HOW DO I MAINTAIN MY CAR
PROPERLY?
Well most cars come with a manual; you
know that little book in the glove box that
hardly anyone bothers to read. It contains
valuable information on the operation and
maintenance of your vehicle.
The manufacturer has a detailed and com-
prehensive maintenance schedule for your
car, telling you what to change at different
mileage intervals during the life of your car.
This is called preventive maintenance; it is
the best way to avoid most of the major me-
chanical problems that can affect your car
during its life time.
For those of us who don’t have the manual
for our cars for one reason or another, here
are 10 tips to help you along.
You drive your car everyday. Do you pay at-
tention to it? Do you feel that slight shimmy
in the front end? Is there a new knocking
sound under the hood? Is there a rattle in the
dashboard?
No one knows your car better than you do.
If you feel something different or if it isn’t
handling like it used to, take it to your me-
chanic. It could be something as simple an
álignment issue, or perhaps a slack drive

belt. It’s always best to find any small prob-
lem before it becomes a big one.
2. Keep an eye on where you park your car;
get yourself into the habit of looking to see
if there are any leaks when you move off.
This could be harder if you use public
garage with lots of stains from leaks from
other cars, but if your car is leaking any type
of fluid transmission, radiator or brake the
leak will look “fresh” If you see, any type of
fluid have the car serviced as soon as possi-
ble. (Don’t wait) it will get much worse I
promise you.)
3. Always check your tires before you get
into your car. Inspect your tires for any wear
and make sure your tyres are properly in-
flated. Bald, slick tires might be excellent
for motor racing but they’re no good for the
road.
Most tires come with tread wear bars or in-
dicators built into them now, if your tread is
too low you will notice a small line going
diagonally across your tire tread. Replace
your tires. Four new tires might seem ex-
pensive but they’re cheaper than a fine or an
accident
Check your tire pressure once every month.

your mileage, give you handling and com-

Every 5,000 miles or 8,000km, have your
tires rotated. Clean brake dust off regularly,

leave it too long, the combination of road
grime, moisture and heat from your brakes
will bake it on to your wheels. Brake dust

electricity so a sponge and clean soapy water
is the best way to get it off.
4. Change your oil at least every 5000km or
every 3months which ever comes first. Oil is
the life blood of your car and keeping fresh
oil in your car can extends it’s life by many,
many kilometers

place if necessary your air filter, hoses and
belts.
5. Keep your windshield washer reservoir
full and carry an extra with you. You don’t
want to be caught with a dry washer reser-
voir and you don’t realize how quickly you
can use it up.
6. Have your cooling system checked and
flushed once a year. This will help ensure op-
timal engine health and lessen the chance of
overheating or a breakdown on a hot day.
Nothing is worse on a hot or extremely cold
lonely night to be stranded because you did-
n’t have your coolant system checked.
7. When you check your oil level it is always

a good idea to check your transmission fluid.
It is just as easy. You pull out the transmis-
sion dip stick and wipe it on a white paper
towel is it red in color or burned smelling and
brown or black? Red is the natural color of
most transmission fluids. Brown and burned
smelling fluid could be a sign that in the least
you need to change your transmission fluid
and filter or that you have a serious trans-
mission issue that may require immediate at-
tention.
8. Take a few minutes to check the safety
items of your car. Do all of the seat belts
work properly?
If you know how, check your brake pads, if
you don’t take your car to have them
checked. A brake pad replacement isn’t all
that expensive and will give you a better
peace of mind.
9. Don’t forget to wash and wax your car at
least once a month. This will ensure that your
car looks its best and maintains its new shiny
look for as long as possible. It may even help
keep the moist away for a longer period.
Proper polishing and waxing can even make
a dull car look new again and save you the
expense and inconvenience of having it re-
painted.
10. Have your car under washed and engine
washed every three months.
This will help to keep the hoses from drying
out, becoming brittle and cracking for a
longer period.
