to ever qualify for the MLS postseason. The Whitecaps exited in the first round, losing to the eventual-champion Los Angeles Galaxy. Rennie did not have much more success outside of league play. Vancouver failed to win the Canadian championship and advance to the CONCACAF Champions League under his guidance. The Whitecaps did win the Cascadia Cup this season, a trophy awarded to the top team in head-to-head competition with the Seattle Sounders and Portland Timbers. It is Vancouver's only championship since joining MLS. In addition to the Whitecaps and RailHawks, Rennie has coached the Cleveland City Stars of the USL's Second Division and the Cascade Surge of the USL's Premier Development League.
