THE KUNG FU SCHOOL

NEWSLETTER VOL 2, ISSUE 3 TH

SUNDAY 29 SEPTEMBER 2013

A WORD FROM SI GUNG :

Welcome to our grading, this is an opportunity for our students to show what they have been learning over the last three or four months. Those who have been training regularly will be asked by their instructor to apply for grading this is a formal examination and is to be treated as such. The examiners have flown in from around the country especially for this occasion. The examiners are looking for top performance and understanding to be displayed at all times. The changing of the belt or sash is indicative of length of time training and dedication. Initially this sash would be white and because in ancient times they trained outside it would get progressively dirtier until it was almost black. That is where the black-belt comes from. We welcome guests to our Kwoon (training hall) but we ask everyone to respect our rules and etiquette.

CHO SI DINNER
What is Cho Si dinner?
Cho Si dinner is a celebration of the life of our ancestor Seh Koh San, born on the 27 December 1886 whose hometown was in the Hailou Village, Lingtou Town, Huian County, Fujian Provence. One must remember that if it wasnt for Cho Si our ancestor, we would not be doing Gao Can Mun Nam Pai Chuan, as he was instrumental in spreading the art out of China to his students and one of his students was Si Jo Quek Heng Choon who after learning the art, took it to Malaysia and introduced our style there. One of master Queks students happened to be Tai Si Gung Lai Khee Choong who revolutionised Gao Can Mun Nam Pai Chuan when he took it to London and gave it the structure that we adhere to right up to this very day. One of Master Lais students was and still is Si Gung OSullivan who learnt the art under him. After many years, Si Gung OSullivan brought our martial Art to New Zealand and taught it to his own students here in Palmerston North. From Si Gung OSullivan the art has spread to the Asia Pacific Region. If you want to know what Cho Si dinner is all about, its more than just celebrating our Monks Birthday for we are also celebrating the passing down of the art from Master to Student through the years. We should remember that each one of the mentioned Masters has given a lifetime of commitment to the art and to their students, so we are celebrating our Past, Present and our Future. The North St School kids appeared to have a great time and especially loved it when the seniors flying kicked over their teachers.

CLUB NEWS Wellington

The Wellington clubs, in Brooklyn and Johnsonville, have been continuing their hard work this term: training, teaching and attracting new students. We have a diverse range of students now from all walks of life. On Saturday the 14th of September some of our students performed at a community event in Brooklyn, the suburb we have trained in for a number of years. There was also a table set up with some weapons displayed, information about the style and fliers to hand out to people. We got a lot of kids to have a go at punching and kicking focus mitts and try to learn a basic combination, with great enthusiasm generally too! Our performance showed numerous parts of training and the crowd really enjoyed it.

What is it like doing Nam Pai Chaun as a young woman?

What is it like doing Nam Pai Chaun as a young woman? There are a number of words I can think of; empowering, enlightening, exhausting, educational Choosing to learn Nam Pai Chuan may be one of the best decisions I ever made. I think I initially decided to come for the reason most people do, I needed regular exercise and being a uni student I needed something that would take my mind off study for at least a few hours a week. Another reason for me, which I think is why a number of women decide to do martial arts, was the desire to be able to defend myself. I work at a bar and, as most people know, bars are full of drunkards just waiting to pick a fight. In the past few months Id been at the butt end of some close calls and realized I had no idea what to do except curl into a ball and flinch. So, I entered class on Fergusson St. the first night hoping that Nam Pai Chuan would fulfill all these needs. I have to say that it has done all that and more. I have only been going to class for five months and I can already notice a significant change in my fitness levels. Its also great as a hobby for uni. Its easy to stop thinking about that youre concentrating on doing pushups or learning a new form And, while I know Im nowhere near being able to take down some drunk rugby player just yet, I feel a lot more confident about my ability to at least move out of the way efficiently and avoid getting hurt. Nam Pai Chuan seems to have satisfied my initial requirements that I wanted when I joined but it has given me more than that. I have gained a sense of community, not just with my local school,

but with schools all over New Zealand and around the world. Ive also met a lot of great new people. It encourages me to push my limits and has made me realize that youve always got some energy left. In the school everyone is an equal, youre never expected to be unable to do something because youre a girl. In fact, the girls are the toughest ones in there! As a woman it has given me a great sense of empowerment and achievement as well as confidence in my abilities. Nam Pai Chaun may be one of the best things Ive ever done to make myself a strong and independent young woman. -Rebecca, Jiu Lian Shan
