Bad Mood - The Vaccines

Theories Sven Carlsson Televised Bard/ Commercial Exhibitionist because the there is a narrative and yet it is still very stylized. Also there is only a very small amount of time taken up by shots of the band performing. Michael Shore Recycled style, Information overload, anesthetization of violence thorough chic. Genre The song itself is Indie Rock, or Post-Punk Revival, and the music video vaguely follows the same path, through the use of all that I shall be discussing. Meanings Created The theme of the video is very obvious and ties into the name and lyrics of the song very easily. The theme is that Justin (the singer) is in a bad mood, and that bad mood is exacerbated by the way the other band members are all in good moods. Editing/ FX The editing is fairly standard, with faster cuts when the song gets faster and slower ones when the song is not in need of fast edits. The editing does allow us to see a wide variety of shots, which aids in keeping the audience interested in the video. The video FX allow the audience to get a deeper understanding of what the video is telling us, e.g. in the screen grab no.2 below there is a red screen flare to signify anger. Camera/ Screenplay

1. This is a medium shot of Justin siting down in a depressed pose.

2. Here is a medium shot of Justin, singing to the camera, while there is a red lens flare that signifies anger, this comes after the lyric, But I get angrier with age. 3. This is a medium shot of Justin standing to the side as the others stand arm in arm in excitement before entering the theme park. After this there are multiple shots of the band members in the theme park, in all Justin is moody. 4. Here we see Justin preparing to do the Hammer hitting game; this connotes his angry mood, as hammers are generally a symbol of aggression. 5. Here we see Justin fighting a Panda, a panda generally connotes comfort and happiness, so this once again shows his bad mood. 6. This is a close up of Justin singing to the camera, while all around him the other band members are getting drunk, and doing karaoke. Analysis I think that the camera and screenplay are the most important things in helping our understanding of the genre of the video. It also does a great job of keeping the audience interested, as there is some humor involved in the screenplay, in the form of the over exaggeration in the acting. Audio We hear only non-diegetic music in this video bar the beginning where we hear some bird tweets to show that it is the morning. This could have been done to take as little away from the video as possible, in other words, to make the video about the song. Mise-en-scene The sets in this are all things that connote happiness, which is juxtaposed with the acting of Justin, creating the strong feeling that Justin is in a Bad Mood, so in that sense the Mise-en-Scene has a big influence on the feelings the video creates.
