5.4.2. Four test points will be taken and are selected to give full coverage of the curve
and include from minimum continuous stable flow to 120% BEP and include
rated flow.
5.4.3. Vacuum suppression testing the pump is supplied from a closed tank with a
constant liquid level. Suction conditions are varied by the use of shop air to
increase pressure above atmospheric and a vacuum pump to reduce pressure
below atmospheric.
5.4.4. Suction valve throttling this method is only utilized if the pump capacity
exceeds that of a closed test loop and the pump is tested on a sump. The pump
is supplied from an open sump with a constant liquid level. A booster pump
may or may not be utilized to simulate suction pressure above atmospheric
pressure depending on the characteristics of the pump. Suction pressure is
reduced by throttling a valve on the suction piping of the pump in conjunction
with shutting off the booster pump.
5.4.5. During NPSH testing, a flow is set and held constant while the suction pressure
is reduced incrementally. The total developed head is monitored to determine
the suction pressure point where a 3% drop in total developed head is
observed. The temperature of the test water is taken at this point to determine
vapor pressure. NPSH is calculated in accordance via the latest revision of the
Hydraulic Institute test standard.

and capacity or at other conditions mutually agreed upon by Goulds
and customer.

4.2. Test Environment
4.2.1. The test shall be conducted on the shop test floor. No
modifications will be made to the existing environment, (which is
neither free field nor reverberant). The pump on test will be
mounted, as it would normally be for a standard hydraulic
performance test. No special set-ups will be performed to
duplicate customer's conditions except as mentioned in this
procedure.
4.3. Background Sound Level
4.3.1. The background sound level, with pump uncoupled driver running
shall be determined at one of the microphone locations to be
used when conducting the test. The readings at each location, with
the pump running, should exceed the background levels by at least
ten (10) dB in each octave band of interest. When the difference is
less, corrections should be applied as in Figure No. 1. If the
difference between the measured sound and the background
sound in any octave band is less than three (3) dB, a valid sound
measurement of the machine cannot be made in that octave band.
NOTE: Octave bands of interest are defined as those where the sound pressure
levels produced by the machine are within forty (40) dB of the highest measured
octave band level, but in no case are levels below fifty (50) dB considered
important.
4.4. Sound Measurement Procedure
4.4.1. The following should be measured: All Pass, Octave Bands and
"A" Band all at the primary microphone location.
4.4.2. The period of time during which the measurements are made
should be long enough to allow an average reading to be taken
with the slow response setting of the meter.
4.4.3. The microphone should be in the grazing incidence position and no
reflecting surfaces or personnel should be within 1 meter of it.
Tripod mounting of the meter is desirable.
4.5. Warning
4.5.1. Corrections for background sound level as described in Paragraph
4.3 do not eliminate effects of extraneous sound from components
associated with the system but not part of the equipment to be
tested; that is; piping, valves, drivers, gears, vibrating bases, etc.
Separation of the various sound sources may require special
measurement techniques.

5. CALCULATION & INTERPRETATION OF READINGS
5.1. Corrections
5.1.1. Readings should be corrected for background sound. Calibration
corrections, if required, shall be taken into account.
5.2. Average Sound Levels & Sound Pressure Levels
5.2.1. In general, the average of the corrected readings should not be
calculated, since this can give misleading information. In the case
of small, relatively non-directional sources, the average may be
taken to give a convenient single number reading. When this is the
case, the average of the corrected sound pressure level readings may
be calculated according to the following rules:
5.2.2. Maximum Variation Five (5) dB or Less
If the maximum variation in corrected sound pressure levels is five
(5) dB or less, average the sound pressure levels
arithmetically.
5.2.3. Maximum Variation Five (5) dB to Ten (10) dB
If the maximum variation exceeds ten (10) dB, average according to
the equation below:
L =10 Log
10
1/ n (Antilog L1/10 +Antilog L2/10 +--- Antilog
Ln/10)
Where L =Average sound Level dBA, or band average sound
pressure level, in decibels.
L1 =Sound level dBA, or band sound pressure level, in decibels at
location No. 1.
Ln =Sound level dBA, or band sound pressure level, in decibels at
location No. n.
n =Number of measurement locations.
5.3. Presentation of Data
5.3.1. A test report shall be supplied and shall give the following
information:
5.3.2. Make, model, and serial numbers of instrument used.
5.3.3. Tabulation of test data:
5.3.3.1. Corrected sound level measurements at each
microphone location (dBA), and corrected octave band
sound pressure levels.
5.3.3.2. Background sound level at one (1) location (dBA), and
octave band sound pressure levels.
