PUERTO LACUSTRE DE SAN JORGE
Inicia La Aventura.
A 10 minutos de la ciudad de Rivas se encuentra
el tranquilo poblado de San Jorge, localizado
en las costas del Gran Lago de Nicaragua. Su
puerto, es el punto de arribo y salida de varias
de las embarcaciones que prestan servicio de
transportacin, convirtindolo as en la princi-
pal va de acceso a la Isla de Ometepe.
Alrededor del puerto de San Jorge usted podr
degustar de excelentes platillos preparados en
los restaurantes que se encuentran frente a la
playa, mientras disfruta de la vista panormica
en el horizonte de la Isla de Ometepe.
ISLA DE OMETEPE
Un Oasis de Paz
La Isla de Ometepe es una joya de 276 Km
2
si-
tuada en el Gran Lago de Nicaragua, es consi-
derada la isla ms grande del mundo en un lago
de Agua Dulce. Ometepe se encuentra ente los
11 grados y 23 y 11 grados, 36 de latitud
norte y entre los 85 grados 26 y 85 grados
43 de longitud oeste. En la parte sur occidental
del gran Lago de Nicaragua dista de San Jorge
12 Km. De la punta de Jess Mara y de Moyogal-
pa a San Jorge 17 Km.
Su nombre se deriva de las palabras nhuatl
ome signifca dos y tepetl signifca monta-
a o cerro, Lugar de dos Montaas. Ometepe
ha sido el refugio y la tierra de muchas tribus
que se asentaron en estas tierras dejando un
sus propios legados en la historia y desarrollo
de la Isla.
Se estima una poblacin de 42,000 habitantes,
donde slo 136Km2 estn poblados, el resto
de su extensin se dedica esencialmente a la
agricultura en pequeas comunidades rurales.

El Departamento de Rivas se encuentra localiza-
do en la regin Pacfco Sur de Nicaragua, posee
una extensin territorial de 2161.82 km
2
, y se
encuentra a una altura aproximada de 70 msnm.
Fue fundado en el siglo XVIII bajo el nombre de
Villa de la Pursima Concepcin de Rivas. Actual-
mente se estima una poblacin de aproximada
de 170,000 habitantes.
Los municipios que conforman el Departamento
son Potos, Buenos Aires, Beln, Tola, San Juan
del Sur, Crdenas, San Jorge, Moyogalpa, Al-
tagracia y Rivas, esta ltima es la cabecera de-
partamental, cuya ubicacin estratgica sobre
la carretera panamericana la convierte en una
excelente conexin entre las ciudades tursti-
cas de Granada, Managua y con Peas Blancas,
frontera sur con Costa Rica, que se encuentra a
unos 35 minutos.
Uno de los principales atractivos del Departa-
mento de Rivas, es el Gran Lago de Nicaragua
o Cocibolca, del cual se cree se form en el
perodo Pleistoceno, producto del hundimiento
tectnico de la antigua llanura del Pacfco y la
acumulacin de aguas fuviales, aislando de esta
manera los volcanes de la cordillera de los Ma-
rrabios, y las dos masas de agua que compren-
den el Lago de Managua o Xolotln y el Lago de
Nicaragua o Cocibolca.
En l se encuentra la Isla de Ometepe, en la que
destacan sus dos fascinantes volcanes, el Volcn

Blessed isthmus between
The Sweet Sea and the Pacific Ocean
The Department of Rivas is located in the South
Pacifc region of Nicaragua, it has a territo-
rial extension of 2161.82 km
2
, and it is of an
approximate height of 70 msnm. It was founded
in the XVIII century under the name of Villa de
la Pursima Concepcin de Rivas. At present,
its population is considered of approximate
170,000 inhabitants.
The municipalities that forms the Department
are Potos, Buenos Aires, Belen, Tola, San Juan
del Sur, Cardenas, San Jorge, Moyogalpa, Alta-
gracia and Rivas, this last one is the departa-
mental head whose strategic location on the
Pan-American highway transforms it into an
excellent connection among the tourist cities
of Granada, Managua and with Peas Blancas,
south border with Costa Rica that is about 35
minutes away from The Port of San Jorge.
One of the main attractions of the Department
of Rivas, is the Great Lake of Nicaragua or Co-
cibolca, of which is believed it was formed in
the Pleistocene period, product of the tectonic
sinking of the old plain of the Pacifc and the
accumulation of fuvial waters, isolating in this
way the volcanoes of the mountain range of the
Marrabios, and the two masses of water that
comprise the Lake of Managua or Xolotln and
the Lake of Nicaragua or Cocibolca. In its wa-
ters, the Island of Ometepe is found, in which
highlight their two fascinating volcanoes, the
Concepcin Volcano (1610 msnm) and the Made-
ras Volcano (1395 msnm), and the diversity of
fora and fauna that is in it.
THE PORT OF SAN JORGE
there begins The Adventure.
San Jorges peaceful town is located at 10 mi-
nutes away from the city of Rivas. It is located
on the coasts of the Great Lake of Nicaragua.
Its port is the arrival point and exit of several of
the crafts that provide transportation service,
transforming it in this way into the main access
road to Ometepe Island.
Around San Jorges port you will be able to be
delighted by the excellent prepared plates in
the restaurants that are in front of the beach,
while you enjoy of the panoramic view in the
horizon of the Island of Ometepe.
OMETEPE ISLAND
An Oasis of Peace
Ometepe Island is a jewel of 276 Km
2
located
in the Great Lake of Nicaragua, it is conside-
red the biggest island in a lake of Sweet Water.
Ometepe is located in the 11 degrees and 23
and 11 degrees, 36 of north latitude and
among the 85 degrees 26 and 85 degrees 43
of west longitude.
Its name is derived from the nahutl words
ome, which means two and tepetl, which
means mountain or hill, Place of two Moun-
tains. Ometepe has been the refuge and the
land of a lot of tribes that settled down in these
lands leaving an own legacy in the island.
Its population is considered in about 42,000 in-
habitants where only 136Km2 are populated,
the rest of its extension is dedicated essentially
to the agriculture in small rural communities.
Its temperature average oscillates between the
28 and 32 Celsius degrees, which spread to go

(1610msnm) y su hermano gemelo El Volcn Ma-
deras (1395msnm), que ofrecen una gran varie-
dad de ecosistemas y atractivos tursticos natu-
rales como ros, cascadas, ojos de agua, playas
y humedales, que se caracterizan por su estado
casi virgen.
Para una mayor comprensin, podemos dividir
la isla en tres regiones; el rea del volcn Con-
cepcin que se extiende desde Altagracia por
el noreste hasta San Jos del sur en el costado
suroeste del volcn, la zona tiene una exten-
sin de 127 Km2 aproximadamente, con mayor
densidad poblacional, bosques de conservacin
y vegetacin fuertemente degradados.
En las faldas del volcn se encuentran varios po-
blados en donde se hayan las principales activi-
dades productivas: La agricultura y la pecuaria.
La sanda es el cultivo que predomina en esta
zona, seguida por el pltano y el ajonjol.
En la parte estrecha de la isla se forma el Istmo
Istin, cuya parte ms angosta es de menos de
4 kilmetros, cuando el invierno es provechoso
las aguas lo cubren completamente como si es-
tuviera la isla dividida en dos partes.
La zona central de la isla comprende el Istmo
Sitian desde las faldas del volcn Concepcin
hasta los poblados de Balges y Mrida al su-
roeste, con una extensin de 69 Km2 aproxima-
damente. Los suelos son de textura fna arcillo-
sa, los cuales brindan condiciones ptimas para
el desarrollo agropecuario. Los cultivos que pre-
dominan son: el arroz, el pltano y el pasto.
La actividad ganadera es fuente generadora de
empleos, as como la insipiente actividad pes-
quera de Santo Domingo.
La zona del Volcn Maderas, incluye todo el
Volcn Maderas, con una extensin de 80 km
2
,
presenta una topografa variable e irregular, con
suelos rocosos y un relieve montaoso.
La altura del volcn Maderas es de 1,395 msnm,
la vegetacin es espesa y con un buen grado
de conservacin, ah la actividad agrcola que
predomina es el cultivo del Caf seguido de los
cultivos de arroz, maz y pltano.
Su temperatura promedio oscila entre los 28 y
32 grados centgrados, las cuales tienden a bajar
a 30 en los meses de Noviembre a Diciembre. La
estacin lluviosa inicia en el mes de Mayo hasta
el mes de Octubre.
Es usual, que durante la poca lluviosa aparez-
can pequeos chubascos de 30 minutos de du-
racin y posteriormente salga un sol brillante,
no en vano, algunos turistas le llaman la Isla
del eterno verano. Visitar la Isla de Ometepe
es una excelente oportunidad para disfrutar de
los verdes ms intensos de la naturaleza que en
ella habita.
La Isla de Ometepe est estructuralmente for-
mada por el municipio de Moyogalpa y el Mu-
nicipio de Altagracia. Moyogalpa es el principal
puerto de ingreso de turistas y comercio a la Isla
de Ometepe, all diariamente atracan embarca-
ciones medianas y ferrys desde el puerto de San
Jorge que cumplen con itinerarios que inician
desde tempranas horas de la maana.

down to 30 in the months of November to Dec-
ember. The rainy season begins in the month of
May until the month of October.
It is very common in the rainy time small
showers of 30 minutes and later on to have a
shining sun, some tourists called it, the Island of
the eternal summer, this is an excellent oppor-
tunity to enjoy the intense greens of the nature
of the island.
Ometepe Island is structurally formed by the
Municipality of Moyogalpa and the Municipa-
lity of Altagracia. Moyogalpa is the main port
of tourists entrance and trade to Ometepe
Island, there daily medium crafts make shore
and ferries from San Jorges port that fulfll the
itineraries that begins from early hours in the
morning.
The island has an accidentally topography with
the shape of an irregular eight, standing out
in each circle its two volcanoes: The Concep-
cin Volcano (1647msnm) and its twin brother
The Maderas Volcano (1395 msnm) that offers a
great variety of ecosystems and natural tourist
attractions as rivers, cascades, eyes of water,
beaches and wetlands that are characterized by
their almost virgin state.
For a bigger understanding, we divided the
island in three regions. The area of the Con-
cepcin volcano, which extends from Altagra-
cia in the northeast to San Jos del Sur in the
southwest side of the volcano, the area has an
extension of 127 Km2 approximately, with bi-
gger population density, conservation forests
and strongly degraded vegetation.
In the laps of the volcano there are several
towns where the main productive activities are:
the agriculture and the fshing activity. The cul-
tivation that prevails in this area is the water
melon, followed by the banana and the sesa-
me.
In the narrow part of the island, the Istin isth-
mus is formed, whose narrower part is less than
4 kilometers, when the winter is heavy, and the
waters cover it completely, looks like if the is-
land were divided in two parts.
The central area of the island includes the is -
thmus of Istin from the laps of the Concepcin
volcano to the regions of Balges and Mrida
to the southwest, with an extension of 69 Km2
approximately. The soils are of loamy fne tex-
ture, which offer good conditions for the agri-
cultural development.
The cultivations that prevail are: rice, banana
and grass. The cattle activity is generating sour-
ces of employments, as well as Santo Domingos
insipient fshing activity.
The area of the Maderas Volcano, includes the
whole Maderas Volcano, with an extension of
80 square kilometers, it presents a variable
and irregular topography, with rocky soils and a
mountainous relief. The height of the Maderas
volcano is 1,395 mts.
The vegetation is thick and with a good con-
servation degree, there the agriculture activity
that prevails is the cultivation of Coffee follo-
wed by the cultivations of rice, corn and ba-
nana.

COMO LLEGAR A LA ISLA DE OMETEPE
Vehculo particular
Llegar hasta la isla de Ometepe es muy fcil,
pues se encuentra conectada a la ciudad de Ri-
vas a travs de una excelente carretera asfal-
tada, si el viaje lo hace en vehculo particular
desde Managua, usted deber tomar la carre-
tera panamericana sur, hasta llegar a la roton-
da-empalme de Rivas, donde deber girar hacia
el Norte hasta el puerto de San Jorge para em-
barcarse hacia Moyogalpa, municipio de la isla
de Ometepe, y si viaja en vehculo desde Peas
Blancas, siga derecho hasta llegar al mismo em-
palme en Rivas.
Buses interurbanos
En Managua, la terminal de buses hacia Rivas
se encuentra localizada en el mercado Huem-
bes en la parte oriental de la ciudad. El precio
del pasaje oscila entre los C$40.00 y C$50.00
(USD$3.00 y USD$4.00), dependiendo del servi-
cio que desee, ya sea expreso o regular. El hora-
rio para los buses que recorren los 120 km hasta
Rivas, es amplio y variado, con salidas progra-
madas cada hora desde las 5:00 a.m. hasta las
6:00 p.m. Otra opcin es tomar los autobuses
que salen hacia la frontera de Peas Blancas e
indicarle al conductor o ayudante su deseo de
bajarse en la ciudad de Rivas para conectar con
el puerto de San Jorge.
Una vez en Rivas usted puede contratar un taxi
que por menos de un dlar lo trasladar hasta
el puerto de San Jorge para embarcarse hacia la
Isla. Si usted planifca llegar a la isla de Ome-
tepe incursionando en Nicaragua por la frontera
con Costa Rica en lneas de autobuses interna-
cionales, le recomendamos de igual manera,
indicar al conductor su parada en la ciudad de
Rivas. Casi todas las lneas de buses internacio-
nales como Ticabus, Transnica, Central Line que
salen por la maana de San Jos o zonas del nor-
te de Costa Rica, logran conexin con los ferrys
que lo llevarn a la Isla de Ometepe.
Va acutica
El Puerto de San Jorge es administrado por la
Empresa Nacional de Puertos y consta de un
muelle o atracadero para embarcaciones pe-
queas y medianas, una bodega y dos amplios
parqueos uno techado y el otro al aire libre, con

Particular vehicle
To arrive to Ometepe island is very easy, because
it is connected to the city of Rivas through an
excellent asphalted highway, if you go driving in
particular vehicle from Managua, you will take
the Pan-American south highway, until arriving
to the round-connection of Rivas, where you
will turn toward the North to San Jorges port
to go aboard toward Moyogalpa, municipality of
Ometepe Island, and if the travel is by vehicle
from Peas Blancas, go straight to arrive to the
same connection in Rivas.
Intercity buses
In Managua, the bus stop to Rivas is located
at the Huembes market, located in the eas-
tern part of the city. The bus fare is between
C$40.00 and C$50.00 (USD$3.00 and USD$4.00),
either depending on the service you want to,
expressed or regular. The schedule for the buses
for the 120 kms to Rivas is wide and varied, with
programmed departures every hour from 5:00
oclock a.m. up to 6:00 oclock p.m. Another
option is to take the buses that come from the
border of Peas Blancas and to indicate the dri-
ver or assistant your desire to get off in the city
of Rivas to connect with San Jorges port.
Once in Rivas you can get a taxi that for less
than a dollar will drive you to San Jorges port
to go aboard toward the Island. If you plan to
arrive at Ometepe Island coming through the
south border with Costa Rica using the servi-
ce of international buses, we recommend you,
in a same way, to indicate the driver to make
a stop in the city of Rivas. Almost all of the
international buses as Ticabus, Transnica, Cen-
tral Line that depart from San Jos in the mor-
ning or from areas of the north of Costa Rica,
achieve connection with the ferries that will
take you to Ometepe Island.
Via aquatic
San Jorges Port is administered by the National
Company of Ports and it consists of a pier or
dock for small and medium crafts, a small ware-
house and two wide parking one roofed and the
other one outdoors, with security and vigilance
Desde la ciudad de Granada
Otra opcin para llegar a la Isla de Ometepe es
desde la ciudad de Granada, existe una embar-
cacin que sale desde el Muelle municipal, ubi-
cado al norte de la ciudad en el Malecn, hasta
el Muelle puerto de Gracias en el municipio de
Altagracia. Los das de salida de Granada son los
jueves y lunes a las 2:00 p.m. y llega al puerto
de Gracia a las 6:00p.m.
BREVE RESENA HISTORICA
Isla de Ometepe
Manuel Hamilton Silva Monge
El poblamiento de Ometepe es muy antiguo, sa-
bemos que a Suramrica llegaron los Chibchas y
Tiaguanacos, que ocuparon la franja del Pacfco
y por ende la Isla de Ometepe, estas primeras
etnias eran recolectoras de frutas, grandes pes-
cadores y cazadores. Esta primera migracin
ocurri aproximadamente unos diez mil aos
antes de Cristo, por esta razn se crean autc-
tonos; esta raza nos hered la estatura baja,
el pelo liso y ese color que no es negro ni es
blanco, sino ms cobrizo.
Tambin fueron los primeros en elaborar utensi-
lios de roca como morteros, tazones y algo muy
notable los entierros los hacan usando lpidas
de piedras planas de 72 pulgadas de largo por
36 de ancho. Podemos constatarlo en los entie-
rros encontrados en los Ramos, San Jos del Sur
y Los ngeles.
Poblamiento de Omtepe
Los Mangues o Chorotegas
La rama chorotega conocida como los Mangues
llegaron en el siglo III d.C. y la migracin ms
fuerte de los chorotegas ocurri en el siglo VI y
VII, rpidamente se mezclaron con los autcto-
nos y mejoraron la tcnica de la labranza de las
rocas, as continuaron esculpiendo la estatua-
ria y la escritura en rocas en forma de grifos,
dando as la grabacin de los petroglifos. Segn

1,2,3 and Estrella del Sur have differed services

From the city of Granada
Another option of arriving at Ometepe Island is
from the city of Granada, a craft that departs
from the municipal dock, located to the north of
the city in the Pier exists, to the dock port Puer-
to de Gracias in the municipality of Altagracia.

Ometepes Settlement
Ometepes settlement is very old, we know that
the Chibchas and Tiaguanaco arrived from the
South America, they occupied the fringe of the
Pacifc and consequently the Island of Ometepe,
and these frst ethnics were collectors of fruits
and big fshermen, also hunters. This frst mi-
gration happened approximately ten thousand
years before Christ, for this reason they felt
autochthonous; this race inherited us the low
stature, the fat hair and that color that neither
is black nor white, more coppery.
They were also the frst ones in elaborating rock
utensils like mortars, bowls and there is some-
thing very remarkable: they made funeral urns
made by using tablets of plane stones of 72
inches long for 36 of wide. We can verify them
in the funerals found in Los Ramos, San Jos del
Sur and Los ngeles.
The Mangues Or Chorotegas
The well-known branch chorotega better known
as Mangues arrived in the III century A.C., and
the strongest migration of chorotegas happened
in VI and VII centuries, quickly mixed with the
autochthonous and improving the technique
of the farm of rocks, they continued this way
sculpting the statuary and the writing in rocks
in glyphs giving in this way the recording of the
petroglyphs. According to Wolfang Haberlan,
these farmers and fshermen carved many of our
statuaries and ceramic pieces. The Chorotegas
populated the regions of the Pacifc and Center
of Nicaragua and they had a government orga-
nized by nine members, where each member
represented a star of the solar system and their
capita were in the Diri.

Los Mayas
Hay muchas evidencias que los mayas vinieron
ya en sus perodos de exterminio posiblemen-
te a mediados del siglo X. Tenan una cermica
muy sobresaliente, se cree que habitaron un
pueblo llamado Esquipulas en el que se encuen-
tran muchas reliquias de cermica, jade y hasta
fguras zoomorfas de oro.
Descubrimiento
Cuando Gil Gonzlez lleg a San Jorge o sea las
costas de Nicarao Calli; se qued asombrado al
ver el lindo paisaje que presentaba la isla con
sus dos volcanes, esto ocurri as: La Mar Dul-
ce (Lago Cocibolca o Lago de Nicaragua) fue
descubierto el 21 de enero de 1522 y el 12 de
abril de 1523 en nombre de su majestad tom
posesin.

Sus animales sagrados eran las guacamayas y
las loras a las que llamaban churis; cultivaban
mucho los rboles de nspero al cual llamaban
nunosapot, a ello se debe que en la isla existan
muchos rboles de nspero y aves exticas como
las loras en el Volcn Maderas, aunque las gua-
camayas es un ave extinta en Ometepe.
Los Nahuas
Por ltimo en el siglo IX y X llegaron los Nahoas
o Nahuas. stos poblaron el Istmo de Rivas y su
ciudad principal fue Nicarao Call, estos convir-
tieron en Isla sagrada nuestra nsula, stos al
igual que los Mangues o Chorotegas llegaron de
Mxico y trajeron sus religiones y costumbres.
Segn la mitologa vinieron Ticomega y Mahua-
tega ciudades mticas, pero en la realidad vi-
nieron de Huchue Tlapayn, actualmente, Tula,
Mxico.
Fueron los Nahuas los que dieron el toque fnal
a nuestra cultura aborigen, mejoraron las tc-
nicas en la cermica, refnando las fnezas en
la elaboracin y decoracin, as como el uso de
representaciones de animales en el totemismo.
Aumentaron los rituales a Quetzalcoatl, a Quia-

The Nahuas
Lastly in the IX and X centuries, the Nahoas or

or Chorotegas, arrived from Mexico and brought
their religions and customs. According to the
mythology they came from Ticomega and Ma-
huatega, which were mythical cities, but in
true, they came from Tlapayn from Huchue,
today Tula, Mexico.
The Nahuas where those who gave a fnal touch
to our aboriginal culture; they improved the te-
chniques in the ceramic, refning the fneness in
the elaboration and decoration, as well as the
use of representations of animals in the tote-
mism. The rituals increased to Quetzalcatl, to
Quiateot and many deities like Xochiquetzal the
goddess of love, to the god Volcano, to the To-
nati or the god sun. These religious activities
were practice in the diverse sources of water
that now exist in Ometepe overalls in the river
El Buen Suceso, Ilcue, Tichana and in the vents
of the volcano. The ceramic of the moon and
the incensories are attributed to the Nahuas.
The Mayan
There are many evidences that the Mayan po-
ssibly came in their periods of extermination by
the middle of the X century. They had a very
high-lighted ceramic, it is believed that they in-
habited a town called Esquipulas, where there
are many ceramic relics, jade and also zoomor-
phic fgures made of gold.
Discovery
When Gil Gonzlez arrived in San Jorge or be-
tter to say the costs of Nicarao Calli; he was as-
tonished when seeing the pretty landscape that
presented the island with its two volcanoes.
This happened this way: The Sweet Sea (Lake
Cocibolca or Lake of Nicaragua) was discovered
on January 21st, 1522 and, on April 12th, 1523
on behalf of its majesty, he took possession.

famoso en las festas patronales de San Diego
de Alcal.
Estos grupos hacen varias presentaciones pbli-
cas durante las festas patronales de Moyogalpa
y Altagracia, sin embargo tambin pueden ser
contratados para presentaciones privadas en
cualquier punto de la isla, si desea mayor infor-

Otro grupo de danza interesante es el de la co-
munidad indgena de Las Pilas, quienes durante
su presentacin personifcan mitos y leyendas
de la Isla.
Un representante de la cultura ometepina, es
el poeta y compositor Sr.Julio Guilln, egresa-
do del conservatorio nacional de msica en los
aos 60, llev su pasin a la isla y se convirti
en uno de los precursores de la interpretacin
de bandas musicales. Actualmente su repertorio
cuenta con ms 50 canciones propias, inspiradas
en la vida cotidiana, la picarda de su gente y
bellos paisajes de la isla.
Francisco Hernndez de Crdoba emprendi la
exploracin de La Mar Dulce y de la posible co-
municacin con el ocano Atlntico. Este tena
por acompaantes a los capitanes, Hernando de
Soto, Ruy Daz y Sebastin de Benalczar. Ms
tarde, Diego Lpez de Salcedo comision a Ga-
briel de Rojas explorar las Islas del gran Lago
de Nicaragua as que ste con Diego Machuca y
Martn de Este, fueron los primeros espaoles
que llegaron a las islas del Lago Cocibolca (La
Mar Dulce) entre ellas la Isla de Ometepe.
Evangelizacin
En 1610 vinieron a Ometepe los frailes de la or-
den franciscana, quienes nos ensearon la reli-
gin cristiana y el cambio de la lengua; que por
mandato de la corona se deban imponer nuevas
costumbres, nuevo idioma y nuevas creencias.
Fueron los franciscanos los que cambiaron a los
dioses aborgenes por los santos cristianos.
Los Cementerios
Nuestros aborgenes acostumbraban enterrar a
sus muertos en las cercanas de sus tribus, por
esta razn se encuentran muchas urnas fune-
rarias y artefactos de piedra y de cermica en
sitios dispersos de la isla, pues a sus deudos los
enterraban con todas sus pertenencias.
Los conquistadores impusieron las costumbres
de enterrar en un solo sitio a los difuntos; es por
eso que fundaron dos cementerios, uno en Mo-
yogalpa y el otro en Altagracia. El de Moyogalpa
estaba situado en la parte sur de la poblacin
que ahora est en el centro de la misma y en Al-
tagracia en las afueras cerca de Tagizapa. Con
el nacimiento de las municipalidades en 1835
se fundaron los cementerios actuales tanto en
Altagracia como en Moyogalpa.
Fueron los mismos colonizadores los que cam-
biaron las costumbres de enterrar en ollas de
barro por el uso de madera con los que se ha-
cen los atades. En la actualidad Ometepe es
un atractivo turstico por su riqueza histrica,
antropolgica y arqueolgica, adems de playas
y paisajes, tambin la hospitalidad que ofrece-
mos los isleos.
CULTURA EN LA ISLA DE OMETEPE
La danza y tradiciones de Ometepe pueden ser
disfrutadas a travs de dos grupos de danza fo-
lklrica, Xochipil y Renacimiento; ambos de la
comunidad de San Jos del Sur. Dentro de su re-

The Cemeteries
Our aboriginal accustomed to bury their dead
people in the surroundings of their tribes, for
this reason many funeral urns and stone devices
of ceramic are dispersed at different places of
the island, because they used to bury their kind-
reds with all of their belongings.
The conquerors imposed the customs of burying
in a single place to the deceases; it is for that
reason that they founded two cemeteries, one
in Moyogalpa and the other one in Altagracia.
That of Moyogalpa was located in the south part
of the region that at the present time is located
in the center of the same one, and the other
one outside Altagracia, near Tagizapa. With the
birth of the municipalities in 1835, the current
cemeteries were founded as much in Altagracia
as in Moyogalpa.
They were the same settlers who changed the
tradition of burying their dead ones in pots of
clay for the use of coffns made of wood. At
the present time, Ometepe is attractive for its
historical, anthropological and archaeological
wealth, besides its beaches and landscapes,
also the hospitality that the islanders offer.
CULTURE IN OMETEPE ISLAND
Ometepes dances and traditions can be en-
joyed through two groups of folkloric dance,
Xochipil and Renacimiento; both of them from
the community of San Jos del Sur. Among their
repertory it is the Dances of the Zompopo,
famous during the patron parties of San Diego
de Alcal.
These groups make several public performances
during the patron parties of Moyogalpa and Al-
tagracia; however, they can also be hired for
private performances at any point of the island,
for further information contact Rubn Rivera in
Hotel Charco Verde.
Another group of interesting dance is that of the
indigenous community of Las Pilas who perso-
nify myths and legends of the Island during its
performing.
A representative of the Ometepe culture is the
poet and composer Mr.Julio Guilln, graduated
from the National Conservatory of Music in the
years 60s, he took his passion to the island and
he became one of the precursors of the inter-
pretation of musical bands. At the present, his
repertory counts with more than 50 own songs,
inspired by the daily life, its peoples roguery
and beautiful landscapes of the island.
TRANSPORTE COLECTIVO INTERNO EN LA ISLA
Ometepe cuenta con un transporte interno co-
lectivo que conecta los principales puntos y zo-
nas de Moyogalpa, Altagracia, Balge, Mrida y
San Ramn, esta red interna conecta la mayora
de atractivos tursticos y hoteles. Si usted cuen-
ta con poco presupuesto, esta puede ser una al-
ternativa econmica para moverse dentro de la
isla. Le recomendamos preguntar en el hotel o
albergue la hora exacta de parada en el hotel.
TRANSPORTE TURSTICO
Otra alternativa que le sugerimos es contratar
los servicios privados o semi privados de trans-
porte turstico que estn disponibles a su llega-
da al puerto de Moyogalpa.
Los precios de traslados varan segn el servicio
que solicite, estos oscilan entre USD$10 a $30
por un transfer a su hotel o bien, puede alqui-
lar un microbs por hora o por da para toda
su travesa alrededor la Isla, cuyo precio oscila
entre USD$60 USD$100 con capacidad de hasta
8 personas.
Para su seguridad y comodidad, los transportis-
tas tursticos se han asociado a la COOSTRATO
(Cooperativa de Transporte turstico de Omete-
pe) para prestarle un mejor servicio y garanti-
zar el perfecto estado de la unidad de transpor-
te que le llevar por la isla.
CERMICA DE OMETEPE
La cermica en Ometepe comienza a tener ma-
yor desarrollo en el perodo formativo, 1500
aos a.C.; durante este perodo comienza la
difusin y los primeros intercambios caracters-
ticos de la cermica monocroma de color rojo y
negro, en ella vemos cuencas trpodes, cuencas
sin soporte y platos de todo tamao.
En Ometepe tambin se puede encontrar cer-
mica del perodo zonado (en zonas), 500 aos
a.C. en grandes cantidades, durante este pero-
do se comienza la aplicacin de engobe rojo, y
el color negro de manera (zonada), en vasijas
y ollas grandes utilitarias, en este perodo de
incisiones, esgrafados, estofadas en pintura
negativa en fguras zoomorfas como lagartos,
sapos y serpientes.
En el perodo clsico 500 aos d.C. se desarrolla
la policroma, considerado el de mayor esplen-
dor y nace La Cermica Luna, propia de la
isla que va desde Bicroma, Tricroma y Policro-
ma. Los colores que se destacan son en blanco,
el negro brillante y el rojo. Durante este pero-
do se elaboraron motivos solares, calendarios,
zoomorfos como el lagarto y antropomorfos.
En el perodo policromo medio 800 a 1350 aos
D.C., la cermica adquiere infuencia del nor-
te, la serpiente emplumada toma notoriedad
as como jaguares, grecas escalonadas y formas
ovoides; aumentan el uso de urnas funerarias y
la aplicacin es con base blanca o crema, con
decoraciones en rojo, negro y anaranjado.
Ya en el ltimo perodo, llamado Policromo tar-
do, en la cermica se representan a los dio-
ses como Quetzalcoatl, Tlatoc, Quiateot entre
otros, en este aumenta el uso del gris perla, el
amarillo y con mayor entonacin el anaranja-
do; durante este periodo aparecen incensarios
y estatuillas decoradas monocromticas y poli-
cromticas, posiblemente utilizados para repre-
sentar a los dioses.

Ometepes pottery begins to have bigger de-
velopment in the former period, 1500 years
B.C.; during this period the expansion and the
frsts interchanges characteristically of the
monochrome red and black pottery begin, du-
ring this period we see, tripod wooden bowls,
wooden bowls without support and all size pla-
tes. In Ometepe, it can also be found pottery
from the zones period (in zones), 500 years B.C.
in great quantities, it is during this period that
the use of the red cover of painting treatment

ries and utilitarian big pots, in this period of

me period 800 to 1350 years D.C., ceramic got
infuence from the north, the feathered snake
took fame as well as jaguars, model pattern de-
sign and ovoid shapes; they increase the use of
funeral urns and the application is with white
or beige base, with decorations in red, black
and orange. Already in the last period, call late
Polychrome, the gods like Quetzalcoatl, Tlatoc,
Quateot, are represented in the pottery, among
others, in this period, the use of the gray pearl,
the yellow and with more intonation the oran-
ge one increase; during this period incensories
and monochrome and polychrome decorated

COMMUNITY TRANSPORT IN THE ISLAND
Ometepe has a collective internal transport that

pa, Altagracia, Balge, Mrida and San Ramn,

mente aceptado en toda la isla en sus bajas

condition is a little hot during the day time (up
to 32oC), for that reason, it is advisable to be

establecidas, 2 de ellas estn en Moyogalpa y
una de ellas en Altagracia, todos ellas dispensan
gasolina y diesel, as como otros insumos como
aceites y lubricantes.
SISTEMA DE SALUD
El ministerio de Salud opera dos centros de sa-
lud en Moyogalpa y Altagracia que brindan los
servicios bsicos pre-hospitalarios, los casos
ms delicados deben ser atendidos en la ciudad
de Rivas o Managua.
Moyogalpa signifca en lengua Mexicana, antiguo
Nahuatlaca, Pueblo de los Mosquitos o Zancu-
dos, de las voces Moyotl, que signifca Mos-
quitos o Zancudos y Calla o calli que indica

Moyogalpa posee una precipitacin anual que
vara entre los 1,400 mm caracterizndose por

(Sabana tropical), la caracterstica del perodo
lluvioso de la Isla de Ometepe presenta el mis-

FIESTAS PATRONALES DE MOYOGALPA
Baile de las Inditas
Las principales festividades religiosas de la ciu-
dad de Moyogalpa son las festas patronales en
honor a la Virgen de Santa Ana que se celebran
anualmente entre el 23 y el 27 de Julio.
Durante las festividades se realizan mltiples
actividades como monta de toros, desfles hpi-
cos y El Baile de la Inditas, este ltimo, rene
a la mayora de las mujeres y nias del pue-
blo que desflan en coloridos trajes de gipil,
traje tpico nicaragense, decorados con bellos
adornos de fores naturales, collares y sombre-
ros. Aunque el recorrido es de pocas cuadras, el
desfle puede tardar varias horas hasta llegar a
la Parroquia de Santa Ana.

La Isla de Ometepe est interconectada con el
pas por medio del sistema telefnico nacional
de manera moderna y efciente. Las seales de
las compaas de celulares como CLARO y MO-
VISTAR, cubren gran parte de la isla, pero aun
no est 100% cubierta.
Si usted desea comunicarse va Internet, la isla
cuenta con tres Internet cafs con conexin de
banda ancha va satlite, ubicados en Moyogal-
pa, Altagracia y en algunos hoteles en la Playa
Santo Domingo, quienes prestan este servicio a
sus huspedes sin costo adicional.
Cyber Caf Arcia, es uno de los ms populares

MOYOGALPAS PATRON FEASTS
(Dance of the Inditas)
The main religious festivities of the city of Mo-
yogalpa are the patron feasts in honor to Santa
Anas Virgin that take place every year between
the 23rd and the 27th of July.
During the feasts multiple activities like bull-
riding, horsy parades and the Baile de las Indi-
tas are carried out; this last one, gathers most
of the women and girls of the town, who walk
along the streets dressed in colorful suits known
as gipil, a typical Nicaraguan dress, deco-
rated with beautiful natural fowers, necklaces
and hats.
Although the journey is of few blocks, the para-
de can take several hours until arriving to Santa
Anas Church.

PUNTA DE JESS MARA
Punta de Jess Mara, es una pennsula locali-
zada a 4 km al sur de Moyogalpa, formada por
la acumulacin de cenizas y polvo provenien-
tes del volcn Concepcin. Tambin es llamada
Punta de la Paloma.

Este es uno de los puntos ms visitados por tu-
ristas debido a la maravillosa vista panormica
de los volcanes. Se puede caminar sobre el ban-
co de arena y ceniza dentro del lago, que en ve-
rano puede llegar a medir hasta 2km, dando la
sensacin de caminar sobre el agua. Con suerte
usted podr observar miles de aves, entre las
que se destacan los cormoranes, patos, garzas y
gaviotas que descansan o secan sus alas sobre el
banco de arena que conforma la pennsula.

tribes, this visit will be the introduction to the
fascinating history of Ometepe Island. It is lo-
cated from Moyogalpas port 300 meters to the
east, open to the public from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00
p.m. This room exhibits about 300 pieces and
constitutes one of the most complete and im-
pressive private collections in Nicaragua, among
those that stand out there are funeral urns, tri-
pods, grinding stones, statuettes, and the fa-
mous vessel of the bat, unique in the island.
In their interior, the pieces have been separated
according to their period and they have a small
interpretation that will allow you to recognize
and to learn on the evolution of the ceramic in
Ometepe.
ASSOCIATION OF COMMUNITY RURAL TOURISM

This association, member of the net of tourism
community of Nicaragua, agglutinates 14 rural
families of the Palomas community, to offer the
visitor the lodging services and feeding in their
own houses, where you will be able to share a
living experience with a rural family, while en-
joying of beautiful beaches, you will be able to
learn Spanish and get familiarized with the ac-
tivities characteristic of the properties of the
peasants. This is an ideal option for a group of

PUNTA DE JESS MARA
Punta de Jesus Mara is a peninsula located 4
km to the south of Moyogalpa, formed by the
accumulation of ashy and powder coming from
the Concepcin volcano. It is also called Punta
de la Paloma .
This is one of the most visited points by tourists
due to the wonderful panoramic view of the
volcanoes. You can walk on the sand-bank and
ash inside the lake that can end up measuring
up to 2km in summer, giving the sensation of
walking on the water. With luck you will be able
to observe thousands of birds, among those that
stand out the cormorants, ducks, heron and gu-
lls that rest or dry their wings on the sand-bank
that conforms the peninsula.

La excursin al volcn concepcin puede hacer-
se con dos variantes: el ascenso hasta el foral y
el ascenso hasta el crter. La hora recomendada
de salida es a las 6:00 a.m., en vehculo hasta
la comunidad de la Concepcin donde se inicia
el ascenso 30 minutos despus de haber llegado
y haber recibido las recomendaciones generales
del gua. La primera etapa es una zona de amor-
tiguamiento de ascenso a la reserva natural.
Son pequeas fncas y parcelas donde los cam-
pesinos tienen diferentes tipos de plantaciones
como banano y caf, y en la poca de invierno
hay siembras de granos bsicos como frijoles,
zorgo y maz. La reserva natural comienza of-
cialmente a partir de los 600 msnm, donde po-
dr observar fauna y fora caractersticas del
bosque tropical seco, es la zona ms inclinada
hasta el foral, en este trayecto usted podr
observar abundates familias de monos congos
y monos cara blanca caractersticos de esta
zona.
El sendero en este trayecto es de alta difcultad
y se necesitan buenas condiciones fsicas y equi-
po para caminar como botas y palos de caminar
(hiking boots y walking sticks) hasta el Floral,
un mirador natural a 1000 mtrs de altura, hasta
este punto se dice que se ha completado la ex-
cursin al foral, sin embargo si desea continuar
hasta el crter le tomar unas tres horas adicio-
nales en ascenso y descenso.
Esta etapa cuenta con las mejores panormi-
cas, marca el fn de la vegetacin e inicia la ver-
dadera aventura. El terreno se vuelve ms incli-
nado y difcil, con piedras volcnicas sueltas;
sin embargo el esfuerzo de coronar uno de los
volcanes ms altos de Nicaragua vale la pena.

The path in this itinerary is of high diffculty and
good physical conditions and equipment to walk
hiking boots and walking sticks, are needed
until the Floral, a natural bay-window to 1000
mtrs of height, it is said that the trip has been
completed to the foral when reaching to this
point, however if you want to continue up to
the crater, it will take you some three additio-
nal hours in ascending and descending.
This stage has the best scenes, it marks the end
of the vegetation and it is where the true ad-
venture begins. The ground becomes more in-
clined and diffcult, with loose volcanic stones;
however, the effort of crowning one of the hig-
hest volcanoes in Nicaragua is worthwhile.

FIESTAS PATRONALES DE ALTAGRACIA
Danza del Zompopo
Al cambiar los franciscanos a Quiateot (dios de
las cosechas) impusieron a San Diego de Alcal
y el baile ritual a ste dios tom el nombre de
Baile del Zompopo, el cual se baila con una
rama en la mano al son de tambores y redoblan-
tes que ellos llamaban tunkules y tepnastles.
Estos rituales los realizaban en la ltima luna
llena de abril y en la primera de mayo.
Las festas de San Diego de Alcal se celebran
entre el 11 de Octubre y el 1ero de Noviem-
bre, donde se realizan montaderas de toros y
reparticin de comidas y bebidas tpicas como,
chicha de maz, atol y tibio.
Otras festas importantes en el municipio son:
En Tagizapa: Santiago del 16 al 26 de Julio.
En Urbaite: San Po del 11 al 15 Mayo.
En Balge: Corazn de Jess en Diciembre.
Fiestas de San Diego de Alcal
PEA LA CHIRCA
Ubicada entre San Marcos y Altagracia, es uno de
los mejores lugares para la interpretacin de los
tipos de lava volcnica del volcn Concepcin,
es un recorrido corto de entre 10 y 30 minutos
donde apreciar una excelente panormica del
volcn Concepcin, y podr observar diferentes
especies de aves y monos.
El APANTE
Es un humedal ubicado 1 kilmetro al norte de
Moyogalpa. La caminata desde Moyogalpa hasta
el Apante toma alrededor de 2 horas, en terre-
no plano en zona urbana y senderos suaves, en
una trayectoria circular.
El apante es un humedal de bosque tropical
seco, reservorio de aves migratorias y residen-
tes y de tortugas. En el recorrido usted podr
aprender sobre la siembra de variedades de pl-
tanos durante todo el ao, y en la poca de in-
vierno sobre la siembra de frjol, maz y arroz.
MUNICIPIO DE ALTAGRACIA
Altagracia es uno de los dos municipios que con-
forman la Isla de Ometepe, est ubicado en la
fsiografa de la cordillera de los Maribios, con-
tiene dos grandes volcanes: El Concepcin y El
Maderas. El Volcn Concepcin punto ms alto,
tiene una topografa irregular.
Alcanza pendientes mayores al 50% en cotas su-
periores a 200 m y cotas inferiores a este nme-
ro, las pendientes se sitan entre el 0% y 15%.
En el Istmo de Istin los terrenos son de caracte-
rsticas planas con pendientes del 0% al 4%.
En el Madera el relieve es escarpado y monta-
oso en cotas superiores a los 200 m. con pen-
dientes desde 15% hasta 75% a medida que se
asciende.
El clima de Altagracia es semihmedo y la dis-
tribucin anual de la precipitacin (de Mayo a
Octubre) est entre los 1,400 mm y 1,600 mm.
La temperatura media anual oscila entre los 27
y 27.5 Grados Celsius.
Las temperaturas ms altas se registran de Mar-
zo a Mayo, siendo las ms bajas de Noviembre
a Enero. La extensin territorial es de 211.21
Km2, con una poblacin estimada de 20,579
PEA LA CHIRCA
Located between San Marcos and Altagracia, it
is one of the best places for the interpretation

El APANTE

MUNICIPALITY OF ALTAGRACIA
Altagracia is one of the two municipalities that
conforms the Island of Ometepe, it is located
in the physiography of the mountain range of
the Maribios, and it has two big volcanoes: The
Concepcin and The Maderas.
The highest point, the Concepcin Volcano, has
an irregular topography. It reaches bigger slopes
to 50% in contour-lines superior than the 200
msnm and contour-lines inferior to this number,
the slopes are located between 0% and 15%.
In the Istin Isthmus the lands are of fat charac-
teristics with slopes that go from 0% to 4%. In the
Maderas the relief is escarped and mountainous
in contour-lines higher than the 200 msnm. with
slopes from 15% up to 75% as it is ascended.
Altagracias climate is semi-humid and the an-
nual distribution of the precipitation (from May
to October) is between the 1,400 mm and 1,600
mm. The annual half temperature is between
the 27 and 27.5 Celsius degrees.

ch to May, being the lowest from November to
January. The territorial extension is of 211.21

ALTRAGRACIAS PATRON FEASTS
Danza del Zompopo
(Dance of el Zompopo)
When the Franciscans changed to Quiateot (god
of the crops), they imposed to San Diego de Al-
cal and the ritual dance to this god took the
name of Danza del Zompopo, which is danced
with a branch in the hand to the drums and roll
sound they called tunkules and tepnastles. They
carried out these rituals in the last full moon of
April and in the frst of May.
San Diego de Alcals feast take place between
October 11th and November 1st, when bull-ri-
ding, distribution of foods and typical drinks
such as, chicha, which is made of corn, atol and
tibio are carried out.
Other important feasts in the municipality are:
In Tagizapa: Santiago, 16th - 26th of July.
In Urbaite: San Pio, 11th - the 15 of May.
In Balge: Corazon de Jesus, in December.

Keepp in mind that the Municipality of Altagra-
cia is the most extensive in the island, and con-
sequently most of the tourist attractions of the
island are spread out in the municipality, there-
fore, we recommend you to lodge at different
places of the municipality.
For a better understanding, we have divided
the municipality into the following regions:
Charco Verde, Urban area, Playa Santo Domin-
go, Balge, Mrida and San Ramn.
In the Altagracias urban area there are diffe-
rent options of lodging with basic facilities, very
comfortable and hygienic.
The Posada Cabrera is in front of the north side
of the central park and a few blocks away is
located Casa Hospedaje Ortz. Another option
in the urban area is the Hotel Central and Hotel

Playa Santo Domingo area is one of the most

RESERVA ECOLGICA CHARCO VERDE

extensin de veinte hectreas, bordeada por
un kilmetro de playas privadas; que compren-
den La Playa Charco Verde, Playa El Bancn y
La Laguna de Charco Verde, esta ltima, nom-
brada por nuestros antepasados nhuatl como
Xistleteot que signifca lugar donde orinan los
dioses.
Alrededor de ella nuestros aborgenes practica-
ban sus rituales como sacrifcios, reencarnacio-
nes o pedimentos a los dioses, entre otros.
La Laguna de Charco verde es un crter parsito
extinto del volcn Concepcin y su color verde
esmeralda se debe a las abundantes algas que le
dan su color caracterstico.

El Museo Numismtico de Ometepe, se encuen-
tra localizado en la hacienda El refugio a 11Km
de Moyogalpa y es uno de esos atractivos que
usted no querr perderse. Es producto de la
perseverancia, tesn y la pasin de Sr. Moiss
Ghitis; quin empez en el mundo de la numis-
mtica a la edad de 6 aos, y hoy, casi cuarenta
aos despus, exhibe la coleccin ms completa
de Nicaragua. El museo est abierto al pblico
todos los das de la semana desde las 8:00 a.m.

Su coleccin cuenta con ms de 370 billetes y

Ometepes Numismatic Museum is located insi-
de Hacienda El Refugio, at 11Km from Moyogal-
pa and it is one of those attractions that you
wont want to lose. It is a product of the perse-
verance, frmness and the passion of Mr. Moiss
Ghitis; who began in the world of the numisma-
tist when he was 6 year-old, and today, almost
forty years later; it exhibits the most complete
collection in Nicaragua. The museum is open
to the public every day of the week from 8:00
oclock a.m. up to 5:30 oclock p.m.
Its collection counts with more than 370 bills
and 365 coins, all of them classifed by dates
and shift rulers that coined or printed them. To
go through its different rooms is to navigate to
the former times of Nicaragua and Central Ame-
rica, traveling through a bill or a coin until going
back before Columbus times when cocoa was
the currency of the trade, without getting lost
of course, of those details that make of each
bill or coin a unique piece of its treasure.
Although it opened its doors few months ago,
it already counts with an impressive registering
book of visits, and it is very probable that The

SANTA MARTHAS BEACH
This bay of black sands in horseshoe shape is lo-
cated in the region of San Jos del Sur, at 12Km
of Moyogalpa. While visiting the beach, you can

ECOLOGICAL RESERVE OF CHARCO VERDE
In the community of San Jos del Sur, 13 Km.
from Moyogalpa, the protected area or natu-
ral park of Charco Verde is located, it has an
extension of twenty hectares, surrounding a
kilometer of private beaches; that includes
Playa Charco Verde, Playa El Bancn and Charco
Verdes Lagoon, this last one, named by our pre-
vious nhuatl like Xistleteot that means place
where the gods urinate.
Around it our aboriginals used to practice their
rituals as sacrifces, reincarnations or requests
to the gods, among others.
Charco Verdes Lagoon is an extinct parasite
crater of the Concepcin volcano and its green
emerald color is due to the abundant algae that
give it its characteristic color.
The dry tropical forest that surrounds the re-
serve is an important refuge of abundant local
and migratory aquatic birds among those that

LA LEYENDA DE CHICO LARGO
La reserva ecolgica Charco Verde, adems de
ser un santuario de vida silvestre es muy famosa
por la leyenda local de Chico Largo. Cuenta la
leyenda, que en los aos 1,800 un personaje de
la comunidad de San Jos del Sur, Francisco Ro-
drguez, conocido como Chico Largo retoma las
costumbres de nuestros aborgenes tales como
la ciencia oculta, practicando con esta la bru-
jera, curandera y reencarnacin de personas
convirtindose en animal.
Chico Largo practicaba su hechicera en los al-
rededores de la laguna, invocando a dioses o
demonios para convertirse en venado y de esta
manera fcilmente poda trasladarse a otros
puntos y tomar alimentos sin costo alguno.
En una de estas andanzas convertido en venado
, sin prever, se dirigi a las reas aledaas cono-
cidas como el mirador del diablo, donde caza-
dores le hirieron gravemente y le dieron perse-
cucin orientados por los rastros de sangre por
el sendero del mirador del diablo hasta la lagu-
na donde Chico Largo haca sus hechiceras.
Al amanecer Chico Largo estaba en su rancho
herido de bala mortalmente, esto no le permiti
regresar a su personalidad original. Su mam Bu-
cha experta bruja y curandera no pudo con sus
oraciones y brebajes resolver el caso, muriendo
as Chico Largo mitad humano mitad venado.
Mam Bucha mantiene lo ocurrido en secreto y
tomando en sus brazos el cuerpo sin vida de su
hijo lo sepulta personalmente a la orilla de la
laguna en el lugar de sus rituales. Al pasar el
tiempo los vecinos descubren lo ocurrido rela-
cionando lo contado por los cazadores y la au-
sencia de Chico Largo.
La mam Bucha se ve obligada a contar la ver-
dad y decide con los vecinos extraer el cuerpo
de la laguna y realizarle cristiana sepultura,
llevndose entonces gran sorpresa que en ese
lugar solo encontraron sabanas y alguna ropa de
vestir manchada con sangre.
Hoy en da los habitantes de la comunidad de
San Jos del Sur afrman que el espritu de Chico
Largo es el guardin y protector de este mgico
lugar Charco Verde.

Esta Reserva Ecolgica tambin comprende una
importante variedad de plantas y fores, entre
estas tenemos: guanacaste, cedro, pochote
(Bombacopsis quinata), chaperno (Lonchocar-
pus salvadorensis), gusimo (Guazuma ulmifo-
lia), espinos, helequemes (Eritrina Poeppigia-
na), manglares, for de zardinillo (Tecoma stans)
y otras.

Contiguo a la reserva usted puede alojarse en
Charco Verde Inn, un complejo turstico que in-
cluye un hotel con cabaas confortables fren-
te a la playa y restaurante, donde usted podr
gozar de distintas actividades como kayaking,

in the years 1,800 a character of the community
of San Jos del Sur, Francisco Rodrguez, better
known as Chico Largo recaptures the customs
of our aboriginal ones such as occult science,
practicing with this the witchcraft, quackery
and peoples reincarnation becoming animal.
Chico Largo used to practice his sorcery in the
surroundings of the lagoon, invoking gods or
demons to become deer and in this way easi-
ly could move to other points and take food
without any cost.
In one of these adventures, transformed into
deer, without foreseeing, he went to the well-
known neighboring areas as the Mirador del Dia-
blo, where hunters hurt him gravely and they
gave him persecution guided by the rakes of
blood by the path of the Mirador del Diablo to
the lagoon where Chico Largo used to practice
his sorceries.
At dawn Chico Largo was in his ranch deadly
wounded of bullet, this didnt allow him to re-
turn to his original personality. His mom Bucha
expert witch and quack doctor was not able to
solve the case with her prays and beverages,
dying Chico Largo in this way, half a human half
a deer.
Mom Bucha maintains what happened secretly
and taking in her arms the dead body of her son,
buries him on the lagoon in the place of its ri-
tuals on her own. When passing the time, the
neighbors discover what happened by the hun-
ters saying and Chico Largos absence.
Mom Bucha was forced to tell the truth and she
decides with the neighbors to bring the body off
the lagoon and to give him Christian sepulcher,
being taken by great surprise that they only
found in that lonely place, sheets and some
dressing clothes spotted with blood.
Nowadays the inhabitants of the community of
San Jos del Sur affrm that Chico Largos spirit
is the guard and protector of this magic place
Charco Verde.

En la sala de etnologa se exponen las tradicio-
nes y folklore de Ometepe, trajes tpicos de
cada municipio, murales alusivos a la leyenda
de Chico Largo y los instrumentos musicales uti-
lizados por los indgenas.
En la sala de historia se ejemplifcan los dife-
rentes perodos de ocupacin prehispnica de
la isla, con muestras originales producidas por
los aborgenes en los que se destacan urnas fu-
nerarias, incensarios, cermica policromtica,
cermica negra y petroglifos.
En el patio y el corredor del museo se exhiben
retratos de personajes ilustres que han habitado
la isla, urnas funerarias de diferentes tamaos,
y una estatua (800DC) que representa a la diosa
de la fertilidad, Catlinge.
El museo se encuentra abierto al pblico todos
los das de 9:00 a.m. a 5:00 p.m., el valor de
admisin es de aproximadamente USD1.00. Si

PUNTA TAGIZAPA
La Playa o Punta Tagizapa se encuentra locali-
zada a 1.3Km al este del pueblo de Altagracia,
en lengua nhuatl signifca Agua y Tierra de
Sapotes Colorados, rodea una hermosa ense-
nada de aguas tranquilas y serenas con hermo-
sos atardeceres.
Frente a la playa se encuentra el Hotel y Res-
taurante Taqizapa, que ofrece habitaciones
sencillas, dobles, familiares, servicio de restau-
rante y paseos en botes por la isla. La punta
Taqizapa es famosa entre los pescadores por su
excelente pesca en la que destaca el Guapote y
el Roncador.
MUSEO ARQUEOLGICO DE OMETEPE
El Museo de Arqueologa de Ometepe se encuen-
tra ubicado del parque municipal de Altagra-
cia 50 metros al Oeste. Este museo se fund
en 1994, gracias al inters de la asociacin
promotora del museo y cultura de Ometepe y
la Fundacin entre volcanes, apoyados por el
DANIDA y el Instituto nicaragense de cultura.
Este cuenta con 4 salas de exposicin: sala del
medio ambiente, sala de etnologa y la sala de
historia.
En la sala del medio ambiente se destaca la
maqueta escalada de la isla, con sus tipos de

OMETEPES ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM
Ometepe Archaeological Museum is located
from the municipal park of Altagracia, 50 mts
to the West. This museum was founded in 1994,
thanks to the interest of the promoter associa-
tion of Ometepes museum and culture and the
Foundation Entre Volcanes supported by DANI-
DA and the Nicaraguan Institute of culture. This
has 4 exhibition rooms: the environment room,
ethnology room, the history room and the patio
and corridor of the museum.
In the environment room, it stands out the
scale model of the island, with its types of lava,
characteristic of the volcanoes and the geologic
formations that gave origin to the island.
In the ethnology room the traditions and folklore
of Ometepe are exposed, typical suits of each mu-
nicipality, allusive murals to Chico Largos legend
and the musical instruments used by the natives.
In the history room the different periods of pre-
Hispanic occupation of the island are exempli-
fed, with originals samples taken place by the
aboriginals in those that stand out funeral urns,
incense vessels, polychrome ceramic, black ce-
ramic and petroglyphs.
In the patio and the corridor of the museum,
portraits of illustrious characters that have in-
habited the island are exhibited, funeral urns of
different sizes, and a statue (800DC) that repre-
sents the goddess of the fertility, Catlinge.
The museum is open to the public every day
from 9:00 a.m. at 5:00 p.m.; the admission fare

bosque de galera donde habita una manada de
monos congos.

La Finca Santo Domingo fue fundada a mediados

Dada la creciente demanda de turistas en la
dcada de los 90s, varias de las propiedades
ubicadas en la costa de Playa Santo Domingo
fueron convertidas en hoteles y restaurantes,
que enfocaban su oferta en estos bellos 4 km
de playa de arena blanca volcnica y de aguas
poco profundas ideales para disfrutar de un
bao seguro, que actualmente representan uno
de los principales focos de atraccin de la Isla

EL OJO DE AGUA
El Ojo de Agua, as it is popularly known, is a
natural spring of crystalline waters that ema-
nates from Tilge, located at the intersection of
the bridge El Buen Suceso 100 mts to the Lake,
being this the main slope of the Buen Suceso
river.
In the property, some rustic facilities as pools,
ranches and paths have been built. The path
goes through the perimeter of the property,
with some small elevations that can be com-
pleted by walking for 1 hour through a gallery
forest where a herd of howler monkeys lives.
Regularly the hotels in Santo Domingos Beach
organize horse-riding until the Ojo de Agua, the
average fare is between USD$8 to USD$10.00
per hour. The admission fare is about USD$1.00

Finca Santo Domingos was founded around the
middle of the XIX century, by a family that emi-

time it adopted the name of Finca Santo Domin-

Este atractivo puede ser visitado nicamente en
invierno en kayak desde Charco Verde o Hacien-
da Mrida, incursionando por la bocana del ro.
El recorrido completo es de entre 4 a 6 horas,
este humedal natural afuente del ro Istin es
un reservorio natural de aves residentes y mi-
gratorias. Tambin se puede visitar por la parte

El volcn Maderas tiene mucho que ofrecer, en
trminos de abundancia natural y arqueolgica.
Sus bosques son potencialmente los ms diversos
de cualquier bosque de su tamao en Nicaragua,
demostrando una transicin del bosque hmedo
al bosque nuboso, y del bosque seco al bosque
enano en sus inclinaciones secas y occidentales.
El crter de la cumbre del volcn, al 1,394m,
cubre una laguna de agua dulce poco conocida y
sus faldas ms bajas contienen varias cascadas
hermosas.
Los petroglifos, los artefactos arqueolgicos
alrededor la base del volcn indican que era
un centro importante para las civilizaciones
pre-colombinas de Olmecas-Toltecas y de Nahuatl.
LA FAUNA Y LA FLORA DEL MADERAS
Maderas tiene una biodiversidad excepcional
y sus bosques son un refugio para poblaciones
importantes de la vida silvestre. Existe una alta
densidad de monos congo (Alouatta palliata) y
de monos cara blanca (Cebus capuccinus), que
han declinado dramticamente en el bosque
seco del Pacfco de Nicaragua. Tambin se pue-
den ver el oso hormiguero (Tamandua mexicana)
y el armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus). Hasta la
fecha se han registrado un total de 50 especies
de mamferos, 148 especies de aves, 31 reptiles
y 9 anfbios.
El volcn Maderas es tambin altamente impor-
tante para los aves amenazados que se conocen
han declinado dramticamente en otras par-
tes. Tales especies incluyen la lora nucamarilla
(Amazona auropalliata) en las reas del bosque
seco, y el Pjaro Campana (Procnias tricaruncu-
latus) y Colibr Gorgiprpura (Lampornis calo-
laemus) en el bosque nuboso.
El volcn Maderas tambin es un sitio altamente
importante para las aves migratorias que migran
de los Estados Unidos y Canad hasta Amrica

both natural and archaeological wealth. Its
forests are potentially the most biologically
diverse of any their size in Nicaragua, showing
a transition from moist lowland forest to cloud
forest on the volcanos wetter eastern slopes,
and from dry forest to elfn forest on its drier
western slopes. The volcanos summit crater,
at 1,394m, conceals a little-known freshwater
lagoon and its lower slopes contain a number of
beautiful waterfalls.
Petroglyphs and archaeological artefacts at the base
of the volcano indicate it was an important
centre for Olmecas-Toltecas and Nahualt pre-
colombian civilizations.
THE FAUNA AND FLORA OF MADERAS
Maderas has exceptional biodiversity and
its forests are a haven for important wildlife
populations.There are high densities of easily-
visible mantled howler monkeys (Alouatta palli-
ate) or Mono Congo and white-faced capuchin
monkeys (Cebus capuccinus ) or Mono Cara
Blanca, both of which have declined dramati-
cally in Nicaraguas Pacifc dry forest.
The Mexican an-teater (Tamandua mexicana)
and the Northern naked tail armadillo (Dasypus
novemcinctus) can also be seen. To date a total of
50 mammal species, 148 bird species, 31 rep-
tiles and 9 amphi-bians have been recorded.
Maderas is also highly important for threatened
birds that are known to have declined dramati-
cally else where. Such species include the yel-
low-necked parrot (Amazona auropalliata) or
Lora Nucamarilla in the dry forest areas, and
the Three-wattled Bellbird (Procnias tricaruncula-
tus) or Pjaro Campana and Purplethroa-ted
mountain gem hummingbird (Lampornis calolaemus)
or Colibr Gorgiprpura that breed in the
high-altitude cloud forest.

La isla de Ometepe es nica. Con 276 km

, es
una de las islas de agua dulce ms grandes del
mundo, situado en el lago Nicaragua, el segundo
cuerpo ms grande de agua dulce en Amrica
latina. Ometepe est formado por dos volcanes
cnicos conectados por humedales prstinos.
La gama de altitudes en la isla (hasta 1,610m),
combinada por su posicin entre la costa Pacfca
seca y la costa caribe hmeda de Nicaragua, hacen
una gama dramtica de climas, por esta razn
los principales tipos de hbitat en Nicaragua
estn presentes en la isla.
El volcn situado ms al sur, Volcn Maderas,
est inactivo y se encuentra revestido de bos-
que. En 1983, Maderas fue defnido como una
Reserva Natural e incorporado al sistema na-
cional de reas protegidas de Nicaragua. No
obstante fue en el 2006, cuando una iniciativa
de colaboracin, dirigida por FFI, para mejorar la
proteccin y el manejo de la reserva, emplea-
ron a los primeros guardaparques del parque en
la historia de la isla para patrullar y para prote-
ger los recursos naturales del Ma deras.
En la actualidad existe una propuesta para
ampliar los lmites de la Reserva y aumentar su
grado de proteccin hasta un Parque Nacional,
lo cual est siendo valorado por las autoridades
Nicaragenses y est en proceso de ser aprobado.

The island of Ometepe is unique. At 276 km
2
it
is one of the worlds largest freshwater islands,
situated in Lake Nicaragua, the second largest
body of freshwater in Latin America. Ometepe
is formed by two conical volcanoes connected
by a pristine wetland. The range of altitudes
on the island (up to 1,610m), combined with its
position between Nicaraguas dry tropical Pacifc
and wet tropical Caribean coasts, subject it to a
dramatic range of climates. For this reason all
the major habitat types found in Nicaragua are
present on the island.
The southern-most volcano, Volcn Maderas, is
dormant and remains clad in forest. In 1983,
Maderas was designated a Natural Reserve and
incorporated within Nicaraguas national system
of protected areas. However it wasnt until
2006, when a collaborative initiative, led by FFI,
to improve the protection and management of
the Reserve, that the frst Park Rangers in the
history of the island were employed to patrol
and protect Maderas natural resources.
The conservation of the area is anticipated to
further improve; proposals to extend the limits
of the Reserve and increase its designation to
that of a National Park have been presented to
the Nicaraguan authorities and are in the process
of being approved.

Desde este sendero se puede tener vistas
espectaculares del volcn Concepcin (1,610m)
y del lago Cocibolca adems de internarse den-
tro de los bosques hmedos, nuboso y enano. El
esfuerzo de subir a la cumbre vale la pena porque
culmina en la laguna del crter!
Debido al grado de difcultad de la subida,
cualquier viaje a la cumbre del volcn Maderas
debe estar acompaado de manera obligatoria
por una gua local y los turistas deben estar bien
equipados (con agua, botas, ropa adicional para
las temperaturas ms frescas en la cumbre,
etc).
Todos los visitantes a la reserva natural Volcn
de Maderas deben anotarse en el registro de vi-
sitantes de la Estacin del Guardaparques situada en
Finca Magdalena. Actualmente la isla cuenta con
Guas tursticos califcados, que han recibido entrena-
miento (acreditado por el Instituto Nicaragense
del Turismo) en historia natural de Ometepe.
Hay varios otros senderos de excursin que
existen en la isla. Una de las ms populares
es hermosa cascada de San Ramn (100m de
altura) que se puede acceder desde la estacin
biolgica de San Ramn y tiene una distancia
aproximada de 3 kilmetros. Desde Finca Mag-
dalena hay tambin senderos que le llevan a los
petroglifos y a los sitios arqueolgicos que estn
alrededor del volcn, as como un sendero para
visitar plantaciones orgnicas del caf y rboles
frutales de la Finca.
Una iniciativa de la comunidad indgena de la
isla ha llevado a la construccin de un nuevo
sendero de naturaleza (1km) situado en el
bosque seco de Pea Inculta, enfrente de la pla-
ya Santo Domingo. Este sendero, relativamente
fcil, se puede recorrer desde la caseta de in-
formacin turstica de la comunidad en Santo
Domingo, el sendero incluye una visita a una es-
tacin de monitoreo de aves migratorios de FFI
(durante la temporada de investigacin), donde
los visitantes pueden observar la investigacin
cientfca en accin; las fechas exactas de mo-
nitoreos estn disponible en los hoteles.

Due to the diffculty of the climb, any trip to the
summit of Maderas Volcano should be accompa-
nied by a local guide and hikers should be well
equipped (with water, boots, extra clothing for
the cooler temperatures at the summit, etc).

All visitors to Maderas Volcano Natural Reserve
should register in the visitor log at the newly
constructed Ranger Station located at Finca
Magdalena. Qualifed tourist guides, who have
received training (accredited by the Nicaraguan
Tourism Institute) in Ometepes natural and
social history and species identifcation, are
available on the island.
A number of other hiking trails exist on the
island. San Ramn Waterfall can be found at the
San Ramn biological station; 3 km trail witch
take a 3 or 4 hours for the ascent and descent.
From Finca Magdalena there are also trails that
take you to the petroglyphs and archaeological
sites that ring the volcano, as well as a trail to
visit the Fincas organic coffee and fruit tree
plantations. An initiative of the islands indi-
genous community has led to the construction
of a new nature trail (1km) located in the dry
forest Roca Inculta, opposite Santo Domingo
beach.
This relatively easy trail can be accessed from
the communitys tourist information hut in Santo
Domingo and incorporates a visit to one of FFIs
bird monitoring stations (during the monitoring
season), where visitors can observe scientifc
research in action.

Un esfuerzo de colaboracin entre las comunidades
locales, los hoteles junto con organizaciones no
gubernamentales nacionales e internacionales y
las autoridades Nicaragenses, estn trabajando
en la conservacin de los recursos naturales de la
isla, mejorando el acceso y las instalaciones de
visitantes.
Tres senderos actualmente conducen a la
laguna del crter, el Porvenir, Mrida y Magdalena
respectivamente. Desafortunadamente, la fal-
ta de mantenimiento a travs de los aos, han
llevado a estos senderos a sufrir de problemas
de erosin signifcativa, especialmente en las
secciones ms escarpadas. El sendero que FFI
estar mejorando es el de Finca Magdalena, que
tiene una longitud de 4.5 kilmetros y que toma
en total de 6-7 horas la ida y regreso.

quinatum). Adems hay varias plantas nicas,
incluyendo un rbol endmico (Ardisia ometepensis) un
tipo de uvilla encontrado solamente dentro del bosque
nuboso del Maderas arriba de los 500m de al-
titud.

United States and Canada to Central and South
America. An offcial bird list for Ometepe is
being compiled, to provide basic information on
species status, abundance and distribution and
aid bird-watching expeditions. This check-list is
distributed by Guide Union of Ometepe (UGO) in
different hotel in the island.
Within Maderas dry, montane, elfn, humid and
cloud forests, 520 vascular plant species have
been recorded. However this number is bound
to increase as further surveys are conducted.
Important species include a number of threa-
tened trees, such as the Cedar (Cedrela odorata)
or Cedro Real and the Pochote (Bombacopsis
quinata) or Pochote, as well as various unique
plants, including an endemic tree (Ardisia omete-
pensis) a type of Marlberry found only within
Maderas cloud forests above 500m altitude.
A collaborative effort between local communi-
ties, hotels and other small businesses on the is-
land, alongside national and international non-
governmental organizations and the Nicaraguan
authorities, is ensuring improved conservation
of the islands natural resources whilst impro-
ving access and facilities for visitors.

Three trails currently lead up to the crater
lagoon, from Porvenir, Mrida and Magdalena
respectively. Unfortunately, through a lack of
maintenance over the years, these paths are
suffering from signifcant erosion, especially
in some of the steeper sections. However the
most popular route from Finca Magdalena, a 4.5
kilometer trail which takes at total of 6-7 hours
for the ascent and descent, will be im

HACIENDA MRIDA
Hacienda Mrida fue una de las fncas ms im-
portantes de la Familia Somoza, quienes com-
praron la propiedad al Sr. Gastn Lacayo en
1930. El rea de la fnca se estimaba en 900
hectreas, de las cuales 600 estaban cultivadas
con siembra de caf y el resto eran reservas de
bosque. Los antiguos dueos se dedicaban a la
siembre de caa de azcar, por lo que todava
se pueden observar los restos de los utensilios
que se utilizaban para el proceso de la coccin.
En 1945, se renov el edifcio y se trajo una
nueva caldera que cambi todo el proceso del
caf.
Las hectreas no cultivadas eran rentadas a
los a los campesinos, pagando a la hacienda un
5% de la produccin obtenida. En esta regin
la familia Somoza criaba unas 7000 cabezas de
ganado que se movan por todas las fncas y pro-
piedades de los Somoza.
Todava se pueden observar los patios de seca-
dos del caf y los rieles del tren en el que se
trasladaba la produccin de caf de diferentes
acopios de caf dentro de la fnca hasta el mue-
lle donde eran embarcados para su comercia-
lizacin. La Familia Somoza visitaba la propie-
dad unas 3 veces al ao, quienes usualmente se
trasladaban en la maquina de vapor Somoza y el
Cinco estrellas.
En 1979, la fnca fue confscada por el gobierno
sandinista quienes organizaron una cooperativa
estatal. Todo el ganado y la infraestructura fue-
ron vendidos y la hacienda sufri un abandono
y deterioro gradual hasta que en 1985, todos
los edifcios fueron abandonados. En 1990 du-
rante el gobierno de la Sra. Violeta Chamorro,
la primer mujer presidente en Amrica Latina,
don lo que quedaba de Hacienda Mrida al ins-
tituto nicaragense de turismo, quienes en el
2002 rentaron la propiedad al Sr. lvaro Molina,
quien convirti la fnca en un pequeo hotel,
aprovechando la vieja estructura para construir
11 habitaciones y dormitorios. El antiguo muelle
y la casa hacienda fueron restaurados y reciben
turistas de todas partes del mundo.

HACIENDA MRIDA
This was one of the most important farms of the
Somoza family sold it to General Somoza Garca
who bought the property to Mr. Gaston Lacayo
in 1930. The area was 900 hectares, of which
600 were for the cultivation of coffee and 300
were forest and shrub land. The previous owners
were dedicated to the cultivation of sugar cane,
cacao and fruit trees. They even conserved the
giant cooking utensils for sugar cane processing,
chimneys. In 1945, they renovated the building
and brought a steamer which changed the who-
le system of processing coffee and milling rice.
The land that was not cultivated for coffee was
rented to the farmhands. These sharecroppers,
could grow what they pleased on these sections
of land, paying the Hacienda 5% of their produc-
tion takings in return.In this region there were
7000 cattle belonging to the Somoza family. This
cattle were regularly moved among farms and
distributed in the various Somoza states, pri-
marily on the mainland. Running through the
hacienda were train tracks on which a small
wagon from the coffee plant ran to the loading
dock on the lake (the now beached wagon can
still be seen, nestled on the property). General
Somoza Garcia would visit the hacienda two to
three times a year for two weeks with his whole
family. He usually used the boats Vapor Somo-
za (Somoza Steam) and the Cinco Estrellas (The
Five Stars).
In 1979 General Somoza was overthrown by
the Sandinistas and the entire Hacienda was
confscated and turned into a government run
cooperative. All the cattle and capital goods
where sold and the Hacienda began a gradual
deterioration and abandonment. By 1985, most
of the buildings were abandoned. In 1990 du-
ring the government of Violeta Chamorro, the
frst female president in Latin America, donated
what was left of the Hacienda Merida to the Ni-
caraguan Institute of Tourism (INTUR). In 2002,
the Institute of Tourism leased the Hacienda to
Alvaro Molina, a Nica from Esteli. The new two
story house began a gradual restoration and re-
modeling and today has 11 rooms with private
bathrooms. Today Hacienda Merida has 18 em-
ployees and receives tourist form all over the

In Ometepe, the route of Greens Properties
is organized by a group of landowners who have
recently begun in their own farms, the promo-
tion of culture conservationist, for the manage-
ment of natural resources such as soil, water
and forests.
This group of landowners have proposed to offer
the tourists who visit Ometepe, a pleasant stay
in their farms, surrounded by nature and its
local traditions, to know and participate very
close to the own work experiences of the family
in the farm, devoted to the cultivation and raising
animals, in a natural environment, without de-
grading or damaging the environment, trans-
forming this additional activity in a source of
additional income for families.
Some of these Greens Properties have been con-
ditioned so that they can offer food or lodge,
with some comfort-where the customer service
is responsible for the family itself, which allows
a highly personalized service. Others are ready
to offer the visitor, a chance to know about the
production process, the raising of animals or
simply contemplate the fora and fauna that be-
long to Ometepe.
MASRENACE
En Ometepe, la ruta de las Fincas Verdes es
organizada por un grupo de fnqueros que recin
ha iniciado en sus propias fncas, la promocin
de la cultura conservacionista, para el mane-
jo de recursos naturales como el suelo, agua y
bosques.

Este grupo de fnqueros se ha propuesto ofrecer al
turista que visita Ometepe, una estancia agra-
dable en sus fncas, rodeado de la naturaleza
y de sus tradiciones locales, para conocer y
participar muy de cerca de las experiencias de
trabajo propias de la familia dedicadas al culti-
vo y crianza de animales, en un medio natural,
sin degradar o deteriorar el medio ambiente,
convirtiendo esta actividad complementaria en
una fuente de ingresos adicionales para las fa-
milias.
Algunas de stas Fincas Verdes han sido acon-
dicionadas de manera tal que puedan ofrecer
alimentacin o alojamiento; con cierta comodi-
dad, donde la atencin al cliente est a cargo
de la propia familia, lo que permite un servi-
cio muy personalizado. Otras estn dispuestas
a ofrecer al visitante, una oportunidad de co-
nocer el proceso de produccin, la crianza de

Finca Samaria es un pequeo paraso frente
a la playa enclavado entre la punta de Je-
ss Maria y Punta Viva, en la comarca de Es-
quipulas. Se dedica a la crianza de ganado,
siembra de maz, frijol y hortalizas. En la fn-
ca usted puede ordear para luego elaborar
su propio queso, o bien recorrer los potreros
para aprender de las diferentes variedades
de pastos como pasto guineo, gamba, estre-
lla y taiwn morado. La fnca cuenta con un
pequeo albergue de seis habitaciones con
capacidad de 10 personas y servicio de ali-
mentacin.

Uno de los mayores atractivos es su tradicin
tabacalera que se remonta a 40 aos. La fn-
ca ha sufrido una serie de transformaciones
desde el cultivo del algodn a inicio de los
aos cincuenta, hasta la siembra de tabaco
para cigarillos; actualmente se cultivan de
1 a 2 hectreas de tabaco havano para la
elaboracin de puros en el departamento de
Estel. En la fnca puede observar todava
los restos de la antigua maquinaria utilizada
para el secado del tabaco. Adems la fnca
tiene una importante crianza de ganado para
acopio de leche, diferentes tipos de cultivos
en los que se destacan el ajonjol, frijoles,
maz y ctricos.
One of the biggest attractiveness is its toba-
cco tradition that goes back to 40 years. The
property has suffered a series of transforma-
tions from the cultivation of cotton to the
beginning of the years ffty, then the sowing
of tobacco to make cigarettes to the pre-
sent time where it is cultivated from 1 to 2

Finca Samaria is a little paradise compared
to the beach nestled between Punta de Jesus
Maria and Punta Viva, in the region of Esqui-
pulas, this farm is dedicated to the raising of
livestock, planting of corn, beans and vege-
tables. In the farm, you can milk to develop
then your own cheese, or go to the pastu-
re ground to learn from the different varie-
ties of pasture grass as guinea, gamba, star
and purple Taiwan. The farm counts with a
small shelter of six rooms with capacity for
10 people and service supply.

Finca Mara Andrea es una de las fncas ms
diversifcadas en la ruta de las fncas verdes
de Ometepe. Su principal actividad es la
siembra de pltano. Si lo desea durante su
visita se le asignar a un campesino que le
explicar con detenimiento las actividades
diarias como la produccin de plantas orna-
mentales o cultivos como el maz, frijol,caf,
hortalizas y legumbres. Toda la produccin
de la fnca es utilizada para autoconsumo de
los hoteles Ometepetl y Casa Istin. Desde la
fnca se organizan excursiones ecotursticas
de medio dia a la fnca Monte Fresco, en la
ladera del Volcn Concepcin, para la obser-
vacin de monos congos en el bosque tropical
seco.

La fnca se caracteriza por la bsqueda de la
sostenibilidad ambiental de su entorno. En su
visita usted podr observar el ordeo arte-
sanal y la produccin de quesos artesanales
para autoconsumo, asi como tambin la pro-
duccin de fertilizantes o abonos naturales a
travs de la degradacin de desechos slidos
orgnicos con las tcnicas de compostaje y
lombricultura. Como parte de un plan para
mejorar la calidad ambiental de la laguna
Charco Verde y fomentar la biodiversidad,
se estn reforestando 12 de las 30 hectreas
de la fnca con diferentes especies forestales
como madero negro, leucaena, cedro y po-
chote.

Este curioso nombre se debe a que segn la
leyenda estas tierras localizadas en la Loma
El Mogote pertenecan a Chico Largo. La fnca
se dedica principalmente a la siembra de pl-
tanos, maz, frijol y ajojol, adems de una
pequea parcela con hortalizas. Desde la Po-
sada de Chico Largo se organizan excursiones
a pie o a caballo hasta el mirador, las que
pueden ser completadas en 3 horas caminan-
do o una hora y media a caballo. En el mi-
rador se organizan lunadas donde turistas
y locales se reunen alrededor de una fogata
para escuchar la leyenda de Chico Largo y es-
cuchar algunas canciones locales.
This curious name is due to the legend about
these lands located in Loma El Mogote that
belonged to Chico Largo. The farm mainly
focuses on the planting of bananas, corn,
beans and sesame, besides a small plot with
vegetables. From the Posada of Chico Largo
excursions on foot or on horses are organized
to the bay-window which can be completed
in 3 hours by walking for an hour and by horse
for half hour. In the bay-window lunadas
are organized where tourists and locals meet
around a campfre to listen to the legend of
Chico Largo and play some local songs.

su faena diaria. Dentro de las actividades que
oferta, est el ordeo artesanal, la produc-
cin de quesos artesanales, arreo de ganado
a los corrales, descorne, herraje, paseo en
carreta y boxeo de gallos. En el boxeo de ga-
llos, los animales no son maltratados ya que
sus espuelas son cubiertas por unos guantes
de caucho. Venga ensille su propio caballo y
convirtase en un vaquero nicaragense du-
rante su estadia en la Isla de Ometepe!

para el autoconsumo del hotel. Sus propie-
tarios mantienen continuas campaas de
sensibilizacin y educacin ambiental para

sobre sosteniblidad y biodiversidad de la re-
serva. La Hacienda recibe permanentemen-
te estudiantes y profesores de universidades
extranjeras en sus diferentes programas de
voluntariado.
Hacienda Merida is a small former coffee
farm located in southwestern of the Natio-
nal Park Maderas Volcano, which has been
restored and converted into a hotel ranch
to meet visitors. Small plots of banana and
vegetables for personal consumption of the
hotel are cultivated. Their owners maintain
sustained campaigns of sensibility and envi-
ronmental education in adults and children
in nearby communities for the sustainability
and biodiversity of the reserve .The Hacienda
continually receive students and professors
from foreign universities in their different
volunteer programs.

Desde la carretera que conecta Moyogalpa
con Altagracia usted podr observar en una
loma la casa y mirador de la fnca La Espe-
ranza, construda para gozar de una panor-
mica de 360 grados de la isla. Podr aprender
sobre el cultivo del pltano y la produccin
de miel artesanal. En la fnca se est desa-
rrollando un plan de reforestacin natural,
en coordinacin con el Ministerio del Ambien-
te y los Recursos Naturales, para el aprove-
chamiento sostenible del bosque. Adems se
organizan cabalgatas de aventuras de dos a
tres horas a travs del bosque tropical seco,
para la observacin de monos congos, monos
carablanca y ardillas, hasta el Cerro La Pelo-
na en las faldas del volcn Concepcin.
From the road that connects Moyogalpa with
Altagracia you can observe on a hill the house
and bay-window of La Esperanza Property,
built to enjoy an overview of 360 degrees of
the island. You can learn about the cultiva-
tion of banana and the artisan production of
honey. In the farm, a plan of natural refor-
estation is being developed in coordination
with Ministry of the Enviroment and the Nat-
ural Resources, for sustainable development
of the forest. Also, adventure ridings of two
to three hours through the dry tropical forest
are organized in order to observe the Congo
monkeys, white-face monkeys and squirrels
until Cerro La Pelona in the slopes of Con-
cepcin volcano.

La Finca Tilge es ms conocida como Finca
El Ojo de Agua, debido a la popularidad del
manantial que fuye a travs de la fnca. Des-
de hace 36 aos se dedica a la produccin
de pltano y ganado. En la fnca se organizan
cabalgatas de una hora en el permetro para
visitar los plantos de maz, sorgo y frijoles.
Tambin se puede recorrer un sendero para
la observacin de monos congos y mono cara
blanca, el cual se puede completar en unos
45 minutos. La fnca cuenta con piscinas rs-
ticas, ranchos y un comedor para disfrutar
del ojo de agua.
Tilge Property is more commonly known as
Ojo de Agua Property, due to the popularity
of spring that fows through the farm. Since
36 years ago, it is dedicated to the produc-
tion of banana and livestock. In the farm
horsebackridings of one hour are organized
in the perimeter of the property to visit the
cultivations of corn, sorghum and beans. You
can also walk along a path in order to observe
the Congo monkeys and white face monkey,
which can be completed in approximately
45 minutes. The property counts with rustic
pools, ranches and a rustic dining-room to
enjoy the eye of water.
