Nicanor Parra brought poetry down to earth. In Parras poems, which he himself calls antipoems, we find mundane objects, everyday expressions, and characters who speak without really knowing what they are saying. His verses, stripped of ornament, in good and bad humor, with nerve and elegance, have a way of making you think of nothing less than the meaning of life.

In the early decades of the 20th century the avant-garde poet Vicente Huidobro, father of Creationism, changed the face of poetry in the Spanish language. This selection of his poems, teeming with unusual images and visual games, draws us into a world that is often quite different from our own, with roosters singing atop the Eiffel Tower and 'endangered ships between two stars.'

Simplicity and mystery are perhaps the two words that best describe the poems of Gabriela Mistral. This anthology offers a selection of Mistrals bestloved poems as well as others that remind us of the powerful emotions that inspired her work, as the Swedish Academy aptly noted on the occasion of granting her Nobel Prize in Literature. When Gabriela Mistral wrote her version of the Sleeping Beauty tale, she found her inspiration in Charles Perraults celebrated Tales and Stories of the Past, written in 1928. Mistral conceived her text in the form of a verse fairy tale which exhibits the beauty and grace that were so prized by the Modernists. Amanuta now gives new life to this poem by publishing it as a picture book with illustrations by Carmen Cardemil.

In the torrential poetry of Pablo Neruda, which comprises an oeuvre of over 40 books, we find many sublime poems that may be read as independent works. This is the case of Alturas de Macchu Picchu, the second section of Canto general (1950), in which the poet sings a tribute to the extraordinary mountains that form the backdrop to the famed Incan city.

Fascinated by childrens literature, Gabriela Mistral wrote her own Cinderella tale in 1926, based on the story written by Charles Perrault in the 17th century. Editorial Amanuta now brings it back to life as a picture book illustrated by Bernardita Ojeta, who adds a contemporary dimension to this classic tale. Mistrals version of this story is a true literary delight.

Bernardita Ojeda | La Cenicienta

Jorge Teillier, perhaps the most nostalgic of Chilean poets, wrote verses that were light, never strident, that recalled summers dusty lanes and the wooden houses of Chiles southern latitudes. Wine and friendship are recurring themes in his work, as are those unexpected conversations that take place as the afternoon turns to night.
