Biol/Chem 4900 (Independent Study) or Biol 3898 (Cooperative Education)

Generally, this is how getting into these classes takes: 1. Students are required to work with a faculty member and complete a written report (length depends on # of units) for assessment. For 1 unit, one needs to write a 7 page report; for 2 units, one needs a 9-page report; for 4 units, one needs a minimum of 12-15 pages total as indicated below (the LR section needs to be extensive as units increase). 2. Students need to discuss with instructor what topic to write about depending on their research/internship focus work. They then need to put those ideas in form of a one-page proposal & attach to the petition form. Next, students perform a literature search (library sources) on their topic (or use their experiences at place of work/research & readings) to compile the report. 3. Process: Go to the Department offices (Biology, SCN 429 & Chemistry next door) and ask for a petition to enroll in Biol/Chem 4900. For Biol 3898, pls visit: http://www20.csueastbay.edu/academic/academic-support/aace/career-tools/co-op.html. Here, download the forms required. Complete the petition and attach a 1-page proposal of what you will do as noted on the example below. 4. Take the petition & your proposal to the instructor, then leave it with Linda in SCN 113 or Charlene in SCN 131 for PHAP signature and the Deans by first week of classes or earlier. 5. After signatures, you will be enrolled in the class by second week of classes by Charlene or Linda. 6. Once registered: Pls meet with your instructor to discuss what you need to do as you do your research & prepare the paper. Instructors will provide feedback that will help students prepare their final report. Students can meet with instructor to discuss the progress report feedback during office hours. The final report is usually submitted by finals week or as determined by your instructor. Your instructor will grade your report and submit the final grade using the University grade reporting system.

Preparing Your Final Report

Your final report will take the following format: must follow APA style (6th edition of the APA Manual, not 5th). All reports must use double-spacing, font 12, following the APA writing style for margins, indents, subheadings, citations, references, etc. APA requires the use of Times New Roman font type.

Final Report Organization

Title of your Project: (title page 1, prepared as per APA Manual, page 41 & 229). Introduction: Next, write an section to introduce readers to your topic. Assume readers have no prior knowledge on your topic - 1 full page (2 paragraphs, page 2). Pls do not exceed the page limit! Method: How did you get your content for the report? Usually by doing research in the lab, field and reading peer-reviewed journal articles. 1/2 page (page 3). Pls do not exceed the page limit! Literature Review: This is where your main work will show when you do a detailed literature search dealing with your topic. You need to use various levels of heading as indicated on page 62 of the APA Manual (6th ed.,) to organize this section. For 1 unit you need 2-3 full pages (pages 4-6); for 2 units, you need 3-4 full pages in this section (pages 47). For 3 units you need 4-5 full pages (pages 4-8). For 4 units, you need 5-6 full pages in this section (pages 4-9). Conclusion: summarize the key findings from your project/research in one short -3/4 page section. Pls do not exceed the page limit! References: include all your sources used in the Introduction & Literature Review sections (at least 10-15 sources). These must be done as indicated in the APA Manual, Chapter 7. (Pls do not use a Bibliography for this section).
