If you have a large item that can be broken down into small enough parts to fit into a 40L bag, please put it in the bag and dispose of it on the appropriate day. If it can be broken down into parts that are burnable and parts that are not, please dispose of the various parts appropriately. The standard size for a 40L bag is 40cm x 25cm x 60cm. Since April 2005, we have had a new system for disposing of large garbage items. You have to pay a fee of 400 yen, 800 yen, or 1200 yen, based on the size and weight of the object, in order to get rid of these items. These items cannot be thrown out at the regular garbage collection location. In order to dispose of large garbage items, you must call the Collection Center to arrange the date and location of disposal, the amount of the disposal fee and the confirmation number. The Collection Center is open from 8:30am to 5:15pm (Mon-Fri, including national holidays that fall on weekdays), and closed on Saturdays, Sundays, and from December 29 to Jan 3. If you want to arrange for a specific date for collection, be sure to call the Collection Center well in advance. It is possible to dispose of large items by bringing them directly to the Clean Center. (If you bring them directly to the Clean Center, you don't need to call the Collection Center.) However, it is necessary to separate the large items from the regular garbage. If you are only disposing of regular garbage, please put it out on the normal collection days rather than bringing it to the center.

To throw out large items:

Call the Collection Center (029-860-2984) between 8:30am and 5:15pm (Mon-Fri) and give them your name, address, telephone number, and the name of the item that you are discarding. You will be told the pick up date and the fees, and you will be given a confirmation number. This can also be done online. (in Japanese). Purchase tickets for the appropriate amount at one of the designated stores (list in Japanese). Put the item out by 8am on the assigned collection date. The garbage will be picked up. (No need to stand outside and wait for it to be picked up.) Take reusable oversized garbage to Tsukuba Recycle Hiroba (029-847-4060), recycle shops, or flea markets. The Tsukuba Recycle Hiroba will pick up items such as furniture, bedding, and bicycles on Tuesdays. (Closed Mondays) If you bring the item directly to the Clean Center, you will be charged 130 yen per 10 kg.
